[Effects of a series of food substances on motor and emptying function of the gastric stump and diverting intestinal loop after stomach resection and truncal vagotomy].

Altogether 253 patients operated on for peptic ulcer were examined for the action of 30 foods on motor and evacuatory function of the gastric stump and efferent intestinal loop. 213 patients were subjected to gastric resection after Hofmeister-Finsterer and 40 patients to antrum resection and truncal vagotomy. Proceeding from the action on motor function of the gastric stump and efferent intestinal loop the foods were distributed into three groups: with a stimulation, inhibitory of weak effects on the function. Spina bifida and potatoes.

The results of a retrospective survey of the dietetic and other habits of the mothers of 83 children with spina bifida (mostly schoolchildren with meningomyelocele) were compared with 85 carefully matched controls. The survey was particularly concerned with the consumption of or contact with potatoes by the mothers. No significant differences were found in the amount of potatoes eaten as reported by the mothers (mean for spina bifida group 3.60 1b (1630 g), and for controls 3.98 1b (1800 g) per week). Of the seven other comparisons associated with potatoes only one (obtaining them from the chi

Unmet Needs in Nutritional Care in African Paediatric Oncology Units.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of children diagnosed with cancer in low- and middle-income countries are malnourished, which likely affects survival. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An online survey to paediatric oncology units (POUs) in Africa was done regarding nutritional assessment and care. RESULTS: Sixty-six surveys were received from POUs in 31 countries. Only 44.4% had a dedicated dietician for nutritional assessment and support; 29.6% undertook routine nutritional assessment during treatment. None reported defined criteria for nutritional intervention. Total parenteral nutrition was not available for

The Nutritional and Inflammatory Evaluation in Dialysis patients (NIED) study: overview of the NIED study and the role of dietitians.

The absolute majority of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients die within 5 years of commencing dialysis treatment, mostly because of cardiovascular (CV) disease. The strongest and most common correlates of death in MHD patients are not conventional CV risk factors, but markers of protein-energy malnutrition and inflammation, together also known as malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome (MICS). Paradoxically, classic risk factors such as obesity and hypercholesterolemia are associated with better survival in MHD patients. It has been hypothesized that this so-called reverse epidemiology

[Lists of food exchanges for use in phenylketonuria and maple-syrup urine disease].

Phenylketonuria (PKU) and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) are disorders of the amino acid metabolism. Treatment of PKU and MSUD, is based on the restriction of the involved amino acids. Diet must begin very early in life in order to prevent neurological sequelae. A wrong dietary produce central nervous system damage. The first clinical manifestations are unexplained failure to thrive, vomiting, feeding difficulties, lethargy, coma, acidosis and irritability. The most severe consequence is impaired mental development. The standard exchange foods list (EFL) used in outpatient clinics, is design

Food and nutrition skills of mentally retarded adults: assessment and needs.

Nutrition assessment showed that 48% of the mentally retarded adults in this study were obese, pointing to present and/or past energy imbalances (11,14). Approximately 43% of the clients were consuming less than 50% of the RDAs for one or more nutrients. Diets were most frequently low (less than 75% RDAs) in iron, vitamin A, and calcium. Other problems included difficulties in shopping, menu planning, and food preparation. Clients scored a mean of 53.2% on the nutrition knowledge test. This program has made great progress in developing its clients' food and nutrition skills. But the study show

Malnutrition and protein energy wasting are associated with severity and progression of pediatric chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Protein energy wasting (PEW), a state of deficient protein storage, is not well understood in children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to re-define PEW using pediatric malnutrition guidelines from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AND/ASPEN), and to describe the relationship between PEW, malnutrition, and kidney function. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of outpatients ≤ 20 years old with a diagnosis of CKD from January 1, 2013, to August 31, 2018. Malnutrition was diagnosed by a licens…
