People and sites as community resources for preventing and managing chronic health conditions: A conceptual analysis.

The prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) require community-based efforts-especially as their burden grows, and recognition of the need for engaging diverse stakeholders in care grows. The aim of this conceptual analysis was to categorise existing community resources (people and sites) used to support such efforts, the mechanisms by which they work, and the conditions that constrain their effectiveness. We developed an initial framework for categorising community resources. We then used a sample of the literature- 24 studies from 12 countries-to refine and enric

Community-based approach for prevention and control of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.

An action research design was conducted in two villages of Mueang District, Kanchanaburi Province to assess the effectiveness of a community-based approach program. Knowledge, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, and regular larval survey behavior were measured for program outputs. Container Index (CI), House Index (HI), and Breteau Index (BI) were used to confirm program outcomes. Key community stakeholders in the experimental village were identified and empowered through active learning in the village. Monthly meetings with the key stakeholders were used to share experiences learned, to

Improving access to psychosocial interventions for perinatal depression in low- and middle-income countries: lessons from the field.

Over 90% women with perinatal depression in low and middle-income countries do not receive treatment. Scale-up of evidence-based psychosocial interventions is a key challenge. We developed the Thinking Healthy Programme (THP), a psychosocial intervention that can be delivered by non-specialist providers such as community health workers in primary and secondary care settings. Our research showed that three out of 4 women with perinatal depression who received the programme recovered, and there were beneficial effects on infant outcomes. In over a decade since the original research, policy and p…

Human rights and health disparities for migrant workers in the UAE.

Systematic violations of migrant workers' human rights and striking health disparities among these populations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the norm in member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Migrant laborers comprise about 90 percent of the UAE workforce and include approximately 500,000 construction workers and 450,000 domestic workers. Like many other GCC members countries, the UAE witnessed an unprecedented construction boom during the early 2000s, attracting large numbers of Western expatriates and increasing demand for cheap migrant labor. Understanding Knowledge and Barriers Related to Hepatitis B for Vietnamese Nail Salon Workers in the City of Philadelphia and Some of Its Environs.

In the United States (U.S.), up to 2.2 million individuals have been chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Many nail salon workers are at risk for HBV as they are coming from high-risk and traditionally underserved communities. To understand barriers and knowledge associated with HBV in the Vietnamese nail salon community, the Health Belief Model (HBM) was used to qualitatively assess the health needs for the prevention of HBV among Vietnamese nail salon workers in Philadelphia through focus groups and interviews (N = 19). Results revealed several themes that highlight barriers wi

Facilitators and barriers of Community Case management of Malaria implementation in Homabay, Busia and Kakamega Counties, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Community Case management of malaria (CCMm) is a strategy used in malaria-endemic areas to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality. CCMm involves providing malaria diagnosis and treatment within the community by trained community health volunteers (CHVs). While evidence suggests CCMm is effective in combating the disease burden at the community level, it isn't without challenges. This study assesses facilitators of and barriers to uptake of CCMm. METHODS: This cross-sectional study employed a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data was collected using a household questionnaire ta
