BACKGROUND: As a chronic inflammatory disease, ulcerative colitis (UC) is relevant to a rising risk of colorectal cancer. Dihydroberberine (DHBB), a natural occurring isoquinoline alkaloid with various bioactivities, was found in many plants including Coptis chinensis Franch. (Ranunculaceae), Phellodendron chinense Schneid. (Rutaceae), and Chelidonium majus L. (Papaveraceae). However, its protective effect on UC is sparsely dissected out.

SLC26A3 encodes a Cl-/HCO3- ion transporter that is also known as downregulated in adenoma (DRA) and is involved in HCO3-/mucus formation. BACKGROUND: Perioperative hemorrhage may depend on coagulation competence and this study evaluated the influence of coagulation competence on blood loss during cystectomy due to bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the peripheral hemodynamic effects in a skeletal muscle in vivo model of the four commercially available colloid solutions, 20% human albumin, 6% dextran-70, 6% hydroxyethyl starch 200/0.5 (HES), and 3.5% urea-linked gelatin.

Dextran 40 is used to improve the microcirculation after certain surgical procedures. We report a rare case of acute anuric renal failure in a healthy young adult after administration of dextran 40 to improve the microcirculation following ear-reattachment surgery. The renal failure was subsequently reversed by plasmapheresis and intensive care support. Although rare in the young and fit, the risk of developing acute anuric renal failure exists with administration of dextran 40 and appropriate monitoring is essential.

Adult respiratory distress syndrome occurred in a patient who had received dextran as a routine antithrombotic agent during and after free TRAM breast reconstruction. Although most patients who receive dextran have no adverse reaction, particularly after hapten inhibition by dextran 1 infusion, the serious nature of this complication in an elective operation calls into question the continuing routine use of dextran in microsurgery.
