Purpose: To assess the correlation between the choriocapillaris (CC) on optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography and the inner choroid (IC) on structural OCT.Methods: In this prospective, cross-sectional, observational, pilot study, consecutive healthy subjects were imaged with a 6x6mm macular scan using OCTA PlexElite. Angiographic images of the CC were isolated using 10 μm-thick slab starting 21 μm posterior to the automatically segmented retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) band centerline. The structural en face OCT images of the IC were isolated using five 10 μm-thick slabs starting 11 …

Pathological choroidal angiogenesis, a salient feature of age-related macular degeneration, leads to vision impairment and blindness. Endothelial cell (EC) proliferation assays using human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) or isolated primary retinal ECs are widely used in vitro models to study retinal angiogenesis. However, isolating pure murine retinal endothelial cells is technically challenging and retinal ECs may have different proliferation responses than choroidal endothelial cells and different cell/cell interactions. A highly reproducible ex vivo choroidal sprouting ass…

Choroid plexus papilloma is an uncommon tumour of the central nervous system, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial neoplasm. The usual locations are the lateral ventricle in infants and children and the fourth ventricle in adults. The third ventricle is a rare location, with few cases reported in the literature. We describe the case of a 3-month-old boy who was admitted to our centre with signs of raised intracranial pressure. Neuroimaging studies showed a third ventricular mass with associated hydrocephalus. The patient underwent complete tumour removal through a transfrontal appro…

BACKGROUND: Histological grading of choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) remains the best prognostic tool to distinguish between aggressive choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and the more benign choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) or atypical choroid plexus papilloma (aCPP); however, these distinctions can be challenging. Standard treatment of CPC is very aggressive and often leads to severe damage to the young child's brain. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish between CPC and less aggressive entities (CPP or aCPP) to avoid unnecessary exposure of the young patient to neurotoxic therapy. To better stratify…

Recent studies have provided evidence that cortical brain ischemia may influence choroid plexus function, and such communication may be mediated by either traditional CSF circulation pathways and/or a possible glymphatic pathway. Here we investigated the hypothesis that improvements in arterial health following neoangiogenesis alter (i) intracranial CSF volume and (ii) choroid plexus perfusion in humans. CSF and tissue volume measurements were obtained from T1-weighted MRI, and cortical and choroid plexus perfusion were obtained from perfusion-weighted arterial spin labeling MRI, in patients w…

The central nervous system manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remain poorly understood. Given the well-defined role of autoantibodies in other lupus manifestations, extensive work has gone into the identification of neuropathic autoantibodies. However, attempts to translate these findings to patients with SLE have yielded mixed results. We used the MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr mouse, a well-established, spontaneous model of SLE, to establish the immune effectors responsible for brain disease. Transcriptomic analysis of the MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr choroid plexus revealed an expression signat…

BACKGROUND: It is very rare for a choroid plexus tumor to occur intraparenchymally in the absence of a relation to the choroid plexus.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A case of cerebral intraparenchymal choroid plexus tumor in a 30-year-old woman presenting with left hemiparesis is described. Brain magnetic resonance imaging depicted a large cystic mass in the right frontal lobe. Tumor resection was performed by right frontal craniotomy. No connection with the choroid plexus was observed during the operation. Histologically, the tumor exhibited a glandular structure with a papillary pattern suggesting…

OBJECTIVE: Choroidal metastases (CMs) are the most common intraocular tumor. Management is mainly radiation therapy with goals of pain control and visual improvement. However, many radiation-related complications are reported. Since gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) for CM was first reported in 1995, few cases have been reported. We report 7 cases of CMs treated with GKS.
METHODS: From April 2011 to November 2014, 7 patients with CM underwent GKS. Their median age at treatment was 64 years (range, 51-71 years). Four males and three females were treated. Lung cancer was the most common primary pa…

A case is presented of a patient with dysphonia, hearing loss and ataxia due to vestibulocochlear and vagal nerve compression by choroid plexus papilloma in the cerebellopontine angle. Choroid plexus papillomas are rare tumors usually arising in the lateral and fourth ventricle, and rarely found in the cerebellopontine angle, making the neuroimaging characteristics usually not sufficient for diagnosis. Patients usually present with headache and hydrocephalus but tumors in the cerebellopontine angle can cause vestibulocochlear dysfunction and cerebellar symptoms. Dysphonia along with hearing lo…

UNLABELLED: OBJECT.: Severe hydrocephalus and hydranencephaly are common congenital conditions in Kenya. In patients with these conditions, ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts are associated with appreciable complications and endoscopic third ventriculostomies (ETVs) have limited success. Endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation (CPC) to diminish CSF production is a potential treatment option. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of CPC without ETV in infants with severe hydrocephalus or hydranencephaly.
METHODS: Medical records of infants with severe congenital hydrocephalus or hyd…

Choroid plexus, a fetal organ developing approximately from the sixth week of gestation, plays a fundamental role in developing fetal brain organization. As relatively little is known about the relationship between anomalies of choroid plexuses structure and their role in brain function, we examined cases of bifid choroid plexus (BCP) and discussed their potential association with lateral ventriculomegaly, other abnormal ultrasound findings, and their potential role as markers of fetal chromosomal abnormalities. In the present study, we described 23 cases of fetal BCP found in 2145 routine sec…

The authors report a case of choroid plexus papilloma in a girl with hypomelanosis of Ito, and they review the literature in brief. Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by cutaneous hypopigmented whorls, streaks, and patches along lines of Blaschko. Most patients exhibit CNS manifestations, including psychomotor retardation, seizures, hypotonia, and ataxia. A 6-year-old girl with hypomelanosis of Ito was referred to the authors' hospital with bilateral tumors in the lateral ventricles. The right lateral ventricle tumor was surgically removed. Immunohistochemical…

We report a case of a 20-month-old girl with a large choroid plexus carcinoma arising in the left lateral ventricle and an adrenocortical tumor. Following brain tumor resection, the patient was treated with radiation and chemotherapy. The adrenocortical tumor was found with the manifestation of precocious puberty. TP53 gene mutation (exons 4-10) was not detected in either specimen. The patient had leptomeningeal dissemination and died 26 months later.

Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a malignant tumor with a strong tendency to spread along the cerebrospinal fluid pathway. There is no standardized chemotherapy protocol for this rare tumor. We report a 38-year-old man with CPC in the lateral ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Because of the poor demarcation between thalamus and fornix, subtotal tumor resection was performed. Postoperative spine magnetic resonance (MR) image revealed whole spinal axis dissemination. After diagnosis of CPC, the patient was treated with whole ventricular and spine radiation concomitant with temozolomide …

The vascular tumors of the retina and choroid comprise a diverse group of congenital and acquired lesions. The major vascular tumors of the retina include retinal capillary hemangioma, cavernous hemangioma of the retina, retinal vasoproliferative tumor, and racemose hemangiomatosis of the retina or Wyburn-Mason syndrome. Choroidal vascular tumors include circumscribed choroidal hemangioma and diffuse choroidal hemangioma. While classified as benign, visual symptoms secondary to exudative retinal detachment and a variety of other mechanisms are common and are a major source of long-term visual …
