Does cognitive functioning predict chronic pain? Results from a prospective surgical cohort.

It is well established that chronic pain impairs cognition, particularly memory, attention and mental flexibility. Overlaps have been found … -Making Test A and B, and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure copy and immediate recall, which assess cognitive flexibility, visuospatial processing and visual memory. Anxiety, depression and coping strategies were also evaluated. In total, we investigated 189 patients before surgery: 96% were re-evaluated at 6 months, and 88% at 12 months. The effect of psychological flexibility level and pregnancy stress on traumatic birth perception and breastfeeding success in primiparous pregnant women in the latent phase.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and childbirth are significant life events that can affect women's mental health and maternal functioning. Psychological flexibility, defined as the ability to adapt to changing situations and maintain balance under stress, plays a crucial role in this process. This study aimed to examine the effects of psychological flexibility and pregnancy stress on the perception of traumatic birth and breastfeeding success among primiparous pregnant women in the latent phase. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January 2021 and June 2022 at a training and res

A Mechanistic Understanding of the Different Factors Affecting Adaptation and Flexibility During Probabilistic Reversal Learning: A Neurocomputational Study on Patients with Parkinson's Disease and Control Subjects.

PURPOSE: Reinforcement learning with reversal is a paradigm frequently employed in neuropsychology to assess the adaptive capacity and flexibility in individuals in non-stationary environments. Each single behavior, however, depends on the superimposition of multiple factors, which are still not completely understood. METHODS: We optimize a neurocomputational model of the Basal Ganglia to simulate the behavior of 18 patients with Parkinson's disease (both ON and OFF medication) and 14 control subjects during a two-choice probabilistic reversal learning task (with 80-20% reward probabilities).

Psychological inflexibility and depressive symptoms as key correlates of suicidal risk among university students in a U.S.-Mexico border city.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal risk among university students remains a pressing public health concern, particularly in high-stress border contexts. While depressive symptoms are well-established correlates of suicidal risk, the adjusted association of psychological inflexibility and the potential roles of resilience and perceived social support remain underexplored among university students in structurally stressed regions. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether psychological inflexibility was independently associated with suicidal risk beyond depressive symptoms and assessed whether resilience and pe

Neurophysiological mechanisms of fluid intelligence: Insights from ERP and aperiodic activity in adolescents.

To investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms of fluid intelligence (Gf), this study systematically examined neural activity differences between adolescents with high and low Gf using three core executive function (EF) tasks: inhibitory control (Flanker), working memory (4-back), and cognitive flexibility (task-switching), with a focus on event-related potentials (ERPs) and aperiodic activity. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during both resting and task states, and the FOOOF algorithm was used to perform parametric spectral decomposition. The results revealed that the low-Gf group…

Rigidity in error monitoring: Altered oscillatory dynamics under speed and accuracy instructions in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The ability to detect errors and adjust one's own behavior accordingly is fundamental to successful adaptations in dynamic environments. Errors elicit a negative frontocentral deflection in the event-related potential, i.e., error-related negativity (ERN). Moreover, they lead to an oscillatory burst in theta and delta ranges. Theta has been proposed to reflect a mechanism communicating the need for cognitive control across prefrontal brain regions. Error processing and theta and delta power have been repeatedly shown to be increased in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addi

Cognitive inflexibility, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and traits and poor post-pandemic adjustment.

The ability to flexibly adapt thoughts and behaviours represents a fundamental attribute for behavioural success. Impairments in aspects of cognitive flexibility are found as transdiagnostic latent phenotypes of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and are present within a range of mental disorders and within the population at large. In this narrative review, we focus on the attentional set-shifting aspect of cognitive inflexibility, which has been largely investigated in the context of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders and is thought to underpin perseverative symptomatology. We appraise …

eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with coronary heart disease: chain mediation of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibility and a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality worldwide, and its management requires patients to make complex, preference-sensitive treatment decisions. Decisional conflict is common in this population and adversely affects treatment adherence and outcomes, yet its association with eHealth literacy and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with CHD, tested the chain-mediating roles of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibi

Hyperactivity, compulsive-like behaviours, and impaired flexibility in mouse models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

X-linked Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), caused by mutations in a gene coding several dystrophin isoforms from independent promoters, is associated with a range of brain-related comorbidities. Intellectual disability is variably expressed depending on the position of the genetic variants, intelligence quotients being negatively correlated with the number of deficient brain dystrophins. However, the genetic basis of other phenotypes underlying cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as executive dysfunctions and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is still unclea

Spatiotemporal profiling of functional network overlapping modules in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive neural network degradation. In brain functional networks, overlapping module structures provide more accurate representations of brain function than nonoverlapping structures. Since the involvement of overlapping nodes in multiple modules can vary over time, investigating dynamic functional changes in the brain may provide deeper insights into the structural characteristics of these overlapping modules. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of overlapping modular brain organization remain unclear. We employed resting-state fMRI to explore

The Dice Trails Test: A modified Trail Making Test for children and adults with Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Psychometrically sound instruments to assess cognitive flexibility in people with Down Syndrome (DS) are lacking. The Trail Making Test (TMT) is well-established but requires reading letters and numerals, limiting its applicability for people with DS. AIMS: To evaluate the psychometric properties and developmental sensitivity of a newly developed TMT adaptation without letters and numerals - the Dice Trails Test (DTT). METHODS: The DTT was administered to 39 children (8-14 years, 46 % female) and 57 adults (18-57 years, 47 % female) with DS. We evaluated feasibility (proportion o…

Executive functions in Chinese kindergarten children with early reading problems.

Learning to read Chinese is a complex task that draws on a range of executive function (EF) skills since early development. However, no studies have examined EF as a potential contributing factor to early reading problems among Chinese children. The present longitudinal study identified 48 poor readers and 48 normal readers among a sample of 190 Chinese children at the end of kindergarten. Measures of EF skills (working memory, inhibition control, and cognitive flexibility) and reading outcomes (word reading, sentence reading fluency, and sentence reading comprehension) were administered to th…

In many cognitive tasks, lapses (spontaneous errors) are tacitly dismissed as the result of nuisance processes like sensorimotor noise, fati … ined by local failures to learn. Furthermore, chronic exposure to cocaine, which is known to impair cognitive flexibility, did increase perseverative errors, but, surprisingly, also improved overall set-shifting task performance by reducing lapse rates. We reconcile these results with a state-switching model in which cocaine decreases exploration by deepening attractor …

Changes in catastrophizing and depressed mood during and after early cognitive behaviorally oriented interventions for pain.

Catastrophizing and depressed mood are risk factors for poor outcome in treatments for pain and appear to act as mediators for favorable outcome. However, little is known about how catastrophizing and depressed mood co-occur within individuals and how these patterns change during treatment, which is the focus of the current study. The study uses data from a randomized controlled trial about early cognitive behaviorally oriented interventions for patients with nonspecific spinal pain (N = 84). Cluster analyses were used to extract subgroups of individuals with similar scoring patterns on catast
