Atypical oral viral coinfection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: Diagnosis and treatment challenge.

BACKGROUND: Viral reactivation in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a serious complication associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Infections caused by human herpes viruses such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can result in oral lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male patient who had undergone HSCT presented with ulcerated lesions in different areas of the mouth, for 7 months. The lesions had evolved to painful exophytic nodules with an erythematous, ulcer

Computational analysis of human host binding partners of chikungunya and dengue viruses during coinfection.

Mosquito-borne viral diseases like chikungunya and dengue infections can cause severe illness and have become major public health concerns. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and dengue virus (DENV) infections share similar primary clinical manifestations and are transmitted by the same vector. Thus, the probability of their coinfection gets increased with more severe clinical complications in the patients. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the common human interacting partners of CHIKV and DENV proteins during coinfection. The viral-host protein-protein interactome was constructed using Cy…

Parasitic nematodes simultaneously suppress and benefit from coccidian coinfection in their natural mouse host.

Within-host interactions among coinfecting parasites are common and have important consequences for host health and disease dynamics. Howeve … (nematode: Heligmosomoides polygyrus, coccidia: Eimeria hungaryensis) to investigate the impact of coinfection on parasite infection dynamics, and to determine if the host immune response mediates this interaction. Coinfection led to delayed worm expulsion and prolonged egg shedding in H. polygyrus infections and lower peak E. hungaryensis oocyst burdens. By …

Double-Edged Role of Interleukin 17A in Streptococcus pneumoniae Pathogenesis During Influenza Virus Coinfection.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the role of host interleukin 17A (IL-17A) response against colonizing Streptococcus pneumoniae, and its transition to a pathogen during coinfection with an influenza virus, influenza A H1N1 A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (PR8). METHOD: Wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice were intranasally inoculated with S. pneumoniae serotype 6A to establish colonization and later infected with the influenza strain, PR8, resulting in invasive S. pneumoniae disease. The role of the IL-17A response in colonization and coinfection was investigated in WT, RoRγt-/- and RAG1-/- mice with antibody-…

Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus coinfection in brain after dental extraction: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: More than 1200 different types of microbes were found in the human mouth, only some of these microorganisms were associated with intracranial bacterial infection. However, there are limited data available about the Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus (P alactolyticus) or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) intracranial infections oral origin. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we reported a rarely case with P alactolyticus and MTB coinfection in central nervous after dental extraction. The 44-year-old man presented with progressive headache over the last 2 weeks and a sustained fever >39°C, with a…

Bacterial coinfection restrains antiviral CD8 T-cell response via LPS-induced inhibitory NK cells.

Infection of specific pathogen-free mice with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a widely used model to study antiviral T-cell immunity. Infections in the real world, however, are often accompanied by coinfections with unrelated pathogens. Here we show that in mice, systemic coinfection with E. coli suppresses the LCMV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response and virus elimination in a NK cell- and TLR2/4-dependent manner. Soluble TLR4 ligand LPS also induces NK cell-mediated negative CTL regulation during LCMV infection. NK cells in LPS-treated mice suppress clonal expansion o…

Coinfection with Enteric Pathogens in East African Children with Acute Gastroenteritis-Associations and Interpretations.

Enteric coinfections among children in low-income countries are very common, but it is not well known if specific pathogen combinations are associated or have clinical importance. In this analysis, feces samples from children in Rwanda and Zanzibar less than 5 years of age, with (N = 994) or without (N = 324) acute diarrhea, were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction targeting a wide range of pathogens. Associations were investigated by comparing co-detection and mono-detection frequencies for all pairwise pathogen combinations. More than one pathogen was detected in 840 samples (65%…

HCV coinfection contributes to HIV pathogenesis by increasing immune exhaustion in CD8 T-cells.

BACKGROUND: There are several contributors to HIV-pathogenesis or insufficient control of the infection. However, whether HIV/HCV-coinfected population exhibits worst evolution of HIV-pathogenesis remains unclear. Recently, some markers of immune exhaustion have been proposed as preferentially upregulated on T-cells during HIV-infection. Herein, we have analyzed T-cell exhaustion together with several other contributors to HIV-pathogenesis that could be affected by HCV-coinfection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-six patients with chronic HIV-infection (60 HIV-monoinfected and 36 HIV/HCV-coinfec…

The cost-effectiveness of treating triple coinfection with HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis C virus.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of treating patients infected with HIV and simultaneously coinfected with tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). METHODS: A mathematical model for HIV coinfection with TB and HCV is introduced. The model was designed to incorporate parameters of control for the coverage of care, which makes it useful for performing cost-effectiveness analysis of public policies. A cost-effectiveness analysis of early medical care of patients with TB and HCV coinfection, with coverage of 0 (basal), 25, 50, 75 and 100%, was p…

Impact of Plasmodium falciparum Coinfection on Longitudinal Epstein-Barr Virus Kinetics in Kenyan Children.

Endemic Burkitt lymphoma is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Plasmodium falciparum coinfection, although how P. falciparum exposure affects the dynamics of EBV infection is unclear. We have used a modeling approach to study EBV infection kinetics in a longitudinal cohort of children living in regions of high and low malaria transmission in Kenya. Residence in an area of high malaria transmission was associated with a higher rate of EBV expansion during primary EBV infection in infants and during subsequent episodes of EBV DNA detection, as well as with longer episodes of EBV DNA de…

Evaluating Liver Fibrosis by Transient Elastometry in Patients With HIV-HCV Coinfection and Monoinfection.

BACKGROUND: Due to the high efficacy of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), the number of patients living with HIV is increasing. Chronic HCV infection has become a leading cause of non-AIDS related morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV infection. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify factors associated with liver fibrosis (LF) in patients with HIV monoinfection and HIV-HCV coinfection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed LF by transient elastometry ([TE], Fibroscan) in three groups of patients (HIV, HIV-HCV and HCV) followed at the Infectious Diseases…
