The effects of high altitude ascent on splenic contraction and the diving response during voluntary apnoea.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What is the relative contribution of a putative tonic splenic contraction to the haematological acclimatization process during high altitude ascent in native lowlanders? What is the main finding and its importance? Spleen volume decreased by -14.3% (-15.2 ml) per 1000 m ascent, with an attenuated apnoea-induced [Hb] increase, attesting to a tonic splenic contraction during high altitude ascent. The [Hb]-enhancing function of splenic contraction may contribute to restoring oxygen content early in the acclimatization process at high altit

Diving and mental health: the potential benefits and risks from a survey of recreational scuba divers.

INTRODUCTION: Scuba diving is physically and cognitively demanding. Medical guidance regarding physical and mental health (MH) issues and related prescribed medication is often based on limited evidence. There is a paucity of data concerning diving with MH issues. This survey aimed to investigate the prevalence of MH issues and use of prescription medications among United Kingdom (UK) sport divers, and the rate of non-compliance with current guidance among divers suffering depression and anxiety. The positive effects of scuba diving on MH were also considered. METHODS: An anonymous online sur…

Prevalence of Pulmonary Bullae and Blebs in Postmortem CT Imaging With Potential Implications for Diving Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary bullae and blebs can result in a pneumothorax. Their prevalence in the normal population is currently unknown. Postmortem CT (PMCT) images from a forensic database were used to determine the prevalence of pulmonary bullae/blebs in the normal Dutch adult population and its consequence for diving medicine, as bullae and blebs are often considered a contraindication for diving. METHODS: Forensic PMCT scans of 130 adults were analyzed for the presence of bullae and/or blebs in a cross-section of the Dutch population without pulmonary disorders. The lungs had to be unharmed, …

Species-specific primers for the detection of lymphatic filariasis vectors: Mansonia bonneae and Mansonia dives.

Lymphatic filariasis remains a public health problem in some areas of Thailand and Southeast Asia. The nocturnally subperiodic and periodic form of brugian filariasis is transmitted by the Mansonia species. It is difficult to distinguish especially wild caught specimens between certain species due to morphological similarities. In the present study, species-specific primers were designed for amplification of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) markers to simplify the identification of two morphologically similar species: Ma. bonneae and Ma. dives by PCR detection method. The primer specificity

Diving into the world of alcohol teratogenesis: a review of zebrafish models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

The term fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to the entire suite of deleterious outcomes resulting from embryonic exposure to alcohol. Along with other reviews in this special issue, we provide insight into how animal models, specifically the zebrafish, have informed our understanding of FASD. We first provide a brief introduction to FASD. We discuss the zebrafish as a model organism and its strengths for alcohol research. We detail how zebrafish has been used to model some of the major defects present in FASD. These include behavioral defects, such as social behavior as well as lear

Periorbital emphysema after dive barotrauma without radiological evidence of paranasal sinus injury.

BACKGROUND: Scuba diving has increased in popularity since its invention in 1943, with over 21 million PADI registered members worldwide. Injuries to the paranasal sinuses caused by barotrauma are the second most common after injury to the middle ear. CASE REPORT: In this paper we present a case of unilateral periorbital surgical emphysema in a 23-yr-old male commercial scuba diver with minimal symptoms following an uneventful 13-ft (4-m) dive. The only symptoms experienced were pain and pressure over the right maxillary sinus and retrorbitally. Imaging with computed tomography showed no frac…

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in an 11-year-old boy after a shallow breath-hold dive.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is caused by pulmonary barotrauma due to transiently increased intra-alveolar and intra-bronchial pressure. The most frequent triggers of spontaneous pneumomediastinum in children are asthma and manoeuvres creating forced expiration. It has been rarely associated with breath-hold diving. Chest pain and dyspnoea are the main symptoms, and the diagnosis can be confirmed by chest X-ray. The treatment of choice is oxygen, analgesics and monitoring the patient. The recurrence rate is low. The main differential diagnoses of spontaneous pneumomediastinum are oesophageal …

Respiratory effects of a single dive to 50 meters in sport divers with asymptomatic respiratory atopy.

Increasing popularity of sports diving makes it likely that subjects with allergic respiratory diseases will be involved in diving with self contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba). The present study evaluated the effects of a single scuba-dive on pulmonary function in subjects with respiratory atopy. Specific airways conductance (sGaw), residual volume (RV), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), mid expiratory flow at 50% of FVC (MEF50), and transfer factor for carbon monoxide (TLCO) were measured in 9 sport divers with a history of hay fever and 9 ma…

The sigma-selective ligand NE-100 attenuates the effect of phencyclidine in a rat diving model.

1. Phencyclidine (PCP) reduces the latency of rats diving into a water-filled pool from a hidden platform, without stereotyped behavior. 2. The sigma-selective ligand, NE-100 (N,N-dipropyl-2-[4-methoxy-3-(2-phenylethoxy)phenyl]-ethyl-amine monohydrochloride), attenuates the effects of PCP in this procedure. 3. The serotonin2 (5-HT2) antagonist, ritanserin, and the sigma receptor ligands, 1-(cyclopropylmethyl)-4-[2'(4"-fluorophenyl)-2'-oxoethyl]- piperidine HBr (Dup734), 4-[2'-(4"-cyanophenyl)-2'-oxoethyl]-1- (cyclopropylmethyl)piperidine (XJ448), alpha-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-(5-fluoro-2-pyrimidiny…

Lectinhistochemical observations on the bronchial glands and the goblet cells of the airway epithelium of marine diving mammals.

Carbohydrate components were investigated in the bronchial glands and goblet cells of two species of seals with different diving habits (Weddell seal, Crabeater seal). Bouin-fixed tissue was incubated with various fluorescein-iso-thiocyanate-conjugated lectins (WGA, RCA I, PNA, PHA I, HPA, GSA I, DBA, Con A, LFA, SBA, UEA I), additionally PAS- and HID-reactions as well as Alcian Blue stains were applied. The two species differ in respect of their carbohydrate histochemistry, e.g., the PAS reaction gives only a faint stain at the apical membrane in the bronchial glands of the Weddell seal, wher…

Diving Into Diversity: Considering Intra-Specific Variation in Water Immersion Activity of Aquarium-Housed Magellanic Penguins.

Behavioral monitoring is essential for evaluating species-appropriate functioning, with growing recognition of the importance of understanding individual-level variation in modern zoos and aquariums. Yet animals housed in large groups, such as penguins, are seldom assessed at the individual level because of the practical difficulty of observing multiple individuals simultaneously. Using animal-borne immersion loggers, we quantified long-term (mean 233 days) and high-frequency (10-min intervals across 24 h) water-use patterns in 23 Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus housed at Sumida Aq

Impact of sport disciplines on gut microbiota in elite athletes: evidence from Taekwondo and diving athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Gut microbiota is closely associated with athletic performance, but differences between sport disciplines have rarely been reported. This study collected gut microbiota samples from athletes across different sport disciplines to further elucidate sport-specific effects on gut microbiota, thereby providing empirical evidence for the "exercise-gut microbiota" relationship within specialized athletic domains. METHODS: Gut microbiota from 27 professional Taekwondo athletes and 11 diving athletes underwent high-throughput sequencing analysis. RESULTS: (1) No significant difference exis…

Morphological Investigation of Uncharacterised Cardiovascular Structures in Shallow-Diving, Semi-Aquatic Freshwater Turtles (Chelidae: Emydura macquarii).

Reptiles with diving capabilities have evolved physiological adaptations as well as conformational changes to temporarily sustain life underwater. Despite the importance of both respiratory and cardiovascular systems during diving, most studies have focused on respiratory adaptations. Thus, characterisation of previously undescribed cardiovascular anatomical variations in diving vertebrates is of broad interest. Thirteen clinically healthy, free-ranging adult female Murray River turtles (Chelidae: Emydura macquarii) were collected for research purposes, euthanised and autopsied. Prominent, val…

Hiding in Plain Sight: Evidence of Echeneidae Cloacal and Gill Diving Behavior in Manta Ray Hosts.

Symbioses between remoras (Family Echeneidae) and marine megafauna are well-documented across diverse lineages. However, despite recent advancements in understanding the intricacies of these interactions, the dynamics of these relationships remain poorly understood, largely due to the highly mobile nature of both host and symbiont. Here we report seven observations of Echeneidae cloacal diving behavior in manta rays. These observations span all three currently described species of manta rays (Mobula yarae, Mobula birostris, and Mobula alfredi), demonstrate that large Echeneidae can perform clo…

Millimeter-Scale Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Striped Surfaces for Air Layer Retention and Drag Reduction in Diving Suits.

Traditional fully hydrophobic diving suits have limitations in reducing drag and improving speed, primarily due to the formation of an unstable air layer. To address this issue, we propose a millimeter-scale hydrophilic/hydrophobic striped surface design aimed at maintaining a stable air layer and achieving significant drag reduction. By strategically arranging alternating hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions in the critical areas of the diving suit, we first validated the feasibility of this method through preliminary simulations using the CFX simulation software. Subsequently, we demonstrated thr…

Optical Coherence Tomography Characterization of Torpedo Retinopathy: Diving Deep in Search of a Newer Classification System.

Purpose: Torpedo maculopathy is a rare congenital anomaly of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) involving the temporal edge of the macula, often diagnosed incidentally. There is minimal evidence in the ophthalmic literature regarding the multimodal imaging characteristics of these lesions. Existing classification systems inadequately describe detailed optical coherence tomography (OCT) features of the entity. Methods: This retrospective study included 18 torpedo maculopathy lesions from 16 patients at a tertiary care ophthalmic institution in Southern India over 6 years. Patients underwent d

Medullary dorsal horn neurons activated during voluntary diving express neurotransmitter receptors for glutamate and substance P.

The diving response is a cardiorespiratory reflex characterized by apnea, bradycardia and increased peripheral vascular resistance when animals submerge underwater. Afferent information initiating this reflex response projects from the nasal mucosa via trigeminal nerves to activate second-order afferent neurons within the medullary dorsal horn (MDH). The present study investigated the synapse between these trigeminal nerves and MDH neurons, specifically what neurotransmitter receptors are expressed by MDH neurons activated during diving. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to dive repetitive…

Mechanism of Efferocytosis in Determining Ischaemic Stroke Resolution-Diving into Microglia/Macrophage Functions and Therapeutic Modality.

After ischaemic cerebral vascular injury, efferocytosis-a process known as the efficient clearance of apoptotic cells (ACs) by various phagocytes in both physiological and pathological states-is crucial for maintaining central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis and regaining prognosis. The mechanisms of efferocytosis in ischaemic stroke and its influence on preventing inflammation progression from secondary injury were still not fully understood, despite the fact that the fundamental process of efferocytosis has been described in a series of phases, including AC recognition, phagocyte engulfment
