BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) is approved in the United States for the treatment of pediatric asthma and rhinitis; sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) does not have regulatory approval but is used in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Clinical trials of seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis use the mountain cedar (Juniperus ashei) season as the predominate model.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical trials of rhinoconjunctivitis using mountain cedar, to present analysis of pollen counts during 18 seasons, and to discuss the model.
METHODS: The medical literature was searched for clinical trials performed using mountain cedar either in or out of season. Pollen counts were recorded and analyzed for the duration of 18 seasons.

All patients with aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) can be desensitized to ASA. After achieving this state, patients can then take ASA daily without adverse effect. ASA desensitization can be maintained indefinitely as long as the patient takes ASA each day. Crossdesensitization with older NSAIDs also occurs. After ASA desensitization, patients can take daily ASA in order to treat their underlying respiratory disease. In our country approximately forty people die every year from anaphylaxis caused by hymenoptera stings. Causes and precipitating factors for systemic necrotizing angiitis (NA) with asthma were sought in 43 patients, focusing on a history of vaccination and desensitization. Mean age of patients was 43.2 years. Diagnosis was based on histopathologic findings in 25 patients, arteriography in 2, and clinical criteria in 16. A patient with ulcerative colitus developed fever, dyspnea, eosinophilia, and pulmonary infiltrates while taking sulfasalazine. The abnormalities resolved when the sulfasalazine was stopped but the colitus recurred. 13 children ranging in age from 1 to 13 years and 1 adult patient had positive patch tests to 2% AlCl3 in water. 13 of them had pruritic excoriated papules, 9 at sites of hyposensitization therapy with aluminium-bound pollen extracts, and 4 at sites of childhood immunization with an aluminium-bound vaccine (Di-Te-Pol). For the 1 adult patient, the positive patch test was not considered to be of current relevance. Aluminium is most likely to sensitize when present in preparations used for immunization.

Oral immunotherapy (IT) was evaluated in a pilot study in two centres in children aged 8-15 years with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. High doses (up to 20 X 10(6) BU monthly) of a defined freeze-dried birch pollen extract administered in enteric-coated gelatine capsules were given either daily for seven consecutive days every month or once weekly. Symptom scores, as assessed by sneezing, dripping and blockage of the nose, and redness, itching and swelling of the eyes, were significantly lower in treated patients compared to untreated, or placebo treated controls after 3 to 5 months of therapy.
