BACKGROUND: In intensive care unit (ICU) patients, diminished consciousness, device dependency, and limited privacy leave dignity preservation largely dependent on nurses' behavior, which may be shaped by both individual professional values and the unit's ethical climate.
AIM: To examine the predictive roles of professional values and perceived ethical climate on dignity-protecting behaviors among ICU nurses and to test whether perceived ethical climate moderates the professional values-dignity-protecting behavior relationship.
METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included 165 nu

Climate change threatens agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods, particularly among smallholder farmers in East Africa. In Ethiopia, rural women play critical roles in natural resource management; however, structural social, economic, and institutional barriers limit their adaptive capacity and reinforce gender inequalities. Despite growing attention to climate change adaptation strategies (CCAS), empirical evidence on its role in promoting gender empowerment remains limited. Therefore, this research aims at generating location-specific data on the contribution of CCAS to gender empow

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adherence to physical therapy (PT) and secondary prevention programs (SPPs) is particularly low for individuals with Parkinson's disease. Preliminary research has linked perceptions of caring climates as well as enhanced tripartite efficacy perceptions to adherence during rehabilitation programs. In light of such preliminary research, the purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to examine relationships between perceptions of a caring climate and the 3 efficacy constructs within the tripartite model, (2) to examine the relationship between the tripartite efficacy constr

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic vector-borne disease causing abortion storms in cattle and human epidemics in Africa. Our aim was to evaluate RVF persistence in a seasonal and isolated population and to apply it to Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean), where the virus was still silently circulating four years after its last known introduction in 2007. We proposed a stochastic model to estimate RVF persistence over several years and under four seasonal patterns of vector abundance. Firstly, the model predicted a wide range of virus spread patterns, from obligate persistence in a constant or trop

In recent decades, the Arctic has experienced rapid atmospheric warming and sea ice loss, with an ice-free Arctic projected by the end of this century. Cyclones are synoptic weather events that transport heat and moisture into the Arctic, and have complex impacts on sea ice, and the local and global climate. However, the effect of a changing climate on Arctic cyclone behavior remains poorly understood. This study uses high resolution (4 km), regional modeling techniques and downscaled global climate reconstructions and projections to examine how recent and future climatic changes alter cyclone

Rapidly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) levels is essential to meeting the Paris Agreement's temperature targets. Previous assessments of CO2 removal (CDR) have primarily focused on the hysteresis and invertibility of climate change itself, overlooking quantitative analysis of potential economic impacts of climate change via CDR. In this study, we first develop a powerful neural network model, EconClimNet, trained on decades of economic data from 1,554 sub-national regions worldwide and 111 climate indices derived from the fifth-generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5). Compared to popular

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the deadliest transmissible diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. The control of malaria is hindered by socio-economic and environmental factors and its growth is also associated with climate change, particularly temperature increases combined with precipitations and humidity.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyse the trends of malaria in the last two decades and assess the influences of climate change on the transmission of malaria in Africa.
METHODS: Malaria incidence and evolution trends were used to evaluate the current burden of malaria in Africa. The Pearson co

Short-duration rainfall extremes can cause flash flooding with associated impacts. Previous studies of climate impacts on extreme precipitation have focused mainly on daily rain totals. Subdaily extremes are often generated in small areas that can be missed by gauge networks or satellites and are not resolved by climate models. Here, we show a robust positive trend of at least 20% per decade in subhourly extreme rainfall near Sydney, Australia, over 20 years, despite no evidence of trends at hourly or daily scales. This trend is seen consistently in storms tracked using multiple independent gr…

A longitudinal study of 80 participants in cognitive and interpersonal group therapy for social phobia was conducted. The aim was to investigate the relationship between group climate and patients' short-term and long-term outcome. Group climate data was collected every other week during treatment, whereas social phobia symptoms were assessed at admission, discharge, and one year follow-up. Abbreviated symptom assessments were performed weekly. Regression analyses and mixed models were used in the analyses. Engagement predicted symptom reduction during treatment, from pretreatment to follow-up

Saturn's moon Titan exhibits a rich interplay of atmospheric chemistry and meteorology, including the seasonal formation of polar stratospheric clouds, first observed by Voyager and later by the Cassini mission. Using a global climate model with haze and cloud microphysics, we investigate their origin, evolution, and fate. We find that cloud formation begins in early autumn, triggered by rapid radiative cooling and chemical enrichment within the stratospheric polar vortex. Initially extending to 336 km altitude and composed of benzene and hydrogen cyanide ices, these clouds descend to lower al

Climate change impacts on malaria are typically assessed with scenarios for the long-term future. Here we focus instead on the recent past (1970-2003) to address whether warmer temperatures have already increased the incidence of malaria in a highland region of East Africa. Our analyses rely on a new coupled mosquito-human model of malaria, which we use to compare projected disease levels with and without the observed temperature trend. Predicted malaria cases exhibit a highly nonlinear response to warming, with a significant increase from the 1970s to the 1990s, although typical epidemic size

The influence of climate and the role of water security on economic growth are topics of growing interest. Few studies have investigated the potential role that climate hazards, which water security addresses, and their cumulative effects have on the growth prospects for a country. Owing to the relatively stationary spatial patterns of global climate, certain regions and countries are more prone to climate hazards and climate variability than others. For example, El Nino/Southern Oscillation patterns result in greater hydroclimatic variability in much of the tropics than that experienced at hi

Greenhouse gases emitted by humans have exacerbated global climate change. Forests can effectively sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and afforestation has been widely adopted worldwide to mitigate climate change. Cunninghamia lanceolata and Pinus massoniana, as major afforestation tree species, are extensively cultivated in southern China. However, the mechanisms by which climate, topography, biodiversity, forest structure, and forest growth status affect the productivity of these two species remain unclear. This study used forest inventory data from Lishui City comb

Climate has critical roles in the origin, pathogenesis and transmission of infectious zoonotic diseases. However, large-scale epidemiologic trend and specific response pattern of zoonotic diseases under future climate scenarios are poorly understood. Here, we projected the distribution shifts of transmission risks of main zoonotic diseases under climate change in China. First, we shaped the global habitat distribution of main host animals for three representative zoonotic diseases (2, 6, and 12 hosts for dengue, hemorrhagic fever, and plague, respectively) with 253,049 occurrence records using

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Malawi, particularly among children under five years of age, with substantial geographic variation in transmission. Although malaria chemoprevention is effective, evidence on how malaria burden, climatic conditions, population exposure, and spatial dependence can inform its geographic prioritisation in Malawi remains limited. This study aimed to develop composite measures of malaria burden, climatic suitability, and population exposure, assess climatic influences and spatial dependence on malaria transmission and identif

BACKGROUND: Climate change has been shown to have long-term effects on mental health, yet, to date, there have been few studies on how children and adolescents experience and respond to ecological changes and how and why they engage in climate action. We explored empirically young people's views about climate change and how distinct cultural contexts influence individual climate action.
METHODS: We invited children and adolescents (ages 7 to 18) and their caregivers from the general population in the United States and France to participate in semi-structured focus groups. We recruited 74 part
