Design and Rationale of the FICAPP Study: Frailty in Cardiac Amyloidosis: Profiling the Phenotype.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Cardiac amyloidosis is an infiltrative cardiomyopathy associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Frailty, a biologic syndrome of decreased physiologic reserve, may be common and clinically significant in this population, yet remains insufficiently characterised. We aim to determine the prevalence and characteristics of frailty among adults with cardiac amyloidosis, and examine its association with functional status, quality of life, and disease severity. METHODS & DESIGN: As a prospective, observational, single-centre cohort study, adults with confirmed cardiac amy

The clinical value of nonpharmacological interventions for preventing postoperative delirium: a narrative review.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a prevalent perioperative complication among elderly individuals and is a cause of significant detrimental c … e divided into cognitive training and noncognitive interventions. The former is aimed at increasing cognitive reserve, thus decreasing the incidence rate of POD. Noncognitive interventions, including sensory stimuli (music therapy, odor enrichment), improving sleep disturbances, physical activity, acupuncture and transcranial magnetic/direct current stimulation, ar …

Health literacy after traumatic brain injury: characterisation and control comparison.

Background Little is known about health literacy in traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors. The aims of this study were to compare health li … ls with TBI was not significantly different to controls. Premorbid education may provide a critical cognitive reserve upon which TBI survivors can draw to aid their health literacy. These findings are specific to the Health LiTT-SF measure only and require replication using more comprehensive health literacy measures in culturally diverse samples.

Could Mental and Physical Exercise Alleviate Alzheimer's Disease?

The aim of this review is to emphasize the importance of mental activity and aerobic physical exercise as one of the most important health-r … ction of the cortical brain volume which occurs during aging. Mental activity increases a person's "cognitive reserve" and promotes the formation of new communications between brain cells. Since it is not possible to influence genetic components of Alzheimer's dementia, preventative interventions such as encou¬raging regular engagement in mental and physical activi …

Effect of education on functional network edge efficiency in Alzheimer's disease.

We investigated the effect of education on the edge efficiency in resting state functional networks (RSFNs) in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). We collected the data of 57 early aMCI, 141 late aMCI, 173 mild ADD, and 39 moderate-to-severe ADD patients. We used years of education as a proxy for cognitive reserve. We measured edge efficiency for each edge in RSFNs, and performed simple slope analyses to discover their associations with education level among the four groups. In the late aMCI, a sub-network that had hub nodes in the right middle fro…

Higher Education Is Associated with a Lower Risk of Dementia after a Stroke or TIA. The Rotterdam Study.

BACKGROUND: Higher education is associated with a lower risk of dementia, possibly because of a higher tolerance to subclinical neurodegener … wer risk of dementia after stroke or TIA, particularly in men, which might be explained by a higher cognitive reserve.

Microcytic anemia in older adults: a comprehensive review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Microcytic anemia (MA) is common in older adults (OA) with a significant impact on quality of life and survival. We explore current knowledge on the subject. RECENT FINDINGS: Nonspecific general signs (delirium, cognitive disorders, apathy, bradyphrenia, falls, …) may be at the forefront of MA in OA.Recent advances have clarified the roles of hepcidin, ferroportin and soluble transferrin receptors. Nevertheless, the assay of these new biomarkers is only recommended in cases of uncertainty. The most common mechanism of MA in OA is iron deficiency. It is often both absolute (d

Cognitive tasks show age-related decline over a 10-year period in a natural aging monkey model, cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus).

Cotton-top tamarins (n = 14, aged 7-24 years) were tested over a 10-year period on tasks conventionally differentiating aging from dementia in humans. Three tasks were developed on iPads to collect response accuracies in tests of attention (visual search [VS]), working memory (delayed matching-to-sample), and executive processing (rule-shifting). A fourth task utilized a spontaneous object recognition paradigm to test familiarity memory in the subjects' home cages. Linear regression analyses revealed cognitive decline with increasing age in particular components of these tasks. Specifically, a

An examination of semantic performance in mild cognitive impairment progressors and nonprogressors.

OBJECTIVE: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), and about half of older people with MCI will progress to AD within the next 5 years. The aim of the present study was to compare the semantic performance of MCI progressors (MCI-p) and nonprogressors (MCI-np). The hypothesis was that MCI-p would present with poorer semantic performance relative to MCI-np at baseline, indicating that semantic deficits may increase the risk of future decline toward AD. METHOD: Fifty-six MCI participants (aged 65-89) from the Consortium for Early Identification o

Pick a PACC: Comparing domain-specific and general cognitive composites in Alzheimer disease research.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to illustrate how complex cognitive data can be used to create domain-specific and general cognitive composites relevant to Alzheimer disease research. METHOD: Using equipercentile equating, we combined data from the Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center that spanned multiple iterations of the Uniform Data Set. Exploratory factor analyses revealed four domain-specific composites representing episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, and attention/processing speed. The previously defined preclinical Alzheimer disease cognitive composite (PAC

Consequences of exposure to the thin ideal in mass media depend on moderators in young women: An experimental study.

This study examined the consequences of media exposure to thin ideals compared to pictures of landscapes in healthy young women and women with eating and mixed mental disorders and investigated whether appearance-related cognitive factors and cognitive distortions moderate the effects. Two hundred seventy-five women in a multisite laboratory trial (174 in- or outpatients and 101 healthy women; Mage 22.87 years, SD = 3.94) were exposed to either thin ideals or to landscape pictures and guided through a vivid imagery of these pictures thereafter. Changes in body image dissatisfaction, mood, eati

CBT for adolescent pathological gambling - lessons from adult research.

OBJECTIVES: Features of gambling, particularly among young people have changed over the past decade and, while there are no data from Ireland, there are suggestions from those working in the field that pathological gambling is increasing among adolescents. Relatively little is known about the effective treatment of pathological gambling in adolescents. This paper aims to review research in cognitive behavioural treatments with a view to their application in adolescents. Research among adolescence is given prominence when this is available. METHODS: The methodology comprised a literature searc

[Geriatric assessments and their practical application in uro-oncology : How do we decide on prostate cancer treatment in an age-appropriate way?].

The management of geriatric patients with urological cancers is becoming increasingly important due to rising life expectancy and the growing incidence of such diseases. However, treatment decisions are often based primarily on chronological age or clinical guidelines, whilst insufficient consideration is given to the functional reserve of older patients. Geriatric patients exhibit specific physiological changes such as impaired renal or liver function, sarcopenia, multimorbidity, polypharmacy, malnutrition and cognitive impairments, which increase the risk of postoperative complications, func

Men and women show partly distinct effects of physical activity on brain integrity.

INTRODUCTION: Physical inactivity and female sex are independently associated with increased Alzheimer's disease (AD) lifetime risk. This study investigates the possible interactions between sex and physical activity on neuroimaging biomarkers. METHODS: In 134 cognitively unimpaired older adults (≥65 years, 82 women) from the Age-Well randomized controlled trial (baseline data), we investigated the association between physical activity and multimodal neuroimaging (gray matter volume, glucose metabolism, perfusion, and amyloid burden), and how sex modulates these associations. RESULTS: The an

Maternal iron nutriture as a critical modulator of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder risk in alcohol-exposed pregnancies.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy places the fetus at risk for permanent physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments, collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). However, prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) outcomes vary widely, and growing evidence suggests that maternal nutrition is a modifying factor. Certain nutrients, such as iron, may modulate FASD outcomes. Untreated gestational iron deficiency (ID) causes persistent neurodevelopmental deficits in the offspring that affect many of the same domains damaged by PAE. Although chronic alcohol consumption enhances iron upta

A systematic examination of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, global emotion dysregulation, and cognitive insight in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among trauma exposed patients with early nonaffective psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that emotion dysregulation after trauma is associated with increased posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity. However, it remains unclear how different dimensions of emotion dysregulation and cognitive insight may interact to predict Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) PTSD symptoms in early psychosis. The present study systematically examines cognitive emotion regulation strategies, global emotion dysregulation, and cognitive insight in relation to DSM-5 PTSD symptoms among trauma-exposed patients with early

Clinically significant cognitive dysfunction in OEF/OIF/OND veterans: Prevalence and clinical associations.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive performance in trauma-exposed populations, such as combat Veterans, has been shown to be worse than in nonexposed peers. However, cognitive performance has typically been within the normal range (within 1 SD of normative mean), and the prevalence of clinically significant cognitive dysfunction (i.e., performance more than 1 SD below the mean on multiple measures in a domain) in younger adults with trauma exposure remains unknown. The objective of our study was to measure this. METHOD: We applied Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) cutoff
