Malarial paroxysms due to Plasmodium vivax were studied for alterations in whole serum complement (C') and certain C' components. The objective was to relate C' values with events of the parasite cycle during schizogony and with the febrile pattern. A single dose of inactivated mumps virus vaccine was administered to male patients with IgA glomerulonephritis (IgA-GN), IgM glomerulonephritis (IgM-GN) and to healthy males. Antibodies to mumps virus were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The role of beta 2 microglobulin (beta 2-m) in Systemic Sclerosis (SS) has been evaluated. Twenty-four female patients have been examined: 15 of them were affected by acrosclerosis (Group 1) and 9 of them by diffuse sclerosis (Group 2). 46.6% of Group 1 and 44.4% of Group 2 had values significantly higher than normal controls. Mixed polyclonal cryoglobulinaemia was evidenced in a 49-year-old woman admitted to our hospital because of Proteus mirabilis sepsis associated with polyarthralgia and purpuric manifestations on the lower limbs. Cryoglobulins and circulating immune complexes decreased during the second week of illness and disappeared after recovery. We measured white blood cell counts and complement component (C3a, C4a, and C5a) and prostacyclin levels, and studied lung biopsy specimens, in 16 patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass and compared them with four patients undergoing other pulmonary procedures.
