Carapa guianensis oil attenuates erosive dentin wear and modulates matrix metalloproteinase expression in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a natural lipid extracted from Carapa guianensis (andiroba) in controlling erosive wear and modulating matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression in dentin. DESIGN: Bovine dentin specimens (4 × 4 × 2 mm) were prepared and subjected to an initial erosive challenge using 1% citric acid for 10 min to induce artificial lesions. Specimens were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 12): G1 (negative control) - water-based gel without active compounds; G2 - Carapa guianensis oil; and G3 (positive control) - a commercially avail

Aqueous extract of Cornus officinalis alleviate NAFLD via protecting hepatocytes proliferation through regulation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cornus officinalis (CO) has been widely used as Chinese herbal medicine and has a good clinical efficacy in liver disease. In particular, it has a significant therapeutic effect on metabolic liver disease. However, systematic pharmacological studies on its hepatoprotective effect on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are lacking. AIM OF THE STUDY: We investigated the impact of Cornus officinalis extract (COE) on two mouse models of NAFLD, screened the potential mechanisms of action by using metabolomics assays, and explored the protective effects on hepa

Emerging roles of the metabolite succinate in bone-related diseases.

Bone-related diseases, including osteoporosis (OP), osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), fracture, and periodontitis, significantly impact human health. Succinate, primarily known as a metabolic intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, has emerged as a regulator of cellular functions beyond its metabolic role. Under stress, succinate accumulates in mitochondria and acts as a signaling molecule, modulating cellular processes. Notably, succinate activates angiogenesis and inflammation by stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). Moreover, it influences various patho

Nerve-dependent recovery of metabolic pathways in regenerating soleus muscles.

The metabolic recovery potential of muscle was studied in regenerating soleus muscles of young adult rats. Degeneration was induced by subfascial injection of a myotoxic snake venom. After regeneration for selected periods up to 2 weeks, samples of whole muscle were analysed for hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1), phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11), lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.11.27), adenylokinase (EC 2.7.4.3), creatine kinase (EC 2.7.3.2), malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.11.37), citrate synthase (EC 4.1.3.7) and beta-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.35). Lactate dehydrogenase, adenylokinase, malat

Biochemical alterations in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin encephalopathy: a review.

This review article discusses some current questions concerning the measurement of bilirubin in the blood of newborn infants and the relationship of these blood parameters to the biochemical defects responsible for bilirubin encephalopathy. A discussion of numerous theories, which have been put forth to explain the specific biochemical mechanism by which bilirubin acts on brain metabolism, demonstrates that presently there is no unequivocal explanation for the molecular events leading to bilirubin encephalopathy.

Metabolomics studies in common multifactorial eye disorders: a review of biomarker discovery for age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and myopia.

INTRODUCTION: Multifactorial Eye disorders are a significant public health concern and have a huge impact on quality of life. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these eye disorders were not completely understood since functional and low-throughput biological tests were used. By identifying biomarkers linked to eye disorders, metabolomics enables early identification, tracking of the course of the disease, and personalized treatment. METHODS: The electronic databases of PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched for research related to Age-Related macular degeneration

Spatial metabolomics revealed mTOR-mediated gastric epithelial repair by licorice (G. inflata) flavonoids.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza inflata Bat.) is a traditional food homologous herbal medicine in China. Licorice flavonoid (LF), a bioactive food component extracted from licorice, has demonstrated therapeutic potential against alcohol-induced gastric ulcers (GU) by promoting mucosal regeneration and suppressing apoptosis. Excessive alcohol consumption is prevalent, and gastrointestinal disorders are generally higher in drinking populations. High concentrations of alcohol result in damage to gastric mucosa, and epithelial restoration is a highly ATP-dependent process that requires a high energy supply

HBV and host metabolic crosstalk: Reprogramming pathways for viral replication and pathogenesis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) establishes chronic infection through strategic manipulation of host metabolic networks, driving a spectrum of hepatic pathologies ranging from hepatitis to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Mechanistically, HBV reprograms core metabolic pathways, including glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid homeostasis, to fuel its replication machinery and evade immune surveillance. This review systematically synthesizes current evidence on HBV-induced glucose/lipid metabolic rewiring, with particular emphasis on how viral-host cross

Trans-Cinnamaldehyde Inhibition of Pyruvate Dehydrogenase: Effects on Streptococcus mutans Carbohydrate Metabolism.

Dental caries is a chronic oral infectious disease, and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) plays an important role in the formation of dental caries. Trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA) exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity; however, its target and mechanism of action of CA on S. mutans needs to be further explored. In this study, it was verified that CA could inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans. Further proteomic analysis identified 33, 55, and 78 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in S. mutans treated with CA for 1, 2, and 4 h, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis showe

Metabolomics analysis of cervical cancer, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and chronic cervicitis by 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Metabolomics profiles of serum samples from women with chronic cervicitis, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and cervical cancer were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). These spectral profiles were subjected to partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and good discriminations between cancerand non-cancer groups (chronic cervicitis and CIN) were achieved by multivariate modeling of serum profiles. The main metabolites contributing to these discriminations, as highlighted by multivariate analysis and confirmed by spectral integration, were formate,

Treatment with tianeptine induces antidepressive-like effects and alters the neurotrophin levels, mitochondrial respiratory chain and cycle Krebs enzymes in the brain of maternally deprived adult rats.

Maternally deprived rats were treated with tianeptine (15 mg/kg) once a day for 14 days during their adult phase. Their behavior was then assessed using the forced swimming and open field tests. The BDNF, NGF and energy metabolism were assessed in the rat brain. Deprived rats increased the immobility time, but tianeptine reversed this effect and increased the swimming time; the BDNF levels were decreased in the amygdala of the deprived rats treated with saline and the BDNF levels were decreased in the nucleus accumbens within all groups; the NGF was found to have decreased in the hippocampus,
