Overexpression of Fgf18 in cranial neural crest cells recapitulates Pierre Robin sequence in mice.

The pivotal role of FGF18 in the regulation of craniofacial and skeletal development has been well established. Previous studies have demons … using the Wnt1-Cre;pMes-Fgf18 mouse model. The results showed that overexpression of Fgf18 leads to craniofacial abnormalities in mice similar to the Pierre Robin sequence in humans, including abnormal tongue morphology, micrognathia, and cleft palate. Further examination revealed that elevated levels of Fgf18 activated the Akt and Erk signaling pathways, leading to an incr …

Quantitation of craniofacial anomalies in utero: fetal alcohol and Crouzon syndromes and thanatophoric dysplasia.

The study of fetal growth and development by ultrasound has been greatly facilitated in the past few years by the availability of anthropometric standards for the fetal body. Thus, the obstetrician is able to discern between normal and grossly abnormal, and even to quantitate certain fine fetal structures such as the face. This paper presents results obtained from a group of 5 patients referred to the Medical Center from private practices in Indianapolis, Indiana. Prenatal cephalometric analyses by ultrasound suggested the presence of craniofacial anomalies in all 5 cases. However, such defect

A Cardiocraniofacial Syndrome Associated With a Novel Missense Variant in GATA6: A Fetal Case Report.

Hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS) is an uncommon congenital cardiac defect, characterized by variable underdevelopment of the right-sided heart structures. We report on a case of HRHS in a 25-week female fetus. Prenatal karyotype was normal. Autopsy performed following pregnancy termination demonstrated characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism and complex congenital heart disease encompassing severe hypoplasia of the right ventricle, main pulmonary artery and tricuspid valve, ostium secundum atrial septal defect, and ductus arteriosus agenesis. Macroscopic and histologic examinations of t

The effect of a course of selected corrective exercises on posture, scapula-humeral rhythm and performance of adolescent volleyball players with upper cross syndrome.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the effect of a course of selected corrective exercises on posture, scapula-humeral rhythm and performance of adolescent volleyball players. METHODS: 30 adolescent volleyball players with upper cross syndrome were purposefully selected and assigned into 2 control and training groups. The degree of back curvature was evaluated using a flexible ruler, forward head and forward shoulder size by photographic method, scapula-humeral rhythm by Lateral Scapular Slide Test (LSST), and performance by closed kinetic chain test. The training group performed the

IoT-Based Solution for Detecting and Monitoring Upper Crossed Syndrome.

A sedentary lifestyle has caused adults to spend more than 6 h seated, which has led to inactivity and spinal issues. This context underscores the growing sedentary behavior, exemplified by extended sitting hours among adults and university students. Such inactivity triggers various health problems and spinal disorders, notably Upper Crossed Syndrome (UCS) and its association with thoracic kyphosis, which can cause severe spinal curvature and related complications. Traditional detection involves clinical assessments and corrective exercises; however, this work proposes a multi-layered system f

Association of feed efficiency with organ characteristics and fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome in laying hens.

Poor feed efficiency (FE) in hens impacts body weight (BW) and may reflect suboptimal health. Fatty Liver Haemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS) is mostly observed in laying hens and affects egg production and hen performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of FE and BW with organ characteristics, liver composition and incidence of FLHS of 150 individually housed ISA Brown hens ranked on the basis of feed conversion ratio (FCR) attained from early lay. At 45 weeks, 10 birds per FE group (HFE-High feed efficient; MFE-medium feed efficient; LFE-low feed efficient) were randomly

Imagawa-Matsumoto syndrome: SUZ12-related overgrowth disorder.

The SUZ12 gene encodes a subunit of polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) that is essential for development by silencing the expression of multiple genes. Germline heterozygous variants in SUZ12 have been found in Imagawa-Matsumoto syndrome (IMMAS) characterized by overgrowth and multiple dysmorphic features. Similarly, both EZH2 and EED also encode a subunit of PRC2 each and their pathogenic variants cause Weaver syndrome and Cohen-Gibson syndrome, respectively. Clinical manifestations of these syndromes significantly overlap, although their different prevalence rates have recently been noted:

Congenital Midline Cervical Cleft (CMCC): Z-Plasty Versus Linear Cutaneous Repair.

Congenital midline cervical cleft (CMCC) is a rare congenital difference. Accurate diagnosis is important to ensure appropriate treatment. CMCC results in both functional and esthetic concerns addressed by surgical management. While the majority of reported CMCC cases have been treated with a z-plasty, the best method of repair has been debated in the literature. The authors present a case of CMCC and review of the literature.

Clinical diversity and molecular mechanism of VPS35L-associated Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome.

PURPOSE: The Retriever subunit VPS35L is the third responsible gene for Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome (RSS) after WASHC5 and CCDC22. To date, only one pair of siblings have been reported and their condition was significantly more severe than typical RSS. This study aimed to understand the clinical spectrum and underlying molecular mechanism in VPS35L-associated RSS. METHODS: We report three new patients with biallelic VPS35L variants. Biochemical and cellular analyses were performed to elucidate disease aetiology. RESULTS: In addition to typical features of RSS, we confirmed hypercholesterolaem

Clinical Utility of a Unique Genome-Wide DNA Methylation Signature for KMT2A-Related Syndrome.

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WDSTS) is a Mendelian syndromic intellectual disability (ID) condition associated with hypertrichosis cubiti, short stature, and characteristic facies caused by pathogenic variants in the KMT2A gene. Clinical features can be inconclusive in mild and unusual WDSTS presentations with variable ID (mild to severe), facies (typical or not) and other associated malformations (bone, cerebral, renal, cardiac and ophthalmological anomalies). Interpretation and classification of rare KMT2A variants can be challenging. A genome-wide DNA methylation episignature for KMT2A-relat

Cross-syndrome: myasthenia gravis and the demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system combination. Systematic literature review and case reports.

Nowadays the problem of comorbidity is still relevant. In this review, we describe clinical cases of the disease of the neuromuscular junction (myasthenia gravis (MG) generalized form) and the demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (DD CNS) (multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), etc.) combinations registered in our practice with precise pathogenetic analysis. Although the number of the described associations is growing every year, the exact development mechanisms of this cross syndrome as well as the nature of the association between the discussed aut

Robinow syndrome in a newborn presenting with hydrocephalus and craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Robinow syndrome is a rare entity with a characteristic appearance, such as hypertelorism, short stature, mesomelic shortening of the limbs, hypoplastic genitalia, and rib as well as vertebral anomalies. We had treated a patient with Robinow syndrome who developed hydrocephalus and craniosynostosis which is not usually associated. CASE PRESENTATION: The ventricle enlargement was detected during pregnancy in a female infant. She did not develop hydrocephalus just after birth. Her facial appearance was fetus-like, so the pediatricians had suspected Robinow syndrome. During follow-

Anterior Fontanelle Wormian Bone With Exomphalos Major and Dysmorphic Facial Features: A Previously Unseen Association?

Wormian bones are independent ossification centers found within cranial sutures or fontanelles. Though common in adult populations, their presence in children can be associated with several conditions such as osteogenesis imperfecta, hypothyroidism, pyknodysostosis, cleidocranial dysostosis, rickets, and acrocallosal syndrome. These conditions encompass a large range of clinical features but there has only been 1 other reported patient of exomphalos occurring concurrently with these ossicles. The authors present the case of a child with an anterior fontanellar Wormian bone, dysmorphic facial f
