[Laparoscopic partial pericystectomy of hepatic hydatid cysts --Papadimitriou operation: a case report].

Operative treatment of hepatic hydatid cyst is technically demanding procedure. The method of choice is conservative treatment with Albendazolum followed by surgery. Open laparotomy or laparoscopic operation can be performed. We prefere laparoscopic exploration followed by laparoscopic total pericystectomy or laparoscopic partial pericystectomy. If laparoscopic operation is not possible due to technical reasons and patient safety, conversion to an open operation should be done, followed by total or partial pericystectomy. The case and our detailed technique of laparoscopic partial pericystecto

Nationwide analysis of minimally invasive surgical approach in patients with penetrating abdominal trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Exploratory laparotomy has been the main method for surgical interventions in penetrating abdominal trauma (PAT). Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been utilized in the treatment of selected trauma patients as an alternative to laparotomy. This study aimed to investigate the utilization of MIS and open approaches in patients with PAT. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgical treatment for PAT were included in this study using the National Inpatient Sample 2016-2020. Patients who underwent diagnostic laparoscopy or other laparoscopic or robotic procedures during admission were

Proficient surgeons enhance conversion rates and sphincter preservation in robotic rectal cancer surgery with comparable long-term outcomes: a comparative study with laparoscopy in a large-volume center in China.

BACKGROUND: Despite theoretical advantages, skepticism persists about robotic rectal cancer surgery due to the lack of evidence of benefit. This study aims to compare oncological and functional results of robotic-assisted surgery to laparoscopy, focusing on proficient surgeons with expertise in both techniques. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed and compared 1304 patients who underwent either robotic surgery (n = 295) or laparoscopic surgery (n = 1009) for rectal cancer. The surgical procedures were performed by a team of highly skilled surgeons who individually carry out more than 35

Morphologic Factors Associated With Open Conversion During Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is an association between patient body habitus as measured by body mass index (BMI), body surface area (BSA), preoperative prostate volume, postoperative specimen weight, and open conversion with cystotomy or perineal urethrotomy (PU) during holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). We attempt to provide meaningful criteria to assist in preoperative patient counseling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred consecutive patients underwent HoLEP between August 3, 2018 and February 20, 2020 by a single surgeon. Patient metrics were recorded in a database i

Perfoation of the gallbladder: 'bait' for the unsuspecting laparoscopic surgeon.

INTRODUCTION Cholecystectomy is one of the most common elective procedures carried out by general surgeons. Most patients present with typical biliary anatomy and simple gallstone disease. Intraoperative and postoperative courses are frequently predictable and uncomplicated. Nevertheless, a small but significant number of patients experience complicated disease with rare presentations and complex biliary anatomy. Unfortunately, consensus on appropriate care for such patients is lacking. CASE HISTORY We describe three patients who presented with complex manifestations of gallbladder perforation

The role of laparoscopy in staging of different gynaecological cancers.

Apart from cervical and vaginal cancers that are staged by clinical examination, most gynaecological cancers are staged surgically. Not only can pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy offer accurate staging information that helps determine patients' prognosis and hence their treatment plan, but it may also provide a therapeutic effect under certain circumstances. In the past, such a procedure required a big laparotomy incision. With the advent of laparoscopic lighting and instrument, laparoscopic lymphadenectomy became popular since the late 1980s. Dargent et al. published the first report on

Robotic Low Anterior Resection for Rectal Cancer: A National Perspective on Short-term Oncologic Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines short-term outcomes and pathologic surrogates of oncologic results among patients undergoing robotic versus laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer. A total of 6403 patients met inclusion criteria. Although the robotic approach required significantly fewer conversions to open, surrogates for proper oncologic surgery were nearly identical between the 2 approaches. BACKGROUND: Although laparoscopic low anterior resection (LLAR) has gained popularity as an acceptable approach, the robotic low anterior resection (RLAR) remains largely unproven. We comp

Indocyanine green does not decrease the need for bail-out operation in an acute care surgery population.

BACKGROUND: The use of indocyanine green during laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been postulated to help to define anatomy. Studies have not specifically evaluated patients with acute cholecystitis. We sought to assess whether use of indocyanine green can decrease the rate of bail-out operation (subtotal cholecystectomy or conversion to an open operation) in an acute care surgery population where acute cholecystitis is more frequent. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, we examined all inpatient cholecystectomies performed by the acute care surgery service under urgent or semiurgent

Aortic Banding to Treat Simultaneously a Type Ia Endoleak and Aortic Neck Rupture during Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

BACKGROUND: Type Ia endoleak due to inadequate seal at the proximal end of the endograft is not infrequent during the initial operation. However, repeated attempts at balloon inflation or over-dilatation of the balloon can produce high axial pressures and can lead to aortic neck rupture with hemodynamic instability. METHODS: The purpose of the paper is to present a useful technique for simultaneously treating a type Ia endoleak and aortic neck rupture during endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. RESULTS: The technique for treating a type Ia endoleak has been described, but it was us

Clinical factors associated with success in applying laparoscopy in the management of small bowel obstruction at a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive techniques have become standard approaches for many common surgical problems. However, the routine use of laparoscopy in the management of small bowel obstruction (SBO) has yet to be fully standardized. The objective of this study was to determine clinical factors associated with success of laparoscopy in managing SBO. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted by identifying all patients admitted to a large tertiary center with a diagnosis of SBO from 2014 to 2016. The operative cases were stratified by surgical approach: laparoscopy, laparoscopy conve
