[The deaf child: anatomy, etiologies and management].

Temporal bone imaging in children shows radioanatomical aspects and diseases distinct from the imaging and pathology results found in adults. Imaging modalities such as CT and MR bring out these differences. The aim of this study is to present the CT and MR particularities of the temporal bone during postnatal growth. The mastoid air cells form mostly in the postnatal period and the course of pneumatization is directly correlated with middle ear successive inflammatory episodes. The most frequent etiologies of hearing loss in children are reviewed, emphasizing their specificities in clinical p

[Sudden deafness as a presentation of acoustic neuroma].

Sudden deafness (SD) is thought to be a heterogenic group of disorders as to etiopathogenesis. Acoustic neuroma should always be considered in the differential diagnosis. The authors analysed symptoms occurring in the group of 89 patients, diagnosed with acoustic neuroma. A special attention was paid to the role of sudden deafness as a clinical manifestation of the VIIIth nerve pathology. Progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, headache and sudden deafness were the most common complaints. Sudden deafness was developed by approximately 1 of the investigated patients (24.7%). Progressive hearing los…

Deaf child--a general practitioner's responsibility.

The power of a child's speaking language never develops if he is deaf. Deafness persists if it is not detected early. Childhood deafness is either congenital or acquired. At birth, doctors or attendants can detect deafness by arousing the baby with sudden loud noise. At 4 months onwards mothers and doctors can detect deafness. The baby at this age can turn its head or eyes towards the source of the sound. By 12 months to 2 years of age it is very difficult to detect deafness. By the age of 3 years children again become co-operative and it becomes easier to detect deafness. Children should alwa…

Preliminary cardiological examinations in deaf children.

There is some evidence that deaf children are more threatened than the general population by dangerous heart arrhythmias. An example is Jervell-Lange-Nielsen syndrome (one of the forms of long QT syndrome) which is characterised primarily by congenital deafness and prolongation of the QT interval. The aim of this study was to perform preliminary cardiological examinations on 162 deaf children (76 girls and 86 boys, 3-15 years old, mean age 10.5 +/- 2.8 years) who attend the Regional School Centre for Deaf Children in Katowice. The data in our analysis was obtained from case histories (school r…

Ophthalmologic screening of deaf students in Oregon.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of Usher's syndrome and other ocular disease in students receiving special education services for the deaf in Oregon and to assess the amount of existing ophthalmologic surveillance of this population. A special emphasis was placed on screening for Usher's syndrome. METHODS: From 1980-1990, a prospective two-center visual screening program of 231 deaf students in schools throughout Oregon was conducted using an ophthalmic questionnaire, complete eye examinations, and electroretinography. Students were between the ages of 10 and 21 years and participated on

Personality study in profoundly deaf adults.

The difference with which the pre-lingual and post-lingual profoundly deaf confront their deafness is evident: the reticence of many pre-lingual deaf persons when faced with technological advances and genetic investigations is not present among the post-lingual deaf. This article looks at this difference from the person as a whole, and aims to carry out a comparative study of the personalities of both groups and of the non-deaf. To this end, three samples were taken (one of pre-lingual deaf persons, one of post-lingual deaf persons and a third of non-deaf persons) and the Mini-Mult personality…

[Etiology of moderate and profound deafness in childhood].

UNLABELLED: The present study sought to determine the etiology of bilateral profound hearing losses in children living in Germany. Additiona … g disorder could be determined in 218 of the children. Eighty-two children suffered from hereditary deafness and 136 from acquired hearing losses. The etiology could not be determined in 96 children. Hereditary causes included 34 children with mendelian autosomal dominant losses, 46 with autosomal recessive losses and two children with genetic but non-mend …

Outcome of sudden deafness with and without vertigo.

The outcome of unilateral sudden deafness with and without vertigo was evaluated according to the severity of the initial hearing loss, the shape of the audiogram, and other variables. The subjects for this investigation were 1313 patients who had presented to the authors' university hospital from 1972 to 1990 within 2 weeks of the onset of hearing loss. Thirty percent of the patients had accompanying vertigo. Vertigo occurred frequently in patients with severe hearing loss in the high-tone frequencies. Hearing recovery of high-tone frequencies was worse in patients with vertigo than in those …

[A case of Huntington's disease with congenital deafness].

A 27-year-old man with Huntington's disease (HD) and congenital deafness (CD) due to anomaly of the middle ear and inner ear was reported. His paternal family contained four members with CD and at least five members with HD including a pathologically confirmed case. Two members had both disorders. The maternal side had two members with CD but none with HD. The patient's physical and mental development was normal expect for deafness. His performance IQ tested at the age of 13 with WISC was 116. Since the age of 20, he showed gradual character changes, fits of violence, and tendency of exhibitio…

The deafness of Beethoven: an audiologic and medical overview.

The hearing loss of Ludwig von Beethoven has fascinated physicians, audiologists, and musicologists for almost 200 years. In this review of the literature, the features, treatment, and differential diagnosis of the composer's malady are discussed. An original series of hypothetical audiograms and actual photomicrographs depicting cochlear otosclerosis and Paget's disease are also provided. The author concludes with the majority of otologists that cochlear otosclerosis is the most likely diagnosis for the hearing loss. In addition, a summary of Beethoven's complicated medical history and result

Sudden deafness in a patient with temporal arteritis.

A patient with anemia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate presented with sudden hearing loss. The diagnosis of temporal arteritis was verified by temporal biopsy. Initiation of corticosteroid therapy reversed the disease manifestations and within a short period improved the patient's hearing.

The central nervous system in deaf adolescents.

Studies were made on 100 pupils, recruited from occupational rehabilitation schools for the deaf in Kraków. They underwent general medical as well as specialist examinations. Deafness was found up to the age of 3 years in 75% of those examined. In 30% of the subjects, their vestibular system was paralysed, ophthalmological disorders were found in 95% of cases, neurological disturbances in 15% and pathological changes of the central nervous system in 65% of cases were recorded by EEG. We did not look for evidence that deafness causes anatomical changes in the central nervous system, but the dis…

Some effects of deafness on the generation of voice.

Glottal volume-velocity waveform data were collected from twenty male and female hearing-impaired adolescents by means of a reflectionless tube. The subjects each provided samples of phonation in normal- and soft-voice modes and in a three-syllable word with primary stress on the medial syllable. Analysis of the data, in comparison with characteristics of phonation produced by normally hearing subjects, indicates that deafness affects primarily the time-varying characteristics of the glottal source. Among the hearing-impaired subjects, the following abnormalities were noted; diplophonia and cr…

Aetiology of deafness in white children in the Cape.

Two-hundred and forty White children attending special schools for the deaf have been investigated by clinical, genetic and laboratory methods in order to determine determine the aetiology of their hearing disability of these, 36% had a genetic basis for their deafness, while in a further 34% an acquired lesion was incriminated. The most important determinants of acquired deafness were maternal rubella, neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and meningo-encephalitis. The prevention of childhood deafness is primarily dependent upon recognition of the underlying causative factor.
