Training Nonexpert Users in Cardiopulmonary Point-of-Care Ultrasound Using a Virtual Curriculum and a Teleconsultation Model: A Multicentre Study.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in access to postgraduate cardiopulmonary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training have limited uptake by nonspecialists in remote care centres. This multicentre pre-post study evaluated the skill improvement of learners after they participated in a longitudinal and virtual POCUS training program. METHODS: Nonexpert POCUS users were recruited at urban teaching hospitals and geographically remote hospitals/nursing stations across 4 Canadian provinces. The 3-week educational program consisted of e-learning, independent imaging practice, and point-of-care tele-ultrasound

Innovation in Medical Education on Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities: Report on the National Inclusive Curriculum for Health Education-Medical Initiative.

The lack of physician training in serving patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) has been highlighted as a key modifiable root cause of health disparities experienced by this high-priority public health population. To address gaps in medical education regarding the lack of IDD curriculum, lack of evaluation/assessment, and lack of coordination across institutions, the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry created the National Inclusive Curriculum for Health Education-Medical (NICHE-MED) Initiative in 2016. The aims of NICHE-MED are to: (1) impact me…

Impacts of a Multicenter Medical Education Curriculum for Training Pediatric Residents on Tobacco Cessation for Adult Caregivers of Pediatric Patients.

The Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) is an evidence-based framework that increases pediatric providers' ability to address secondhand smoke exposure of minors. Physician champions at 4 University of California sites conducted regular 1-hour didactic trainings on CEASE principles to pediatric residents as part of a longitudinal curriculum. At the conclusion of the academic year, 111 of 284 residents (39%) completed an anonymous survey. CEASE-trained residents reported significantly higher rates than untrained residents of counseling on smoking cessation (adjusted odds r…

Using formative research to develop HEARTS: A curriculum-based healthy relationships promoting intervention for individuals on the autism spectrum.

What is already known about the topic? All people can benefit from education about how to have healthy friendships and dating relationships. But specific interventions on relationship skills-like respecting boundaries, identifying warning signs of abuse, or talking about sexual preferences-are too rare, particularly for autistic individuals. The goal of this study was to collect formative data from autistic emerging adults to help create a new, six-session workshop for autistic young adults to support healthy peer relationships. Twenty-five autistic youth aged 16-22 years old were interviewed.

Association of Mentorship and a Formal Robotic Proficiency Skills Curriculum With Subsequent Generations' Learning Curve and Safety for Robotic Pancreaticoduodenectomy.

IMPORTANCE: Learning curves are unavoidable for practicing surgeons when adopting new technologies. However, patient outcomes are worse in the early stages of a learning curve vs after mastery. Therefore, it is critical to find a way to decrease these learning curves without compromising patient safety. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of mentorship and a formal proficiency-based skills curriculum with the learning curves of 3 generations of surgeons and to determine the association with increased patient safety. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: All consecutive robotic pancreaticoduo…

Efficacy of a Standardized Computer-Based Training Curriculum to Teach Echocardiographic Identification of Rheumatic Heart Disease to Nonexpert Users.

The ability to integrate echocardiographic for rheumatic heart disease (RHD) into RHD prevention programs is limited because of lack of financial and expert human resources in endemic areas. Task shifting to nonexperts is promising; but investigations into workforce composition and training schemes are needed. The objective of this study was to test nonexperts' ability to interpret RHD screening echocardiograms after a brief, standardized, computer-based training course. Six nonexperts completed a 3-week curriculum on image interpretation. Participant performance was tested in a school-screeni…

The curriculum of practice: a conceptual framework for speech-language therapy and audiology practice with a black African first language clientele.

This paper discusses the use of a conceptual framework (i.e., the curriculum of practice) to guide the transformation of professional practice toward equitable service provision, rooted in a research finding that South African Speech-Language Therapy & Audiology has a favourable service bias toward White English/Afrikaans first language speakers (Pillay, 1997b). Three perspectives of practice are discussed, i.e., the official, espoused and actual perspectives. Also, the various elements of practice are reviewed, and include clinical practice activities, resources and their utilization, profess…

A Scoping Review of Interventional Radiology Curricula for Medical Students and Correlation with Kern's Six-Step Framework for Curriculum Development.

Interventional radiology (IR) plays an increasingly important role in modern healthcare; however, its integration into undergraduate medical education remains inconsistent. This scoping review evaluated IR teaching for medical students against Kern's six-step framework. A search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases, through July 2026, identified 36 studies examining IR exposure, teaching strategies, and educational outcomes. IR teaching is consistently underrepresented. Educational interventions included didactic teaching, case-based learning, and digital platf

United States Medical and Dental Curricula on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Inclusion of People with IDD in Curriculum Creation and Delivery.

Surveys of medical trainees have found that while students agree on the importance of understanding clinical care of people with disabilities, the majority of medical students do not feel competent treating these populations. The purpose of this descriptive mixed-methods study was to better characterize efforts in a non-random sample of US medical and dental schools to include material about intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) in their curricula, with particular attention to the meaningful involvement of people with IDD in curriculum development and delivery. This study consiste…
