Continuity and change in drug treatment: Regimes of control in Japan.

BACKGROUND: This article examines the development of illegal drug control in Japan. Focusing on the area of drug treatment, a theoretical explanation is offered for how and why a previously punitive configuration has shifted towards a more complex one including both inclusionary and exclusionary approaches. In doing so, it argues for theoretical engagement with the relations of power which structure political competition in the governance of illegal drug control. METHODS: Using conceptual tools adopted from urban regime analysis, the article discusses the dispositions, resources, and schemes

Contemporary psychotherapy research: implications for substance misuse treatment and research.

This article provides an overview of the major findings of psychotherapy research and discusses the possible implications of these findings for substance user treatment researchers and practitioners. While the centrality of relationship for human change processes was historically understood, twentieth century research tended to see relationship and person variables as secondary to operationalized "mechanisms of action" unique to particular psychotherapies. Interestingly, recent meta-analytic investigations have uncovered the weakness of randomized controlled trials (RCT) comparison investigati

The blackening process of black-odor water: Substance types determination and crucial roles analysis.

Black-odor water is a serious environmental issue in many developing counties. Iron sulfides and chromophoric dissolved organic matter are considered possible blackening substances. However, the specific type of blackening iron sulfides and the contributions of blackening substances are unclear. This study performed a laboratory simulation experiment to identify the blackening iron sulfides and quantify the contribution of blackening substances. The environmental conditions for forming blackening substances and their blackening process were also determined. We demonstrated that the black iron

Biofilm in implant infections: its production and regulation.

A significant proportion of medical implants become the focus of a device-related infection, difficult to eradicate because bacteria that cause these infections live in well-developed biofilms. Biofilm is a microbial derived sessile community characterized by cells that are irreversibly attached to a substratum or interface to each other, embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances that they have produced. Bacterial adherence and biofilm production proceed in two steps: first, an attachment to a surface and, second, a cell-to-cell adhesion, with pluristratification of bacteria o

Pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, and Early Immune-Modulator Therapy.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is caused by infectious insults, such as pneumonia from various pathogens or related to other noninfectious events. Clinical and histopathologic characteristics are similar across severely affected patients, suggesting that a common mode of immune reaction may be involved in the immunopathogenesis of ARDS. There may be etiologic substances that have an affinity for respiratory cells and induce lung cell injury in cases of ARDS. These substances originate not only from pathogens, but also from injured host cells. At the molecular level, these substance

Cue-induced inhibitory control in forensic patients with alcohol use disorder: A link to criminal recidivism risk assessed by factor 2 psychopathy.

Cue-reactivity and impaired inhibitory control represent well-established mechanisms contributing to substance use relapse, which, in turn, increases the risk of criminal reoffending in forensic populations whose offending behavior is closely linked to substance use. In Germany, such individuals may be mandated to custodial addiction treatment under Section 64 of the Criminal Code (§ 64 StGB). To date, it remains largely unexplored whether inhibitory control deficits under substance-cue exposure relate more directly to indicators of criminal recidivism risk in forensic addiction populations. Hong Kong children's posited "vulnerability" to social influence on substance abuse.

A survey of 2,051 pupils between Grade 4 and Grade 7 in 2003 showed that social influence or encouragement to substance use was a significant determinant of substance use risk, controlling for prior substance use and other backgrounds. Contextual stress or unhappiness among parents, classmates, and other people around operated jointly with social influence to promote substance use risk. This finding accords with a dovetail model about the extra influence due to the joining of force and receptivity to the force. Further research is necessary to corroborate the present findings obtained from a p

Stigma towards Marijuana Users and Heroin Users.

Despite high levels of stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors toward individuals with substance use problems, there is surprisingly limited research on understanding the contributors to such high levels. College students with no history of marijuana or heroin use (N=250) completed self-report measures to examine the level of substance use stigma towards individuals using two illicit substances (marijuana and heroin) and the contribution of three perceiver characteristics (sex, previous contact with substance users, and five beliefs about substance use) to three dimensions of stigma (social dista

Psychoactive substance use among American anesthesiologists: a 30-year retrospective study.

The purpose of this study was to assess the cumulative incidence of substance use among anesthesiologists during training and practice, the effect of stress on drug use, and deterrent efficacy of institutional prevention programmes. The 260 anesthesiologists who had trained at the Medical College of Wisconsin between 1958-1988 were surveyed by mail regarding psychoactive substance use. Analysis of 183 responses focused on demographic and psychosocial factors. Substances used most frequently included: alcohol (91.6%), marijuana (30.8%) and cocaine (9.4%). Twenty-nine (15.8%) anesthesiologists w

Eating disorders in female inpatients with versus without substance use disorders.

This study assessed the relationship between substance use disorders and eating disorders in female psychiatric inpatients. Structured diagnostic interviews were reliably administered to a series of inpatients with substance use disorders (n = 67) and a comparison sample without substance use disorders (n = 69). Eating disorder diagnoses as a whole, including eating disorder not otherwise specified, were distributed significantly more frequently among subjects with substance use disorders than among psychiatric controls. Frequencies of the specific diagnoses of bulimia nervosa and anorexia ner

Mental disorder and threats made by noninstitutionalized people with weapons in the national comorbidity survey replication.

Controversy exists as to whether mental disorders are associated with a higher risk of violent behavior. Data from the nationally-representative National Comorbidity Survey Replication was examined. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine whether mood, anxiety, impulse control, and substance use disorders were associated with a higher rate of potentially violent behavior as assessed by threatening others with a gun or other weapon. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, an association was found between mood, anxiety, impulse control, and substance use disorders and the rate o

Pathological gamblers, with and without substance use disorders, discount delayed rewards at high rates.

Pathological gambling is classified as a disorder of impulse control, yet little research has evaluated behavioral indices of impulsivity in gamblers. The rates at which rewards delayed in time are subjectively devalued may be a behavioral marker of impulsivity. This study evaluated delay discounting in 60 pathological gamblers and 26 control participants. Gamblers were divided into those with (n = 21) and without (n = 39) substance use disorders. A hypothetical $1,000 reward was delayed at intervals ranging from 6 hr to 25 years, and immediate rewards varied from $1 to $999. Pathological gamb

Factors that affect substance users' suicidal behavior: a view from the Addiction Severity Index in Korea.

BACKGROUND: In South Korea, it has not been easy to negotiate studies that target drug users who are being punished by law, and accordingly, no study on suicidal ideation among substance users has been accomplished yet. In this study, the factors that affect substance users' suicidal ideation were confirmed. METHODS: It was based on the data collected from 'The 2009 Study on Substance-Dependent Individuals in Korea' , which was conducted by The Catholic University of Korea in 2010 as a project sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea. This study targeted 523 former hospital in
