The present study explored changes in mental health and functional status from pregnancy to 2 months postpartum in a sample of 106 childbearing immigrant women. Three sets of variables were examined in relation to postpartum depressive symptomatology: (1) prenatal depression, worries, and somatic symptoms; (2) social relationships (marital quality and social support), and (3) factors related to migration (premigration stress and length of stay in the host country). We found that 37.7% of the women in this community sample scored above the cutpoint of 12 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Sc

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 17% of women globally and is predicted by prior mental illness and socioeconomic disadvantage. Emerging evidence suggests that negative bias in the cognitive processing of infant cues and heightened reactivity to infant distress during pregnancy contribute to PPD risk and may thus represent a treatment target. This randomized controlled trial examined whether prenatal affective cognitive training (PACT) reduces PPD risk by modulating negative biases in pregnant women at heightened risk. Of 280 women assessed, 147 at heightened risk were randomi

BACKGROUND: Maternal bonding difficulties are an important yet under-recognized aspect of perinatal mental health, influencing both maternal well-being and child development. Although studies have examined postpartum depression and bonding impairment, few have investigated their longitudinal relationship within general pediatric settings in Japan.
METHODS: This single-center observational study analyzed data from 512 mother-infant dyads following delivery at a general hospital in Fukuoka, Japan. Maternal depressive symptoms and bonding were assessed at five days and one, two, and three months

BACKGROUND: Postpartum women frequently experience depression, anxiety, stress, and infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviours, adversely affecting maternal psychological adjustment and well-being. Nonattachment is a potentially protective psychological construct associated with lower psychological distress and greater well-being, however; evidence on its relationship with postpartum psychological symptoms is limited.
AIM: This study aimed to examine the associations between nonattachment and infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviours, depression, anxiety, and stress among p

BACKGROUND: Despite its serious consequences, there is still a limited body of literature on suicidal ideation during the perinatal period, particularly among women with postpartum depression.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation in women with postpartum depression, to identify associated risk and protective factors, and to explore moderating variables in the relationship between suicidal ideation and postpartum depression.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 91 Spanish postpartum women, recruited via social media and midwives. All p

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological treatment for postpartum depression (PPD) have mainly involved conventional antidepressants, RCTs have also evaluated rapid-acting glutamatergic agents, neuroactive steroids, hormonal therapies, and botanical preparations. An updated comparative synthesis of these treatments is therefore needed.
OBJECTIVES: To synthesize RCT evidence and compare the efficacy, response, remission, acceptability, and safety of pharmacological interventions for PPD.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed risk of bias. A frequentist rando

Early identification of postpartum depression and anxiety is critical for enabling timely preventive interventions. Although antenatal self-report measures are strong and widely used predictors of postpartum mental health outcomes, it remains unclear whether physiological markers such as heart rate variability (HRV) provide incremental predictive value beyond established psychological assessments, particularly when measured at different stages of pregnancy. This study investigated whether HRV indices, measured during early and late pregnancy, before and after a mild cognitive-emotional stresso

Background and objective Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 13-19% of postpartum individuals and is one of the most prevalent complications of pregnancy, with significant consequences for maternal and child well-being. Research suggests that maternal age, ethnic minority status, and a history of depression are predictors of PPD. Nearly one-third of substance users also experience PPD, yet it is unclear how age, race/ethnicity, and mental health history predict PPD in this already at-risk population. This study aimed to examine the impact of age, race/ethnicity, and depression history on the d

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects both parents, yet its association with multiple screen addiction (MSA) remains under-researched, particularly within family systems. To address this gap using a couple-based perspective, this study evaluated the relationship between PPD and MSA in 83 mother-father dyads recruited from a primary care setting in Türkiye. Participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Multiple Screen Addiction Scale (MSAS). Results indicated that mothers had higher PPD scores, while fathers exhibited higher MSA levels. Significant positive correlations

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects a significant proportion of women and can impair interpersonal functioning. Interpersonal difficulties may both contribute to and result from PPD, highlighting the importance of interventions targeting interpersonal interactions.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the effect of interpersonal psychotherapy on postpartum depression symptoms.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to October 2025. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Libr

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding difficulty, particularly pain and mastitis, has been consistently associated with an increased risk of postpartum depression (PPD). Emerging evidence suggests that systemic inflammation may mediate this relationship, but the extent and consistency of this pathway remain unclear. The study objective is to systematically review observational studies examining the role of inflammatory biomarkers (IL-6, CRP, TNF-α, and IL-1β) in the association between breastfeeding difficulty (pain, mastitis, or cessation) and postpartum depressive symptoms.
METHODOLOGY: Following the M

The postpartum period has witnessed increasing rates of depression and anxiety, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, with these conditions often co-occurring and being exacerbated by the lingering effects of long COVID. Traditional interventions, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and yoga, have demonstrated effectiveness in alleviating these symptoms. However, the limitations of in-person sessions, especially in the context of pandemic-related restrictions, highlight the need for accessible, innovative approaches. Integrating Virtual Reality (VR) technology wit

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment increases the risk for mental disorders, including postpartum depression (PPD). Outside the peripartum period, attenuated long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation and perceived chronic stress are discussed as potential mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of childhood maltreatment. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) enables the detection of long-term changes in HPA axis regulation. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of HCC in linking childhood maltreatment with symptoms of PPD.
METHODS: We measured childhood maltreatment

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major maternal health concern in Malaysia, impacting both maternal well-being and infant development. Despite the availability of several validated screening tools, concerns remain about their cultural appropriateness and diagnostic accuracy in Malaysia's multiethnic context. This narrative review critically evaluates the psychometric properties, contextual relevance, and clinical limitations of PPD screening tools used in Malaysian healthcare. The objective is to assess whether current instruments sufficiently detect PPD in Malaysian women and explore the rati

The objective of this study was to investigate differences in the rates of postpartum depression (PPD) among patients with epilepsy treated with either lamotrigine (LTG) or levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapy, two commonly prescribed anti-seizure medications (ASMs) during pregnancy, with differential effects on mood. This is an observational study of 84 pregnancies monitored at Brigham and Women's Hospital Epilepsy-Obstetrics clinics between January 2018 and June 2022. Clinical information on patient demographics, medical history, seizure types and frequency, and postpartum mood was collected. PPD

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and serious mental disorder after childbirth, imposing a heavy burden on mothers, infants, and families. Abnormalities in the tryptophan-kynurenine (TRP-KYN) metabolic pathway are considered to be involved in its pathogenesis, but the role of quinolinic acid phosphoribosyltransferase (QPRT), a key downstream enzyme in this pathway, remains unclear. This study aims to explore the association between PPD in women undergoing cesarean section and QPRT gene polymorphisms, as well as other risk factors for PPD.
METHODS: A candidate gene associatio

Background Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern globally characterized by a spectrum of mood disturbances ranging from mild mood swings to severe depressive episodes initiating within four weeks post childbirth and potentially persisting up to 12 months. Besides affecting the mother, it also affects the mental health and development of the babies born to affected mothers. Despite its considerable burden and potential adverse effects on both maternal and child well-being, PPD often goes undetected and untreated. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was con
