Corpus callosum granuloma after endovascular squid embolisation of a ruptured arteriovenous malformation.

A late adolescent patient was admitted after a collapse and was found to have an intracranial haemorrhage due to an underlying midline arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The patient underwent trans-arterial squid embolisation of the AVM with good radiological resolution. 18 months later, the patient presented with new onset headaches. Cranial imaging demonstrated an enhancing lesion at the site of the previously thrombosed AVM in the corpus callosum. This was deemed to be a foreign body granuloma, a rare complication of intravascular embolisation of AVMs. The patient continued to have periodic …

Corpus Callosum Volumes in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Sex-Associated Differences.

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sex and corpus callosum (CC) volume in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) aged 2-4 years. This prospective study included 50 children with ASD and 50 typically developing (TD) children aged 2-4 years. Midsagittal slices of the CCs of the participants were divided into five subregions using FreeSurfer software. The PMCC, AMCC and TCC volumes were significantly higher in ASD participants than in TD participants, and results were significant in females with ASD rather than in males with ASD (all P < 0.05). In toddlers with ASD, the C…

Corpus callosum morphology in major mental disorders: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

Mental disorders diagnosis is based on specific clinical criteria. However, clinical studies found similarities and overlapping phenomenology across a variety of disorders, which suggests a common neurobiological substrate. Thus, there is a need to measure disease-related neuroanatomical similarities and differences across conditions. While structural alterations of the corpus callosum have been investigated in obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, no study has addressed callosal aberrations in all diseases in a single study. Moreover, re…

DCC regulates astroglial development essential for telencephalic morphogenesis and corpus callosum formation.

The forebrain hemispheres are predominantly separated during embryogenesis by the interhemispheric fissure (IHF). Radial astroglia remodel the IHF to form a continuous substrate between the hemispheres for midline crossing of the corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampal commissure (HC). Deleted in colorectal carcinoma (DCC) and netrin 1 (NTN1) are molecules that have an evolutionarily conserved function in commissural axon guidance. The CC and HC are absent in Dcc and Ntn1 knockout mice, while other commissures are only partially affected, suggesting an additional aetiology in forebrain commissure…

Clinical Features, Etiology, and 6-Month Prognosis of Isolated Corpus Callosum Infarction.

As the largest subcortical commissural fiber, the corpus callosum plays an important role in cerebral functions and has abundant blood supply from bilateral circulation. Isolated corpus callosum infarction (ICCI) may have specific characteristics. The aim of the study is to evaluate the clinical features, etiology, and 6-month prognosis of ICCI. Consecutive patients with acute ICCI treated at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital between June 2012 and June 2016 were retrospectively assessed for clinical and imaging findings. These cases were compared with patients suffering from other isolated s…

Differences in corpus callosum injury between cerebral concussion and diffuse axonal injury.

BACKGROUND: We investigated differences in corpus callosum (CC) injuries between patients with concussion and those with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) by using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with concussion, 21 patients with DAI, and 25 control subjects were recruited. We reconstructed the whole CC and 5 regions of the CC after applying Hofer classification (I, II, III, IV, and V). The whole CC and each region of the CC were analyzed to measure DTT parameters (fractional anisotropy [FA], apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC], and fiber number [FN]). RESULTS: …

The Corpus Callosum Splenium Sign in Fragile X-Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hyperintensities in the splenium of the corpus callosum (CCS) have been proposed as a radiographic diagnostic criterion for fragile X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). METHODS: Magnetic resonance images from patients with FXTAS and from nonpremutation carriers with movement disorders were viewed by a radiologist who was blinded to gene status, and radiographic criteria for FXTAS were scored. Phenotypic data used for diagnosis of FXTAS also were collected. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients with FXTAS and 23 controls were included. Hyperintensity in the CCS (the CCS sign) was m…

Corpus callosum measurements correlate with developmental delay in Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is a multiple malformation, neurodevelopmental disorder of cholesterol metabolism caused by mutations in 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase. Corpus callosum (CC) malformations and developmental delay are common, but the relation between the two has not been evaluated. This study hypothesizes shorter callosal length and smaller area correlate with higher serum 7-dehydrocholesterol and increased severity of neurodevelopmental delay in SLOS. METHODS: Thirty-six individuals with SLOS (18M/18F) between 0.20 and 12.5 years (mean = 3.9, SD = 3.6) and 36 typi…

Gli3 controls corpus callosum formation by positioning midline guideposts during telencephalic patterning.

The corpus callosum (CC) represents the major forebrain commissure connecting the 2 cerebral hemispheres. Midline crossing of callosal axons is controlled by several glial and neuronal guideposts specifically located along the callosal path, but it remains unknown how these cells acquire their position. Here, we show that the Gli3 hypomorphic mouse mutant Polydactyly Nagoya (Pdn) displays agenesis of the CC and mislocation of the glial and neuronal guidepost cells. Using transplantation experiments, we demonstrate that agenesis of the CC is primarily caused by midline defects. These defects or…

Genomic microarray analysis identifies candidate loci in patients with corpus callosum anomalies.

Absence of the corpus callosum is often associated with cognitive deficits, autism, and epilepsy. Using a genomic microarray, the authors analyzed DNA from 25 patients with radiographically confirmed callosal anomalies and identified three patients with de novo copy number changes in chromosome regions 2q37, 6qter, and 8p. Chromosomal deletions and duplications may be a relatively common cause of cerebral malformations.

Larger corpus callosum size with better motor performance in prematurely born children.

The objective of this study is to determine the relation between the size of the corpus callosum (CC) and motor performance in a population-based cohort of preterm children. Preterm born children (n = 221) with a gestational age less than or equal to 32 weeks and/or a birth weight below 1500 g were eligible for this study. At the age of 7 or 8 years, frontal, middle, posterior, and total areas (mm2) of the corpus callosum were measured on true midsagittal MRI. Due to anxiety of 10 children and motion artifacts in 7 other children, 204 MRIs could be assessed in the preterm group (mean GA 29.4 w…

Thrombocytopenia absent corpus callosum syndrome: third case of a distinct clinical entity.

Thrombocytopenia absent corpus callosum, characterized by refractory thrombocytopenia, agenesis of the corpus callosum, hypoplastic cerebellum, abnormal facies, and developmental delay, represents a relatively newly described clinical entity. An 18-month-old girl with agenesis of the corpus callosum, hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, hypotonia, and severe developmental delay presented with thrombocytopenia. She had a distinctive facies with microcephaly, broad nasal root with upturned nose, small upper lip, and micrognathia. A bone marrow aspirate and biopsy showed normal cellularity with d…

Corpus callosum atrophy in patients with leukoaraiosis may indicate global cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The extent of white matter high-intensity lesions (WMLs) on T2-weighted MR images may be an indicator of cognitive impairment, especially impairment related to frontal lobe dysfunction. However, it is unclear whether the extent of WMLs is an independent predictor of cognitive impairment. In patients with extensive WMLs, atrophy of the corpus callosum may be an important predictor of global cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of the extent of WMLs and callosal size with cognitive functions in a patient population with a wide ra…

Ring chromosome 14 complicated with complex partial seizures and hypoplastic corpus callosum.

A Japanese male with mosaicism of ring chromosome 14 and chromosome 14 monosomy is described. He demonstrated the characteristic morphologic features of ring chromosome 14, in addition to mental retardation and epileptic seizures. Clusters of complex partial seizures, one of which originated in the left frontocentral region on electroencephalographic monitoring, were evident. His seizures responded to phenobarbital, and his mental and motor development was only mildly retarded. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a hypoplastic corpus callosum, previously unknown in association with this syndro…
