Neonatal conjunctivitis due to uncommon pathogen Streptococcus mitis/oralis: a case report.

Neonatal conjunctivitis (NC), historically attributed to Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is now known to be caused by various pathogens, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Although viridans group streptococci are generally regarded as commensal organisms, they may cause opportunistic conjunctival infections. Here, we present a case of NC caused by Streptococcus mitis/oralis, a member of the Mitis group of viridans group streptococci. A 15-day-old female neonate presented with bilateral severe eyelid edema and moderate hemopurulent discharge that precluded anterior segme

Identification and antibiotic susceptibility of coagulase negative staphylococci isolated in corneal/external infections.

AIMS: To identify and determine antibiotic susceptibility of coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from patients with chronic blepharitis, purulent conjunctivitis, and suppurative keratitis. METHODS: A retrospective review of all culture positive cases of chronic blepharitis, purulent conjunctivitis, and suppurative keratitis between July 1995 and December 1996 was performed. Cases in which CoNS were the sole isolates were analysed. Species identification was performed by using a commercially available standardised biochemical test system. Antibiotic susceptibility to penicillin, g

Tracking Vibrio cholerae Cell-Cell Interactions during Infection Reveals Bacterial Population Dynamics within Intestinal Microenvironments.

Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of the diarrheal disease cholera. Although many V. cholerae virulence factors have been studied, the role of interbacterial interactions within the host gut and their influence on colonization are poorly understood. Here, we utilized the conjugative properties of a Vibrio-specific plasmid to serve as a quantifiable genetic marker for direct contact among V. cholerae cells in the infant rabbit model for cholera. In conjunction, we also quantified contact-dependent type 6 secretion system (T6SS)-mediated killing of co-infecting V. cholerae strains. Tracking

Is There a Role for Bronchoscopy in Aspiration Pneumonia?

Aspiration represents the passage of oropharyngeal content to the lower respiratory tract. The interplay between the host and the aspirate proprieties determines the subsequent aspiration syndrome. A low pH, typical of gastric aspirate, favors chemical pneumonitis, whereas an increased bacterial inoculum causes aspiration pneumonia. About a quarter of patients with aspiration pneumonitis will develop a bacterial superinfection during the course of recovery. While antibiotic therapy is indicated for aspiration pneumonia, supportive care remains the cornerstone of treatment in aspiration pneumon

Development and validation of a high-throughput anti-Wolbachia whole-cell screen: a route to macrofilaricidal drugs against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis.

There is an urgent need to develop new, safe, and affordable macrofilaricidal drugs for onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis treatment and control. The Anti-Wolbachia Consortium (A·WOL) aims to provide a novel treatment with macrofilaricidal activity by targeting the essential bacterial symbiont Wolbachia. The consortium is currently screening a diverse range of compounds to find new chemical space to drive this drug discovery initiative and address this unmet demand. To increase the throughput and capacity of the A·WOL cell-based screen, we have developed a 384-well format assay using a hi

Analysis of IMP-1 type metallo-β-lactamase-producing Acinetobacter radioresistens isolated from companion animals.

IMP-1 type metallo-β-lactamase-producing (MBL-producing) Acinetobacter radioresistens was isolated from a dog with cystitis and a cat with conjunctivitis. The MBL-producing A. radioresistens isolates were resistant to all of the β-lactam antibiotics used in the sensitivity tests, but were susceptible to gentamicin, amikacin, and minocycline. Also, one of the two strains of A. radioresistens was susceptible to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. These two cases were cured by administration of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, which elicited a positive result in the sensitivity tests. This report

Acute conjunctivitis caused by Ewingella americana.

The first case of Ewingella americana conjunctivitis in an otherwise healthy child is reported. Cultures of the conjunctival purulent exudate taken from both eyes grew E. americana. The infection resolved completely after successful treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanate. E. americana should be considered a rare but potential pathogen causing conjunctivitis.

Meningococcal conjunctivitis in neonates.

Three neonates were admitted with purulent conjunctivitis, and an initial diagnosis of gonococcal ophthalmia was made because gram-negative diplococci were seen on gram stains of conjunctival exudates. Meningococci were grown from eye exudates of all three infants and from the blood of one. Since Neisseria species other than gonococci can sometimes cause neonatal ophthalmia, an etiologic diagnosis should not be made until microbiologic identification is complete. Before the results of definitive bacteriologic studies are known, care should be taken in discussing the cause of the infection with

Quantifying the association between Campylobacter infection and Guillain-Barré syndrome: a systematic review.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a neurologic disease that causes ascending paralysis and is triggered by a preceding bacterial or viral infection. Several studies have shown that patients with GBS have a recent history of infection due to Campylobacter jejuni. A literature review of published studies that reported rates of Campylobacter infection before or in conjunction with GBS was done. These reported data were used for calculating the proportion of GBS cases who tested positive for Campylobacter compared to the control population and the incidence of GBS among patients infected with Campy

Cholera toxin B induced activation of murine macrophages exposed to a fixed bacterial immunogen.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that intranasal administration of inactivated (fixed) Francisella tularensis (iFt) live vaccine strain (LVS) in conjunction with the mucosal adjuvant, cholera toxin B (CTB), provides full protection against subsequent lethal challenge with Ft LVS and partial protection against the more virulent Ft SchuS4 strain. Understanding the mechanisms of CTB-induced immune stimulation that confer protection against Ft will be valuable to the development of an effective vaccine against this highly virulent fatal pathogen. In this study, an in vitro system was

Differential Susceptibility of Mixed Polymicrobial Biofilms Involving Ocular Coccoid Bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis) and a Filamentous Fungus (Fusarium solani) on Ex Vivo Human Corneas.

Biofilms confer several advantages to the organisms associated with them, such as increased resistances to antibacterial and antifungal compounds compared to free living cells. Compared to monomicrobial biofilms involving a single microorganism, biofilms composed of microorganisms affiliated to bacterial and fungal kingdoms are predominant in nature. Despite the predominance of polymicrobial biofilms, and more so mixed polymicrobial biofilms, they are rarely studied. The objective of the current study is to evaluate the potential of ocular bacteria and a filamentous fungus to form monomicrobia
