Role of keratinocytes in allergic contact dermatitis.

Although once thought to play a purely structural role, there is increasing evidence that keratinocytes are actively involved in epidermal immune responses, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). In vitro studies demonstrate that both urushiol and nickel sulphate induce cytokine production in cultured keratinocytes including molecules responsible for endothelial cell activation and lymphocyte chemotaxis and adhesion. In vivo, these same molecules are expressed in experimentally induced patch test reactions to a variety of allergens. Furthermore, such expression precedes the onset of the

Review of contact dermatitis for non-dermatologists.

Contact dermatitis is common. Occupational contact dermatitis is one of the commonest occupational diseases. Allergic contact dermatitis to topical medications is frequent. This article provides an update on the two main types of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. The role of patch testing in evaluating patients is discussed and guidelines for treatment are given. Clinical features, prognosis, risk factors, and prevention are discussed.

Experimental photoallergic contact dermatitis to bisphenol A.

A single clinical report describes photoallergic contact dermatitis to bisphenol A, with subsequent persistent light reactivity, in a group of eight outdoor workers. In a mouse model we have induced photoallergic contact dermatitis to bisphenol A; sites of photochallenge reactions flared when later tested with UVA alone. Attempts to induce photoallergy to bisphenol A in guinea pigs failed.

Naphthol AS as a cause of pigmented contact dermatitis.

Naphthol AS is a coupling agent of cotton dyeing. 2 elderly women with hyperpigmentation of the neck and limbs are described. Both felt itching on the neck, forearms, and lower extremities and noted hyperpigmentation a month later. Both had worn cotton flannel nightdresses in winter. Patch testing with cotton flannel and methanol extracts were positive, but after estraction with methanol, the residual flannel did not react. The methanol extracts of cotton flannel, were analysed. The patients were tested with 5 extracted components; Naphthol AS was found to be the causative agent.

Contact stomatitis and dermatitis to nickel and palladium.

17 subjects were tested epicutaneously with 22 materials, including Ni, Pd, Cr and Co. 5 subjects with a positive allergic skin reaction to Ni were tested with a pure metallic nickel plate 3 X 5 mm, which was attached to the buccal side of one lower premolar. These 5 subjects all developed local allergic contact stomatitis on the mucosa of the cheek adjacent to the metal plate. This was confirmed histologically. The same oral test with pure metallic palladium gave no reaction in subjects with a positive patch test. A control group gave no reactions to the metal plates. Allergic contact stomati

Allergic contact dermatitis to a colophony derivative.

5 patients developed acute allergic contact dermatitis to a wood rosin present in the adhesive of tapes used to approximate the edges of incisions. The exposure history consistently included application after an orthopedic procedure with subsequent occlusion under a cast for 3 weeks.

Contact dermatitis in a spinal injuries centre.

A routine patch testing survey carried out on 122 patients in the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital showed that 40.1% of the patients studied gave positive patch test results to medicaments and other topical applications. The incidence of positive results was higher in patients with a history of pressure sores (45.1%) than in those who had never had sores (33.3%). The significance of these results is discussed.

Contact Dermatitis Associated With Nail Care Products: Retrospective Analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data, 2001-2016.

BACKGROUND: Ingredients in nail care products may lead to allergic and/or irritant contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to determine frequency of contact dermatitis associated with nail care products, characterize associated body sites, and describe causative allergens. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted with the North American Contact Dermatitis Group data between 2001 and 2016. RESULTS: Of the 38,775 patients tested, 769 (2.0%) had: 1) more than 1 allergic patch test reaction associated with a nail care product (n = 746), 2) irritant contact dermatitis a

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers/cosmetologists: retrospective analysis of north american contact dermatitis group data, 1994 to 2010.

BACKGROUND: European studies document that occupational contact dermatitis (CD) is common in hairdressers, but studies from North America are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of occupational CD among North American hairdressers/cosmetologists (HD/CS) and to characterize responsible allergens and irritants as well as their sources. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of patients patch tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group between 1994 and 2010 was conducted. RESULTS: Of 35,842 patients, 432 (1.2%) were HD/CS. Significantly, mos

Contact dermatitis associated with food: retrospective cross-sectional analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group data, 2001-2004.

BACKGROUND: Allergic and irritant contact dermatitis to food is likely underreported. OBJECTIVES: To characterize relevant allergens and irritants associated with food in patients referred to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) for patch testing. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of cross-sectional data from the NACDG from 2001 to 2004. RESULTS: Of 10,061 patch-tested patients, 109 (1.1%) had a total of 122 reactions associated with food. Approximately two-thirds of patients (66%) were female, and one-third (36%) were atopic. The hands were the most common sites of dermatitis

Persistent light reaction associated with photoallergic contact dermatitis to musk ambrette and allergic contact dermatitis to fragrance mix.

A 57-year-old man suffering from persistent light reaction with photocontact allergy to musk ambrette and contact allergy to fragrance mix was evaluated. A lowered minimal erythema dose to UV-B (MED-UV-B) was seen. Reactions to long-wave UV-A and visible radiation were normal. A skin biopsy from one MED-UV-B, taken 24 h after irradiation, showed acute spongiotic dermatitis.

[Allergic contact dermatitis due to Furacin®].

BACKGROUND: Allergic sensitization to topical antimicrobial treatments is a well-known problem. Furacin® is one of the most widely used in our environment. It contains 0.2% nitrofurazone and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a vehicle. CASE REPORT: 57-year-old male with no history of interest. He presented skin rash, blisters, and serous exudate 2-3 days after starting treatment with Furacin® (applied to an infected skin wound). Epicutaneous tests were performed with a true test battery, nitrofurantoin 1% in petrolatum, PEG15000 and 4000 1% in petrolatum, pure PEG 400, PEG monomethyl ether 350 1%
