[Contact allergy from cigarette smoking].

Usually, recorded cases of allergic contact dermatitis to tobacco are confined to occupational diseases and involve agricultural workers and those engaged in manufacturing or selling the products, all of whom are in contact with tobacco leaves. We have found three cases of contact dermatitis caused by cigarette smoke, which are not occupational disease. We do not know what offending agent is, but in one case the patient is allergic to perfume and this may be the factor responsible, since she smokes only flavoured cigarettes. In addition, we need to know whether the allergen only appears during

[Allergic contact eczema caused by rubber-containing substances simulating pustulosis palmaris].

The allergic contact dermatitis usually shows eczematous skin lesions. In few cases however pustular reactions can be observed. They are often caused by sensitization to metals and halogens. Herein we report a case occurring as pustulosis palmaris, that has been identified as an occupational allergic contact dermatitis to black rubber.

[Dermatology-allergy study in occupational medicine].

Dermatological investigation and study of allergy in occupational medicine requires careful interrogation and clinical examination, a study of professional gesture, patch tests and other tests to research a possible contact allergen, and open tests and prick tests if a contact urticaria is suspected. Tests have to be interpreted with clinical data and environment to try to establish their relevance. This investigation will sometimes result on a possible change of post or occupation, and declaration of occupational disease.

Occupational reactions to foods.

The spectrum of occupational diseases most commonly seen in the food industry includes occupational asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Occupational asthma represents between 3% and 20% of all asthma cases and is the most common form of occupational lung disease. Occupational skin diseases may represent between 10% and 15% of all occupational diseases, and they have significant economic impact. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis affects the food industry, with farmer's lung representing a common form of the disease. Each of these diseases may have serious

A 6-month follow-up study of 1048 patients diagnosed with an occupational skin disease.

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) often have considerable medical and occupational consequences. Previous data on prognostic factors have been derived from studies with fairly small sample sizes. OBJECTIVES: To determine the medical and occupational outcome in 1048 patients diagnosed with OSD at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and to identify the prognostic risk factors for the continuation of OSD. METHODS: Patients examined in 1994-2001 filled out a follow-up questionnaire 6 months after the diagnosis. Data on atopy, contact allergies, and occupation were analysed.

The Use of an Over-the-Counter Hand Cream With Sweet Almond Oil for the Treatment of Hand Dermatitis.

Hand dermatitis is estimated to affect greater than 15% of the general population. Childhood eczema, frequent hand washing, and occupational exposure to chemicals are predisposing factors. Hand dermatitis treatment involves both prevention of outbreaks and treatment of active disease. Moisturizers are essential to protect the skin from the environment, enhance hydration, and repair the skin barrier. They have been shown in large studies to prevent occupational related breakouts. Natural oils are commonly used in moisturizers for their moisturizing and emollient properties. Sweet almond oil is

Sensitization to para-tertiary-butylphenolformaldehyde resin.

BACKGROUND: Phenolformaldehyde resins, especially the para-tertiary-butylphenolformaldehyde resin (PTBP-FR), are widely used in industry and in numerous materials of everyday use, such as glues, adhesives, or inks. They can cause many occupational and nonoccupational cases of dermatitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with positive patch test results to PTBP-FR were selected for this study. They were patch-tested with a series of chemically related compounds and cross-reactions were noted. RESULTS: Phenolformaldehyde resin (PF-R) was frequently positive (65.8%), whereas other compo

[Skin tests in chronic hand dermatitis].

Chronic hand dermatitis is often multifactorial but allergic causes are frequent and can complicate atopic dermatitis or irritant dermatitis. The management of patients affected by hand dermatitis includes detailed interrogation and a complete examination of the skin. Allergologic tests must be systematically realized if examination is suggestive of contact dermatitis or protein contact dermatitis, if an occupational origin is suspected but also in all patients in which treatment is ineffective. Skin tests include patch tests with the European standard series, specialized or additional series

Patch tests with occupational contactants in nurses, doctors and dentists.

In this study, 333 nurses, 92 dentists and 167 doctors were investigated. Most positive patch tests obtained were unrelated to occupation. Nurses were most often sensitized to penicillins and, of the disinfectants, formaldehyde was the commonest cause of occupational dermatitis. Among dentists, the most common occupational allergens were eugenol and mercuric chloride. Among surgeons, as compared with physicians, there were frequent reactions to mercuric chloride and balsam of Peru, and a higher number of positive patch tests with other contactants. Among those sensitized to chromium, 4 doctors

Return to Work for Nurses With Hand Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin disease is common in healthcare workers. If the healthcare worker develops moderate to severe dermatitis, return to work (RTW) may be challenging. OBJECTIVES: The study objectives were to review the impact of an RTW program on the work status of nurses with occupational hand dermatitis and to identify successful intervention methods and strategies. METHODS: Nurses who received RTW services at a tertiary occupational medicine clinic were identified, and information related to their diagnosis and RTW was abstracted from their charts. RESULTS: Eighteen nurses with

Skin protection in the healthcare setting.

Professions of the healthcare setting are at high risk for occupational skin diseases. Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis of the hands frequently occurs, whereas contact urticaria and hospital-acquired infections are less common. Wet work and irritant exposure are frequent due to hand hygiene which is indispensable with regard to prevention of crossinfections. In the healthcare setting, protection gloves are frequently used alternating with protection creams. Since the use of occlusive protection gloves has adversary effects on the skin barrier, use times have to be limited. Furthermore,

Hand eczema in metalworker trainees--an analysis of risk factors.

The present study, as part of PROMETES (Swiss Prospective Metal Worker Eczema Study), was performed to examine risk factors for the development of occupational hand dermatitis in metal-worker trainees. Since this disease is very common, a high standard of preventive measures is necessary, especially for persons with an endogenous disposition for the development of eczema, e.g., atopics. Within the cohort of 201 healthy young men, 47 (23%) showed at least mild signs of hand eczema at 1 point of the 2.5 year observation period. Various occupational and domestic exposures, skin protection behavio

Hand eczema and occupational contact allergies in healthcare workers with a focus on rubber additives.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) in healthcare workers (HCWs) is common. Besides wet work, healthcare work also implies exposure to contact allergens. OBJECTIVES: To assess HE and contact allergy related to occupational exposures in HCWs. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 311 HCWs with HE within the preceding 12 months and a control group of 114 HCWs without HE were investigated with the baseline series and a special patch test series based on substances found in the gloves, soaps, alcoholic hand disinfectants and hand creams provided at the hospitals. RESULTS: Contact allergy to rubber addi

Contact dermatitis: epidemiology and frequent sensitizers to cosmetics.

Contact dermatitis is defined as a pattern of inflammatory response that may occur as a result of contact with external factors. The two most common causes are irritants and allergens. Very few reliable data on prevalence and incidence of contact dermatitis exist, and data from the few studies that have been carried out cannot be compared because of differences in methodology. Occupational contact dermatitis constitutes up to 30% of all occupational diseases for which compensation is payable and affects sufferers' home and social lives as well as their working lives. Patients can be advised ab

Dermatoses among poultry workers: "chicken poison disease".

To investigate the causes of skin eruptions affecting poultry workers, we reviewed our medical records and surveyed a southcentral Pennsylvania poultry processing plant. Examination of the records of routine patch test clinic patients seen from January, 1981, to July, 1982, revealed three poultry workers with allergic contact dermatitis and one with irritant contact dermatitis. We then examined one hundred fifty workers at a poultry processing plant, noting the presence of occupational dermatoses, with special interest in the occurrence of contact dermatitis. We found thirteen dermatoses in ni
