A total of 204 rhizobacterial isolates from 39 maize rhizospheric soil samples were screened for antagonism against Fusarium verticillioides. Fifty-six isolates (27%) inhibited fungal growth in dual culture assays, with 27 cultures showing strong inhibition (>35%). The bacterial isolates were further evaluated for biocontrol related attributes, including ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, chitinase, β-1,4-glucanase, protease, amylase, and lipase production, along with plant growth-promoting traits such as phosphate, zinc, and iron solubilization and the production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gib

Panax ginseng, a high-value medicinal plant, faces substantial yield losses due to black spot disease, while conventional chemical controls cause pesticide residues and soil ecological damage, necessitating green biocontrol strategies. Here, two antagonistic strains, Bacillus sp. WY17 and WY26, were isolated from the surface-sterilized internal root tissues of 10-year-old ginseng. Through systematic optimization of carbon/nitrogen sources, inorganic salts, and fermentation parameters (temperature, pH, agitation, inoculum size, and duration), the optimal culture conditions were established. BACKGROUND: Radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) is characterised by incidental MRI findings suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) in individuals without typical MS symptoms. People with RIS (pwRIS) may have subtle manifestations, including cognitive impairment. We aimed to examine whether plasma chitinase 3-like 1 (pCHI3L1) levels in pwRIS are associated with cognitive impairment and grey matter volumes in regions known to be vulnerable in MS.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 45 individuals with pwRIS and 21 healthy controls. Cognitive performance was assessed with the M

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease marked by intestinal epithelial damage. Although pyroptosis is implicated in the pathogenesis of UC, the key regulators of this process remain unclear. Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) is upregulated in multiple inflammatory conditions and has been proposed as a fecal biomarker for endoscopic activity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study investigates the role of CHI3L1 in regulating macrophage pyroptosis in UC.
METHODS: We analyzed CHI3L1 expression in UC patient colon tissues using GEO datasets and immu

In the context of global aging, mild behavioral impairment (MBI) is present in 48.9% of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MBI, a neurobehavioral syndrome in the elderly, is an independent risk factor for cognitive decline and is closely related to peripheral blood biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease, offering new diagnostic and interventional avenues for early MCI. To summarize evidence on peripheral blood biomarkers related to MBI and their underlying mechanisms involving neuroinflammation, tau pathology, and oxidative stress, a systematic review of studies published b

Fusarium verticillioides (F. verticillioides) is a prevalent soilborne fungal pathogen that seriously threatens the production of maize (Zea mays). Species within the Chaetomium genus are recognized as potential biocontrol agents for managing plant pathogens. However, the biocontrol efficacy and underlying inhibitory mechanisms of Chaetomium species against maize seedling blight caused by F. verticillioides have yet to be comprehensively evaluated and fully elucidated. This study demonstrates that Chaetomium globosum (C. globosum) G3 reduced the disease index of F. verticillioides on maize see

Actinobacteria have been drawing attention due to their potential for the development of new pest control products. We hereby assess the effects of Streptomyces isolated from marine and caatinga biomes against Duponchelia fovealis Zeller (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a pest associated with the strawberry culture at a global scale. To this end, eggs deposited by adults were immersed for 5 s in a bacterial suspension, and the larvae were fed on leaflets placed in glass tubes containing bacterial suspensions. In both treatments, the control was a saline solution. The bioassays demonstrated that the S

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are important proteins used in many life science applications, from diagnostics to therapeutics. High demand for mAbs for different applications urges the development of rapid and reliable recombinant production platforms. Plants provide a quick and inexpensive system for producing recombinant mAbs. Moreover, when paired with an established platform for mAb discovery, plants can easily be tailored to produce mAbs of different isotypes against the same target. Here, we demonstrate that a hybridoma-generated mouse mAb against chitinase 1 (CTS1), an antigen from Cocci

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal hydroxylase alpha-l-iduronidase (IDUA). The resulting accumulation of dermatan and heparan sulfate induces intellectual disabilities and pre-mature death, and only a few treatment options are available. In a previous study, we demonstrated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of gene therapy by injecting recombinant adeno-associated viral vector serotype (AAV)2/5-IDUA into the brain of a canine model of MPS I. We report on a quantitative proteomic analysis of control dogs and untreated dogs with MPS I cerebrospina

The genus Aphanomyces (Oomycetes) comprises approximately 50 known species of water molds in three lineages. One of the most notorious is Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of crayfish plague. In this study, fresh isolates of Aphanomyces were collected from 20 live specimens of the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852) from Lake Tahoe, California, providing 35 axenic cultures of A. astaci as well as two apparently undescribed Aphanomyces spp. isolates. Based on the results of ITS-, chitinase-, mitochondrial rnnS- and rnnL-sequences and microsatellite markers combined, the

Although programmed death (PD)-1 immune checkpoint therapies target the immune system, the relationship between inflammatory factors and the clinical outcome of anti-PD-1 therapy for nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not fully understood. Here we examined the association between soluble immune mediators and the outcome of treatment with PD-1 inhibitors in patients with advanced/recurrent NSCLC. In two independent cohorts, we assessed the levels of 88 different soluble immune mediators in peripheral blood before and after anti-PD-1 treatment, and evaluated their associations with clinical ou

Pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a group of diverse molecules that are induced by phytopathogens as well as defense related signaling molecules. They are the key components of plant innate immune system especially systemic acquired resistance (SAR), and are widely used as diagnostic molecular markers of defense signaling pathways. Although, PR proteins and peptides have been isolated much before but their biological function remains largely enigmatic despite the availability of new scientific tools. The earlier studies have demonstrated that PR genes pro
