INTRODUCTION: Normal aging is characterised by alterations affecting the cognitive functions. In 1958 Kral coined the term 'benign senescent forgetfulness' to designate a memory disorder that is different from those that occur during normal aging. In 1986, a group of researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and other centres proposed a novel neuropsychological entity called age-related memory disorder. The determination of the prevalence, progression and risk factors of this condition currently represents an important challenge for the scientific community.

During the Cuban dengue epidemics of 1981 and 1997, significant monthly increases were observed in the proportion of total cases that presented as dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS), and in case-fatality rates for both dengue fever and DHF/DSS. Viral sequences of the cerebrospinal fluid were amplified by using oligonucleotides that are homologous to region 5' of the Enteroviruses. The results showed a great variability in the amplified sequences, suggesting the presence of enteroviral quasispecies with altered biological properties in the stressed individuals that may play an important role in the neurological damage.

Land mines produce devastating injuries which are usually fatal. In Guantanamo Bay, there have been no survivors from close range, functioning antipersonnel mines of the M-16 series. All 15 antipersonnel mine fatalities suffered extremity amputation. Seven of the 15 patients suffered immediately fatal head, neck, or truncal injuries (Type I injury). The three patients who underwent hospital resuscitation had extremity amputation but were spared major head, neck, or truncal injury. Aedes (Fredwardsius) vittatus (Bigot) has a native geographical distribution that encompasses tropical areas of Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean region of Europe. In its native range, this mosquito species is a potential vector of the dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Currently, Ae. vittatus is reported in the Caribbean countries of Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.
