In their early stages, some dermatoses of the scalp such as psoriasis seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis and discoid lupus erythematosus are often hardly noticeable to others. However, the eruptions are occasionally severe and extensive. Reaching an adequate diagnosis is of utmost impor¬tance for an adequate healthcare.

Malassezia furfur is a yeast known as the etiological agent of seborrheic dermatitis. We evaluated the action of five different antimicrobials (amphotericin B, chloramphenicol, ketoconazole, fluconazole, and nystatin) on inhibiting biofilm formation and removing biofilm already formed by M. furfur. The assays were carried out using the microdilution method, and scanning electron microscopy images were used to analyze the biofilm structure. According to the results obtained, the percentage of inhibition was higher for chloramphenicol, followed by ketoconazole, nystatin, and amphotericin B. Rega

Eleven adult patients (7 males, 4 females) were found to be infected with Microsporum canis. There was involvement of the scalp in three patients: in one male and one female there were kerion-like lesions and in one male the lesions resembled seborrheic dermatitis. There were three cases of tinea barbae, males aged 28, 65 and 82 years, in the first resembling an infected single lesion of granuloma annulare, the second with a kerion-like lesion and the third with an abscess-like tumor. There were five patients with lesions in glabrous areas: one male with a lesion of the palm resembling erythem

Malassezia species of lipophilic yeasts account for most fungal microbiota. Although they colonize healthy skin, they are also associated with several skin diseases, including pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, Malassezia folliculitis, and atopic dermatitis. To date, 14 members of the Malassezia genus have been identified. Of these, both M. globosa and M. restricta predominate, regardless of skin-disease type. Comprehensive analysis of fungal microbiota in the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis using an rRNA clone library method revealed that fungal microbiota cluster according

A quantitative microbiological survey of multiple sites in the diaper area in 40 normal infants and 100 infants with various forms of diaper dermatitis showed (1) no significant differences between normal infants and those with common chafing form of diaper dermatitis except for a low number of Staphylococcus aureus organisms in 50% of those with chafing dermatitis compared to no S aureus in normals; (2) S aureus occurred in high numbers in every case of atopic dermatitis and was frequently found at much lower levels in psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and chafing dermatitis; (3) Candida albi

Atopic is the most common of the dermatitides seen in infancy and childhood, but there are numerous other diseases that can mimic the skin findings. These include seborrheic dermatitis, immunodeficiency, and psoriasis in infancy; scabies, tinea corporis infection, perioral, nummular, contact, and molluscum dermatitis in childhood. It is sometimes extremely difficult to differentiate between ichthyosis and AD, and it is also important to differentiate AD from erythrodermic conditions including acrodermatitis enteropathica, biotin deficiency, and Netherton syndrome. A rare condition in children

Topical tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream represent the first members of a new class of medications. Topical immunomodulators have been developed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Their superb safety profiles and excellent efficacy as anti-inflammatory agents make them attractive candidates to treat a host of other skin disorders. This article reviews published experiences that use them for psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, lichen planus, pyoderma gangrenosum and other diseases. Possible modifications to these compounds and novel untested applications are discussed.

Scaling and/or crusting are common clinical findings associated with equine skin diseases. Scaling and crusting may be associated with pruritic or nonpruritic dermatoses. This article focuses on those conditions that are usually nonpruritic in horses. They include the infectious dermatoses, the keratinization/seborrheic disorders, photosensitization, and the immunologic/inflammatory disorders, including pemphigus foliaceus, equine exfoliative eosinophilic dermatitis and stomatitis, and equine histiocytic dermatitis (sarcoidosis). Clinical signs that help differentiate the various disorders are

Interferon-gamma-induced protein 10 is a 10-kd protein produced by human keratinocytes following an exposure to interferon gamma. Keratinocytes within psoriatic plaques and within delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions have been shown to stain strongly with an affinity-purified rabbit antibody prepared against interferon-gamma-induced protein 10, suggesting a possible role for interferon gamma in the production of the lesions. A psoriasiform eruption has been seen in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Its severity appears to correlate with the degree of immunodeficiency

Parthenium hysterophorus and Tanacetum parthenium, members of the Compositae family, are important causes of allergic contact dermatitis due to plants. Parthenium dermatitis is a major problem in India and Australia. Parthenium hysterophorus causes a spectrum of clinical patterns. Parthenium dermatitis, in its classical form known as airborne contact dermatitis, primarily affects the exposed areas and the flexures. Other clinical patterns are a seborrheic pattern, widespread dermatitis, and exfoliative dermatitis. The trend of the clinical pattern is changing. The classic airborne contact derm

OBJECTIVE: Down's syndrome is the most frequent chromosomal anomaly that can affect a multiple organ systems, including skin. In this study, we compared the frequency of mucocutaneous disorders in children with Down's syndrome with normal children.
METHODS: We recruited fifty children with Down's syndrome and 50 healthy children as a control in our study. Mucocutaneous abnormalities were examined in both groups.
FUNDINGS: Of 50 patients, 22 were girls and 28 were boys. The skin findings such as xerosis and Mongolian spots were the most frequently seen in the patients with Down's syndrome. Se

Two patients with biotinidase deficiency had diagnoses of infantile spasms made at 1 month of age. Biotinidase deficiency may be seen early in the neonatal period without the characteristic findings such as alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis. This diagnosis should be considered in patients with infantile spasms.

We present two cases of keratosis lichenoides striata. Both patients have the typical features of the disease: linear verrucous formations on the limbs, and a seborrheic--like dermatitis. The oral mucosa was involved, showing erythematous patches and papules. A treatment by etretinate did not bring a significant improvement.

Malassezia species are associated with pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. Presently, eleven species are accepted in the genus Malassezia. Of these, M. globosa and M. restricta colonize the skin surface in atopic dermatitis patients, suggesting that they play a significant role in exacerbating the condition. The two species have different genotypes in the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the rRNA gene, which correspond to patients and healthy individuals. In addition, the antifungal susceptibilities of the genotypic strains to itraconazole and ketocona

Dandruff is a common complaint and is suffered by as many as 50% of the population at some time during their life and cause significant discomfort. The condition is generally characterized by the presence of flakes on the scalp and in the hair, and by itch. The symptoms can vary, and the severity can range from mild scaling, similar to dry skin, to severe scaling. Its prevalence and severity is greatest in young men, with children and older individuals suffering less frequently. It is commonly aggravated by changes in humidity, trauma (e.g., scratching), seasonal changes, and emotional stress.
