OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the shave biopsy technique, which is a new surgical procedure for complete removal of longitudinal melanonychia. We evaluated the quality of the specimen submitted for pathological examination, assessed the postoperative outcome, and ascertained its indication between the other types of matrix biopsies.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective study performed at the dermatologic departments of the Universities of Liège and Brussels, Belgium, of 30 patients with longitudinal or total melanonychia.

OBJECTIVE: This is a clinical study of our experience using pedicle perforator flaps to cover skin defects in the middle and distal segment of the leg.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS/INTERVENTION: Twenty-four patients underwent treatment of a skin defect in the middle or distal segment of the leg by means of pedicled flaps based on perforating arteries. The perforating arteries were located before the operation by means of echo-Doppler examination. The flaps were planned in propeller fashion (21 cases) and as advancement (three cases).

Re-surfacing after a total hand degloving injury is one of the most difficult management problems in hand surgery. We present one such case that was managed using three flaps for cover. The radial forearm flap is very thin and pliable, resulting in satisfactory coverage of first web space and the thumb remnant, and facilitates a mobile thumb. The groin-hypogastric flap covered the remnant fingers admirably. The patient had a good first web and could use the hand to lift objects and hold a pen to write legibly within 2 months of the injury.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of conjunctival hyperaemia and proptosis of the right eye.
METHODS: Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) was performed to reveal the size and position of a lesion of osseous density extending into the right orbit. The lesion was then excised using a right paranasal transcutaneous approach.

BACKGROUND: Optimal healing of the fascial layer is a necessary component of complete abdominal wall repair. The majority of acute wound healing studies have focused on the dermis. We designed a model of abdominal wall repair that, to our knowledge, for the first time simultaneously characterizes differences in the wound healing trajectories of the fascia and skin.
METHODS: Full-thickness dermal flaps were raised on the ventral abdominal walls of rats, and midline fascial celiotomies were completed. The dimensions of the flap were developed so as to have no detrimental effect on skin healing.

The coverage of this area is challenging according to the following points: the proximity of the distal interphalangeal joint, the thinness of the extensor apparatus and the vicinity of the nail.
