Cystic carcinoma of the breast: a trap for the unwary.

Cystic breast masses are a common presentation to breast clinics. While the majority of cysts can be managed by simple aspiration, a small proportion are malignant. Histology records for a 10-year period have been examined to identify patients with cystic breast carcinomas. In all, 31 patients were identified. Of these, 18 had cystic degeneration of high-grade tumours, while 13 had intracystic papillary carcinoma. Both of these tumour types were diagnosed by a combination of cyst fluid cytology and breast imaging. The prognosis of high-grade tumours was poor, while that of intracystic papillar…

The use of acoustic streaming in breast lesion diagnosis: a clinical study.

Results from a clinical study are presented, in which ultrasonically-induced acoustic streaming was successfully used to differentiate fluid-filled lesions (cysts) from solid lesions in the breast. In this study, high-intensity ultrasound pulses from a modified commercial scanner were used to induce acoustic streaming in cyst fluid, and this motion was detected using Doppler methods. Acoustic streaming was generated and detected in 14 of 15 simple cysts, and 4 of 14 sonographically indeterminate breast lesions. This lesion differentiation method appears to be particularly suited for diagnosis …

Rare Case of Hydatid Cyst in the Cerebellopontine Cistern.

Posterior fossa localization of a hydatid cyst is uncommon; in these cases, the cysts usually grow in the cerebellum. Localization within the subarachnoid spaces or the cerebrospinal fluid ventricular system is exceptional. In the present report, which appears to be the sixth in the literature, we describe a case of a hydatid cyst in the cerebellopontine cistern. Magnetic resonance imaging findings revealed a nonneoplastic cystic lesion mimicking an arachnoid cyst. The hydatid nature of the cyst was unexpected preoperatively. The cyst was successfully removed using the puncture, aspiration, ir

Removal of a giant intrathoracic cyst from the anterior mediastinum.

A 45-year-old caucasian man with progressive dyspnea appeared to have a giant intrathoracic cyst in the anterior mediastinum encasing the heart and compressing both lungs. He underwent successful removal of the cyst through a median sternotomy. Recovery was uneventful. Gross examination revealed a thin-walled cyst filled with clear fluid. Microscopic histopathologic examination revealed a cyst wall lined by cubic cells and underlying loose connective tissue with remnants of thymic tissue. The definitive diagnosis was an intrathoracic (simple) mesothelial cyst. An intrathoracic mesothelial cyst

Analysis of antigen specificity using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to Cysticercus cellulosae by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot technique.

To analyse the antigen specificity of patients sera from 24 confirmed neurocysticercosis and a monoclonal antibody, SDS-PAGE using 10-15% linear gradient gel and EITB were done. Cystic fluid, saline extracts of scolex and of whole worm of C. cellulosae, saline extracts of sparganum, hydatid cyst fluid, saline extracts of Fasciola, Clonorchis and Paragonimus were used as antigen. Of protein bands in cystic fluid of C. cellulosae, patient sera reacted frequently to bands of 152, 94, 64, 48, 24, 15, 10 and 7 kDa proteins. To saline extracts of scolex and whole worm of C. cellulosae, patients sera…

Salivary duct cyst of accessory parotid gland in contact with the temporomandibular joint.

A 60-year-old woman presented with a painless swelling in the right preauricular region. Physical examination revealed a soft, nontender, oval-shaped lump in this location. Computed tomography indicated an anterolateral cystic lesion that was attached to the condyle of the mandible and to the accessory parotid gland. Differential diagnoses included ganglion cyst, synovial cyst of the temporomandibular joint, and accessory parotid gland cyst. Surgical removal of the cyst was performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The specimen was 18 × 20 × 18 mm in size; it contained fluid that wa

Primary Orbital Hydatid Cyst: A Case Report.

Hydatid cyst is a rare parasitic infection that involved all organs. It caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus tapeworms. Hydatid cyst of the head and neck is a very rare condition, even in areas where Echinococcus infestation is endemic. Orbital hydatid cyst is extremely rare and accounts for less than 1% of all hydatid cysts. Herein a 24-year-old man with primary orbital hydatid cyst is introduced. He complained from proptosis and diplopia. MRI images revealed a lesion with low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, which displaced the opt

Cardiac Tamponade Due to Actinomyces odontolyticus Originating From a Dentigerous Cyst.

This report describes a rare case of pericardial effusion owing to Actinomyces odontolyticus in a 52-year-old woman that originated from a dentigerous cyst, which developed on the distal aspect of a lower left third molar. The cyst had remained asymptomatic for a long period, with no specific functional complications. This is the first case report of a patient with acute pericarditis in which the same strain of A odontolyticus was detected in an asymptomatic dentigerous cyst and in the pericardial fluid.

Fibrinolytic activity in aneurysmal bone cysts.

Euglobulin fibrinolytic activity of cyst fluid from six patients with aneurysmal bone cysys was considerably higher than that of arterial and venous blood of the corresponding patients. The high fibrinolytic activity was associated with a very low concentration of fibrinogen and a low concentration of plasminogen. Correspondingly, a high plasminogen activator activity was found in cyst tissue related to endothelial lining. It is suggested that fibrinolysis is an important factor in the maintenance and expansion of the aneurysmal bone cyst.

Spermatozoa-containing simple cysts of the rete testis.

Simple cysts of the testis are rare benign lesions of uncertain etiology. We report 2 spermatozoa-containing cysts of the rete testis found incidentally in the left testicle of a 56-year-old man evaluated by ultrasound for hydrocele. The presence of spermatozoa in the cyst fluid has not been observed previously and confirms the connection of the cysts with the seminiferous tubular system.

Performance of antigen B isolated from different hosts and cyst locations in diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the performance of Antigen B (AgB) isolated from different Echinococcusgranulosus intermediate hosts and from different cyst locations for immunodiagnosis of human cystic echinococcosis (CE). METHODS: Hydatid cyst fluids were collected from lung and liver cysts of sheep, liver cysts of goats, lung cysts of camels and cattle, and liver cysts of human. AgB was purified from each of these hydatid cysts fluids. Serum samples obtained from 47 pathologically confirmed cases of CE along with 30 sera samples from non-CE patients and 40 sera from healthy…

Outcome of Deformity Correction of Malunited Fracture of the Tibia: An Uncommon Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Enterogenous cysts (also known as neurenteric cysts) are rare congenital lesions presumed to arise from an abnormal persistent communication between embryonic ectodermal and endodermal tissues. They may be symptomatic or asymptomatic, and generally have an insidious and prolonged clinical course. They are typically intradural and extramedullary in location. Very few cases of extramedullary enterogenous cysts have been reported in the literature, most of which were cranial. We present a rare case of an anteriorly situated extradural enterogenous cyst at the level of the thoracic s

Extradural spinal cyst in a pediatric patient: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts comprise <1% of all spinal lesions and are rare findings in pediatric patients. The pathogenesis of spinal extradural arachnoid cysts is not well known but is thought to most commonly be due to congenital dural defects. Other origins include trauma, inflammation, or infection, such as arachnoiditis. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for diagnosis, showing a fluid-filled space dorsal to the spinal cord with signal intensity akin to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and often the site of dural defect with CSF leak. While most spinal extr

Expanding Cyst of the Septum Pellucidum - Endoscopic Observations on the Mechanism of Development and Results of Treatment.

Cysts of the septum pellucidum (CSP) are usually asymptomatic; however, in some cases they can begin expanding and cause neurological deterioration. The mechanism leading to the formation of an expanding cyst of the septum pellucidum (ECSP) is not known. Based on observations made during endoscopic treatment of ECSP we analyzed intraoperative findings in respect to cyst formation mechanism and treatment prognosis. A group of 31 patients was studied. Only cases with bulging cyst walls occupying the frontal horns observed on imaging studies were included. The main symptom was a severe, intermitt

Bone morphogenetic protein-induced inflammatory cyst formation after lumbar fusion causing nerve root compression.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) has been reported to cause early inflammatory changes, ectopic bony formation, adjacent level fusion, radiculitis, and osteolysis. The authors describe the case of a patient who developed inflammatory fibroblastic cyst formation around the BMP sponge after a lumbar fusion, resulting in compressive lumbar radiculopathy. A 70-year-old woman presented with left L-4 and L-5 radiculopathy caused by a Grade I spondylolisthesis with a left herniated disc at L4-5. She underwent a minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion with BMP packed into the interbo

Temporomandibular joint synovial cysts: A systematic review of the literature and a report of two cases.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) synovial cysts are rare, unlike peripheric locations like the wrist or the knee. They share similar presentations with ganglion cyst, benign and sometimes malignant lesions. Only histopathological analysis confirms diagnosis in some cases, finding a true cyst lined by synoviocytes containing synovial fluid. They seem to be related to an increased articular pressure following trauma. In this study we present two cases of TMJ synovial cyst and a systematic review of the literature. A total of 32 cases were retrieved from published literature in PubMed, Cochrane Libr

Symptomatic presentation and imaging features of a chylous cystic lymphangioma.

A woman in her 60s presenting with 5 days of diffuse abdominal pain was diagnosed preoperatively with a chylolymphatic mesenteric cyst. MRI and CT imaging demonstrated a 5.8 cm unilocular cyst containing a fluid-fluid level within the mesentery. Following an uncomplicated open excision, the lesion was characterised by pathology as a cystic lymphangioma due to the presence of focal smooth muscle and lymphoid tissue in the wall. This case report discusses the radiologic features of rare lymphatic mesenteric cysts that can help guide preoperative diagnosis and highlights that postoperative diagno
