Clinical response of edentulous people treated with mini dental implants in nine dental practices.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse implant survival, prosthetic aftercare and quality of life (QoL) after stabilisation of complete dentures with mini-implants. BACKGROUND: Many edentulous patients refuse implant therapy due to the expenses and fear of surgery. Studies on minimally invasive and low-cost mini-implants remain rare. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 133 participating patients from nine private practices were evaluated via patient records, questionnaires and clinical examinations. Complications, maintenance, QoL questions and the German short version of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-

Relationships between activity of daily living, and oral cavity care and the number of oral cavity microorganisms in patients with cerebrovascular diseases.

We examined the relationships among the activity of daily living (ADL), oral cavity care, and the number of oral cavity microorganisms in 40 patients with cerebrovascular diseases (CVD). The CVD patients were classified into 4 groups, I, II, III and IV based on their ADL and the method used for oral cavity care. The ADL was highest in group I and lowest in group III. Only the patients of only group III could not eat by themselves and were receiving naso-esophageal feeding. Oral cavity care was performed by the patients themselves in groups I and IV, but was performed by caregivers in groups II

Clinical observations of noncoping overdenture abutments protected by tannin-fluoride preparation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The exposed dentin of overdenture abutments can lead to caries. Therefore chemical protection is needed to prevent caries. Considering that dentin contains both organic and inorganic components, reinforcement of both components should give reasonable results. Tannin-fluoride preparation strengthens both the organic and inorganic components of teeth. PURPOSE: This study examined whether the tannin-fluoride preparation protects noncoping abutments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-one subjects aged 36 to 86 years participated in the clinical trial. A trial autopolymerizing re

Antibiofilm Activity of 3D-Printed Nanocomposite Resin: Impact of ZrO2 Nanoparticles.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly used material, as it is biocompatible and relatively cheap. However, its mechanical properties and weak antibiofilm activity are major concerns. With the development of new technology, 3D-printed resins are emerging as replacements for PMMA. Few studies have investigated the antibiofilm activity of 3D-printed resins. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm activity and surface roughness of a 3D-printed denture base resin modified with different concentrations of zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs). A total of 60 resin dis

Evaluation of Different Preosteotomy Determinants as Affecting the Success of Implant Therapy: A "CBCT"-based Clinical Study.

AIM: The success of implant therapy is of greatest concern for clinicians because a minor negligence can lead to ultimate failure of treatment. However, comprehensive and precise treatment planning can ensure high success rate of implant therapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an innovation that allows clinicians to explore all related factors in details. This study was conducted to evaluate different preosteotomy determinants as affecting the success of implant therapy in the maxillary anterior region using CBCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 98 partially or com

Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM)-Assisted Telescopic Overdenture for a Post-mucormycosis Maxillary Defect: A Case Report.

Post-COVID-19 mucormycosis may result in acquired maxillary defects that compromise mastication, speech, facial support, and separation between the oral cavity and sinonasal spaces. Rehabilitation becomes particularly challenging when the defect is associated with persistent oroantral communication and nasal regurgitation. This clinical report describes the prosthodontic rehabilitation of a 66-year-old man with an Aramany Class II right posterior maxillary defect following mucormycosis. Teeth 11, 12, and 17 were selected as strategic abutments. A staged approach was followed, beginning with a

Targeting the Candida albicans agglutinin-like sequence 3 adhesin to disrupt oral polymicrobial bacterial-fungal biofilms: mechanisms and therapeutic strategies.

Oral polymicrobial biofilms formed between Candida albicans and bacterial pathogens underlie early childhood caries, denture stomatitis, periodontal disease, and oropharyngeal candidiasis, infections that conventional antimicrobials consistently fail to eradicate. The agglutinin-like sequence 3 (Als3) protein is a GPI-anchored hypha-specific adhesin that serves as the principal molecular scaffold for interkingdom co-aggregation in these biofilms. This review examines the molecular architecture and domain organization of Als3, including the N-terminal peptide-binding cavity (PBC) and the amyloi

Association Between Oral Health Status and Survival Time in Terminally Ill Cancer Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with terminal cancer often experience various oral problems. Whether oral health status is associated with the survival of terminally ill cancer patients receiving palliative care remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 59 Korean patients with terminal cancer receiving palliative care, including their oral health status, using a modified Korean version of the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). Patients were categorized into "Good," "Moderate," or "Poor" groups based on OHAT scores. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare the median survival time, and the

Synchronous Reconstruction of the Jaw Using a "One and a Half"-Barrel Fibular Bone Graft for Ossifying Fibroma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma is one of the common benign tumors that affect the appearance and functions of the jaw. Ossifying fibroma may exhibit a wide range of biological behaviors, leading to deformities involving the jaw and other secondary facial deformities. Hence, to improve the function of the jaw and the patient's general facial appearance (bearing in mind each patient's facial shape and, or appearance), the authors thus, however, used a ''one and a half"-barrel fibular bone graft to achieve the ideal height and radian of the bone graft. CASE PRESENTATION: Between July 2017 and Jan

Spontaneous passage of accidentally ingested metallic nail in an adult: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body ingestion is most common in children, as well as adults with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric problems. The most commonly swallowed foreign bodies in adults include fish bones, chicken bones, toothpicks, and dentures. Sharp and elongated ones are the most typical causes of gastrointestinal perforation among the aforementioned. In about 1% of cases, foreign bodies are known to remain lodged within the bowel and cause luminal erosion and perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male construction laborer presented to the Emergency Surgical Unit of

The Effects of Nutraceuticals and Herbal Medicine on Candida albicans in Oral Candidiasis: A Comprehensive Review.

Candida albicans is part of the healthy flora in the oral cavity. It can also cause opportunistic infection, which can be deleterious. The most typical type of chronic oral candidiasis is denture stomatitis, and C. albicans is identified as the most crucial organism in this situation. Due to the development of the resistant form of candida, using conventional drugs can sometimes be ineffective. Herbs and naturally imitative bioactive compounds could become a new source for antimycotic therapy. Several review studies suggest that herbal medicine and natural bioactive compounds have antibacteria

Histatin 5 variant reduces Candida albicans biofilm viability and inhibits biofilm formation.

Candida albicans is a commensal organism and opportunistic pathogen that can form biofilms that colonize surfaces of medical devices, such as implants, catheters, and dentures. Compared to planktonic C. albicans cells, cells in biofilms exhibit increased resistance to treatment. Histatin 5 (Hst-5) is an antimicrobial peptide that is natively secreted by human salivary glands and has strong antifungal activity against C. albicans. However, C. albicans produces secreted aspartic proteases (Saps) that can cleave and inactivate Hst-5, limiting its antifungal properties. We previously showed that r

Maxillary distomolars: case reports, differential diagnosis and literature review.

Supernumerary teeth can be found anywhere in the oral cavity, during deciduous or permanent dentition, in males and females. They are rare, owned to various genetic or environmental factors and usually impacted. This article first reports three cases of young adult patients coming to the office for other reasons than their maxillary distomolars and without any pathology caused by them. The decision of keeping or removing these teeth was made based on other associated factors. The fourth case is one of a 40-year-old partially edentulous male patient, also with a good general health and no other
