This study investigates the oxidative transformation of diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA), a synthetic ligand, during drinking water ozonation. The rate coefficients for the reactions of CaDTPA3- and ZnDTPA3- with ozone were determined to be 6200 and 3500 +/- 150 M-1 s-1, respectively. The reactivity of Fe(III)DTPA2- towards ozone was found to be much lower (< 10 M-1 s-1), but near neutral pH the reactivity of the Fe(III)-complexes is dominated by [Fe(III)(OH)]DTPA3-. Some of the most frequent drinking water contaminants are organic halocarbons. This paper will initially summarize the target organ effects of three halocarbons: 1,2-dichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and trichloroethylene. Following the brief summaries, a more detailed description of the oral hepatoxicity of carbon tetrachloride is presented. Data are provided that indicate that the hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride is enhanced when administered by corn oil gavage when compared to aqueous suspension gavage.

Previous reports indicate that the pressor response seen following intracranially applied angiotensin II (AII) in normal rats is absent in hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (DI) animals. The dipsogenic effect of intracranially injected AII was therefore examined in DI rats and in control rats. Volatile organics from New Orleans drinking water and pooled plasma were collected on a solid phenyl ether polymer and analyzed by gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques. Thirteen halogenated hydrocarbons were identified in the drinking water. Five halogenated compounds were found in the plasma. Tetrachloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride were found in both the plasma and the drinking water. Considerable variation in the relative concentrations of the halogenated hydrocarbons was noted from day to day in the drinking water.
