Complications associated with intrauterine glass marbles in five mares.

CASE DESCRIPTION 5 mares were evaluated because of reproductive complications following long-term (> 1 year) use of intrauterine glass marbles for estrus suppression. CLINICAL FINDINGS 3 mares had 1 intrauterine glass marble, and 2 mares had 2 intrauterine glass marbles. On examination, 2 mares had signs of chronic endometritis, and 3 had signs of pyometra. Marbles or glass shards adhered to the endometrium were identified by means of hysteroscopy in 3 of 5 mares. Five of 7 marbles had surface imperfections or were broken. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME All patients were treated with uterine lavage and

[Anaphylactic manifestations during protected sexual intercourse disclosing allergy to latex].

Reports of allergy to latex have been increasingly frequent during the last few years. The culprit is the natural Hevea Brasiliensis latex which is present in numerous latex-containing materials for daily use. Clinical manifestations are usually benign. Systemic manifestations have been reported mainly in general anaesthesia. We report a case of severe anaphylactic manifestations that occurred during a condom-protected sexual intercourse. The responsibility of latex for this accident was demonstrated by skin and biological tests.

Minimally Invasive Approach to Intrauterine Device Migration Into the Bladder Using Holmium Laser.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely utilized method of contraception known for its high efficacy, safety profile, and long-term effectiveness. Despite its favorable characteristics, rare but potentially serious complications may occur, such as uterine perforation and device migration into adjacent pelvic or abdominal structures. One of the less frequent but clinically relevant complications is intravesical migration, where the device perforates the uterine wall and erodes into the urinary bladder. This can result in chronic lower urinary tract symptoms, recurrent urinary tract infections

Acceptability of an existing, female-controlled contraceptive method that could potentially protect against HIV: a comparison of diaphragm users and other method users.

OBJECTIVE: The diaphragm, an internal barrier contraceptive device, is a candidate for a female-controlled method for preventing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study's objective was to examine how women who use the diaphragm differ from women using the pill and/or condoms with respect to factors hypothesized to influence the acceptability of contraceptive methods. Our goal was to increase understanding of who finds the diaphragm acceptable and why. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey with selected female members o

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device: a wider role than contraception.

The Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG IUD) provides excellent contraception; it may reduce the rate of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and ectopic pregnancy compared to other 'modern' copper releasing IUDs; it can safely be used in the puerperium for breast-feeding mothers, and it significantly reduces menstrual blood loss and pain. While it was developed primarily as a contraceptive, its potential role in managing heavy and painful menstruation and the symptoms of the climacteric may eventually be just as important. Amongst developed countries New Zealand and Australia have

Changes in the Use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive Methods Among U.S. Nulliparous Women: Results from the 2006-2010, 2011-2013, and 2013-2015 National Survey of Family Growth.

OBJECTIVE: Nulliparous women in the United States have high rates of unintended pregnancy comparable with parous women. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are recommended as first-line contraceptive choices to reduce unintended pregnancy. However, use of LARCs among nulliparous women has been low. This study aims to examine changes in the prevalence of current LARC use among sexually experienced U.S. nulliparous women across the time period of 2006-2010, 2011-2013, and 2013-2015, and examine correlates of use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sexually experienced nulliparous women (15-44 yea

Race, ethnicity and differences in contraception among low-income women: methods received by Family PACT Clients, California, 2001-2007.

CONTEXT: The extent to which racial and ethnic differences in method choice are associated with financial barriers is unclear. Understanding these associations may provide insight into how to address racial and ethnic disparities in unintended pregnancy. METHODS: Claims data from the California Family PACT program, which provides free family planning services to low-income residents, were used to determine the proportions of women receiving each type of contraceptive method in 2001-2007. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify associations between women's race and ethni

Theory-based interventions for contraception.

BACKGROUND: The explicit use of theory in research helps expand the knowledge base. Theories and models have been used extensively in HIV-prevention research and in interventions for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The health behavior field uses many theories or models of change. However, educational interventions addressing contraception often have no stated theoretical base. OBJECTIVES: Review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that tested a theoretical approach to inform contraceptive choice; encourage contraceptive use; or promote adherence to, or continuation of, a co

Emergency contraception: update and review.

Emergency contraception (EC) is the postcoital method of pregnancy prevention. Three methods of EC are used in the United States: (1) levonorgestrel-only pills, Plan B (Barr Pharmaceuticals, LLC, New Jersey) (2) combined estrogen and progestin pills, and (3) the copper intrauterine device. Used within 120 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse, EC reduces the risk of pregnancy by 60 to 94%. EC is a critical component of medical care for sexual assault survivors, and several states have laws mandating this standard of care. Levonorgestrel-only EC is available to women >or=17 years of age wi

Therapy insight: guidelines for selection of contraception in women with rheumatic diseases.

Use of contraceptives by women with rheumatic diseases, especially those with systemic lupus erythematosus, has long been thought to carry risks, such as disease exacerbation, thrombosis and other adverse effects. The use of effective contraception has, therefore, been avoided, despite many affected women being of reproductive age. Knowledge of risks and benefits of contraceptive methods in the general population has improved, as have the safety and effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Methods of administration have evolved and now include transdermal and intravaginal routes, a progestero

A longitudinal study of contraception and pregnancy outcome in a representative sample of young Swedish women.

The prevalence of contraception and pregnancy history in the same women, aged 19 and 24 years, was assessed in a longitudinal cohort study by means of a postal questionnaire. A one-in-four random sample of all the women born 1962, resident in the city of Göteborg in 1981, was obtained from the population register (n = 656). The response rate was 91%. Respondents from 1981 were re-assessed in 1986 (response rate: 83%). The respondents from 1986 (n = 488) represent 74% of the original sample from 1981. Contraceptive usage in the same women aged 19 and 24 years (in brackets) was as follows: Oral

Provision of immediate postpartum intrauterine contraception after vaginal birth within a public maternity setting: Health services research evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Expanding access to postpartum intrauterine contraception (PPIUC) can reduce unintended pregnancies and short inter-pregnancy intervals; however, provision across Europe is limited. Our aim was to determine the feasibility, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction of providing immediate PPIUC after vaginal birth using a health services research model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Phased introduction of PPIUC across two Lothian maternity hospitals; all women intending vaginal birth during the study period without a contraindication to use of the method were eligible to receive PPIUC.

Outpatient insertions of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system in women with pulmonary hypertension: A case series.

Pulmonary hypertension is rare but carries high morbidity in women of reproductive age. Effective contraception is essential, with long-acting reversible contraceptives preferred. However, intrauterine device insertion is often restricted to surgical settings, limiting access. This case series reports outpatient Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System insertions in this high-risk population.
