Unicornuate Uterus With a Rudimentary Horn Adenomyoma, Ipsilateral Renal Agenesis, and Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis: A Case Report.

Congenital uterine malformations are often difficult to classify, and an incorrect label can carry over for years across successive clinical records. We describe a 39-year-old woman, gravida 1 para 1, referred for chronic pelvic pain and intermenstrual bleeding, whose uterus had previously been recorded as didelphys. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, with T2-weighted sequences in three planes, T1-weighted and fat-saturated sequences, diffusion-weighted imaging, and post-gadolinium imaging, instead demonstrated a unicornuate uterus with a left, cavitated, non-communicating functional rudimenta

Robotic approach for OHVIRA syndrome: case report of an early diagnosis in a prepubertal girl.

INTRODUCTION: OHVIRA (obstructed hemivagina with ipsilateral renal agenesis) syndrome, also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, is a rare congenital anomaly of the female urogenital tract characterized by uterus didelphys, an obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. It is typically diagnosed at puberty due to cyclic pelvic pain or hematocolpos. Early recognition in childhood is uncommon but may prevent serious complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 1-year-old girl in whom OHVIRA syndrome was incidentally identified during imaging performed for unrelated findings

Hand-foot-genital syndrome due to a duplication variant in the GC-rich region of HOXA13.

BACKGROUND: Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome (HFGS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a broad phenotypic spectrum. Variants in HOXA13 gene were associated with HFGS. To date, only twenty families with HFGS have been reported. However, the challenge in HFGS is the limited sample sizes and phenotypic heterogeneity. The advent of next-generation sequencing has permitted the identification of patients with HOXA13 variants who do not manifest with the full HFGS syndromic features. METHODS: Trio (parents-proband) Whole-exome sequence(WES) and whole-genome sequencing(WGS) was carried out

Diagnosis and treatment of müllerian malformations.

Anomalies in the müllerian ducts are congenital alterations with more prevalence than it is imagined, varying from 0.5 to 6.7% in the general population and up to 16.7% in women with recurrent miscarriage. The main findings are primary amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, endometriosis, sexual difficulties and low self-esteem. The major impact on the quality of life in women stricken by these problems justifies this study, whose objective is to analyze their most important aspects such as etiopathogeny, classification, diagnostic methods and proposed treatments. The research was performed on

Placental malperfusion as a possible mechanism of preterm birth in patients with Müllerian anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: Müllerian anomalies are associated with increased risk of miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and preterm birth. While a commonly implicated cause is restricted expansion of endometrial cavity, alternatively it could be due to abnormal placentation. We sought to examine clinical and histopathologic factors associated with preterm delivery in women with Müllerian anomalies. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and eleven singleton pregnancies in 85 women were analyzed retrospectively. There were 42 pregnancies with bicornaute, 24 with unicornuate, 24 with septate, 19 with didel

Novel clinical and molecular findings in Spanish patients with naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by developmental alterations and multiple basal cell carcinomas. Mutations in PTCH1, which encodes a membrane receptor for Sonic Hedgehog, are associated with the development of the disease. Most of them produce a truncated protein, which is unable to suppress Smoothened protein and continuously activates the downstream pathway. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize 22 unrelated Spanish patients with NBCCS, the largest cohort with Gorlin syndrome reported to date in Spain. METHODS: Genomi

New classification of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Uterus didelphys and blind hemivagina associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis are collectively known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS). In the literature, the syndrome often appears as a single case report or as a small series. In our study, we reviewed the characteristics of all HWWS patients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) and suggested a new classification for this syndrome because the clinical characteristics differed significantly between the completely and incompletely obstructed vaginal septum. This new classification allows for earlier diagnosi

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Presenting as an Incidental Retrovesical Cyst in an Infant: A Case Report.

Müllerian (paramesonephric) ducts are the primordial components of the female reproductive tract, and defects in their development can lead to a range of uterine anomalies, including hypoplasia, agenesis, and other structural abnormalities. Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is a rare variant of Müllerian duct anomalies characterized by uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. This syndrome is often diagnosed incidentally, typically presenting with symptoms related to urinary tract or reproductive system malformations. Early recognition is crucial to preve

Undiagnosed uterine anomalies revealed by breech on ultrasound prior to external cephalic version - A chance to take a closer look.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine anomalies (UA) occur in up to 6.7% of women. Breech is eight times more likely to occur with UA which may not be diagnosed prior to pregnancy and may only be found in the third trimester with breech. The objective of the study is to assess the prevalence of both already known and newly sonographically diagnosed UA in breech from 36 weeks of gestation and its impact on external cephalic version (ECV), delivery options and perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We recruited 469 women with breech at 36 weeks of gestation over a 2-year period at the Charité University Hospital, Berl

Ectopic endometriosis, menstruation, and acute appendicitis: A thought-provoking case.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ectopic endometrium in the appendix is rare. The relationships between ectopic endometrium in the alimentary tract and digestive symptoms and between digestive symptoms due to ectopic endometriosis and periodic menstruation are controversial. We herein describe the successful treatment of acute appendicitis that we suspect was caused by ectopic endometriosis and periodic menstruation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 38.9-year-old multipara with uterine didelphys developed lower abdominal pain during menstruation, and she was clinically diagnosed with acute appendicitis. S

New Consideration of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Diagnosed by Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES: As a rare malformation of the female reproductive system, Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) was categorized into 3 classifications. It was recommended recently that, on the basis of the past classification, cervicovaginal atresia without communicating uteri should be newly added as classification 4. The surgical intervention will differ by type. To better optimize patient counseling as well as the preoperative evaluation and planning, our objective was to describe the ultrasound characteristics of each type of HWWS, including the new type. METHODS: From January 1995 to Nove
