CD4 protein is a single chain transmembrane glycoprotein and has a broad functionality beyond cell-mediated immunity. In this study, we cloned the full-length coding sequence (CDS) of duck CD4 (duCD4) and analyzed its sequence and structure, and expression levels in several tissues. It consists of 1,449 nucleotides and encodes a 482 amino acid protein. Duck plague (DP) carrier mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were subjected to seven environmental and physiological conditions in an attempt to stimulate DP virus shedding. Black duck (Anas rubripes) eggs were collected during 1978 in the Atlantic Flyway. One egg from each of 49 clutches was analyzed for organochlorine compounds and mercury. DDE was detected in 39 eggs, ranging from 0.09 ppm to 3.4 ppm, wet weight. DDE residues were highest in eggs from Delaware, where the mean DDE level was 2.0 ppm.
