Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on 8 November 2013 with maximum sustained winds of 235 kilometres per hour, adversely affecting at least 11 million people and displacing some 673,000 in the central regions of the country. The disaster clearly overwhelmed the Philippine government despite its seemingly well-crafted disaster management plan. Using timelines of different organisations, this paper identifies gaps in the government's response, mainly due to its failure in coordinating and managing relief operations, which adversely affected its effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Hospital evacuations have myriad effects on all elements of the health care system. We seek to (1) examine the effect of patient surge on hospitals that received patients from evacuating hospitals in New York City during Hurricane Sandy; (2) describe operational challenges those hospitals faced pre- and poststorm; and (3) examine the coordination efforts to distribute patients to receiving hospitals.
METHODS: We used a qualitative, interview-based method to identify medical surge strategies used at hospitals receiving patients from evacuated health care facilities during and

BACKGROUND: Identifying individuals at risk for mental health problems after a disaster often involves assessing potentially traumatic exposures inherent to the disaster. Survivors of disasters also may have been exposed, both before and during the event, to trauma not directly related to the disaster. A substantial literature suggests exposure to interpersonal violence may have more severe negative outcomes than exposure to non-violent events; however, it is unclear whether violent vs nonviolent exposures before and during a disaster have differential effects on postdisaster psychological fun

OBJECTIVES: Nonprobability sampling, commonly used in disaster research, can lead to incorrect estimates or limit the generalizability of results. We collected data through the Texas Flood Registry (TFR) and used raking and propensity score weighting to provide insight into the effect of Hurricane Harvey (hereinafter, Harvey) on Harris County, Texas.
METHODS: From April 2018 through October 2020, residents of areas affected by Harvey enrolled in the TFR completed a survey on their storm-related experiences (n = 20 653). Using logistic regression, we assessed the relationship between Harvey-re

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of accelerating climate change and more frequent extreme weather events, typhoon disasters have become a major challenge to mental health. Based on the Social Determinants of Health theory and integrating the Cumulative Disadvantage Model with Structural Causal Influence analysis, this study evaluates how typhoon exposure affects the burden of mental health disorders and how these effects vary with social structural differences.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms linking typhoon exposure to the burden of mental health disorders, and to quantify the moder

INTRODUCTION: Poor self-rated health (i.e., perceived health status relative to same-aged individuals) is associated with elevated all-cause mortality. Research examining post-disaster self-rated health is limited but could inform disaster theory and interventions. Identifying and subsequently mitigating individual and contextual determinants of self-rated health could address adverse, downstream effects.
METHOD: The current study includes secondary analyses from a randomized controlled trial of a digital mental health intervention in a diverse sample of 1357 hurricane-affected adults (49.5%

IMPORTANCE: Hurricanes are associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, yet little is known about whether these risks extend into the long term and for how long.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between hurricane-related flooding and CVD risk up to 5 years after landfall.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included a 20% national sample of continuously enrolled Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries from New Jersey, New York City, and Connecticut from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2017. Data were analyzed from December 14, 2023, to June 20, 2025.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that PPE is underused during mold cleanup after hurricanes, despite mold's association with adverse health outcomes. This study aims to improve understanding of decision-making around PPE use to shape messaging after natural disasters.
METHODS: A convenience sample of adult residents and workers in Louisiana parishes affected by Hurricane Ida responded to closed- and open-ended questions about mold cleanup perceptions. Content analysis drew on the Health Belief Model (HBM).
RESULTS: Qualitative findings indicate that perceived barriers to PPE use included discomf

BACKGROUND: Climate change has exacerbated the frequency, intensity, and impacts of extreme weather events (EWEs), such as tropical cyclones. However, the increasing impact of tropical cyclones on child mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), remains understudied.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Utilizing individual-level data from the Demographic and Health Surveys, we conducted a sibling-matched case-control study to assess the impact of cyclone exposure over the past 3 months on under-five mortality. The study included 100,798 under-five deaths and 247,445 controls across

CONTEXT: Climate disasters have been tied to prenatal stress and pregnancy outcomes. However, it is unclear if these outcomes are influenced by the stage of foetal development when the disaster hits.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the birth outcomes by trimester for those pregnant during Hurricane Florence and those in the same community 1-2 years earlier. We further assessed the role of marital status and race.
METHODS: We included people who gave birth between 2016-2019 in one of the coastal communities impacted by Hurricane Florence (n = 7,240). We used multiple logistic regression to determine th

IMPORTANCE: Mobility, defined as the ability to move freely, decreases with increasing age. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events (EWCEs), such as hurricanes, pose a considerable risk for older adults (aged ≥65 years) to maintain their mobility (ie, mobility resilience).
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an association exists between older-aged neighborhoods and mobility resilience following an EWCE.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series study used 2022 demographics with prospectively observed social infrastructure point-of-interest visitation

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people worldwide. While the relationship between direct exposure to traumatic events and PTSD is well-established, the influence of indirect trauma exposure on PTSD remains unclear. It is similarly unclear what role cumulative exposure to direct and indirect traumas play in the risk of PTSD.
METHODS: The study uses data from the Houston Trauma and Recovery Study, conducted on 2020-2021, and involved a random sampling of 1,167 individuals residing in Houston during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Participants were asked about their

Natural disasters may lead to infectious disease outbreaks when they result in substantial population displacement and exacerbate synergic risk factors (change in the environment, in human conditions and in the vulnerability to existing pathogens) for disease transmission. We reviewed risk factors and potential infectious diseases resulting from prolonged secondary effects of major natural disasters that occurred from 2000 to 2011. Natural disasters including floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, tropical cyclones (e.g., hurricanes and typhoons) and tornadoes have been secondarily described with the

A mass fatality DNA identification effort is a complex process in which direct matching and kinship analysis is used for identifying human remains. Kinship DNA identification is an important tool in the identification process in which victim's DNA profiles are compared to the profiles of "known" biologically related reference samples. Experience from the 9/11 World Trade Center DNA identification efforts showed that forms used to record biological relationships are important and that inaccurately documented information may hamper the kinship analysis and DNA identification process. In the iden

Hydrometeorological forecasting and early warning involve many hazardous elements, with the estimation of intensity and center location of tropical cyclones (TCs) being key. This paper proposes a new multitask deep learning model with attention gate mechanisms to work with satellite images and construct heatmaps for TC's centering and classification. The multi-head keypoint design (MHKD) with the spatial attention mechanism (SAM) is fitted to the decoder layer using multi-resolution inputs from the encoder. In addition, the new loss function is employed with an Euclidean distance to guide cent
