In search of stool donors: a multicenter study of prior knowledge, perceptions, motivators, and deterrents among potential donors for fecal microbiota transplantation.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a highly effective therapy for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection. Stool donors are essential, but difficult to recruit and retain. We aimed to identify factors influencing willingness to donate stool. This multi-center study with a 32-item questionnaire targeted young adults and health care workers via social media and university email lists in Edmonton and Kingston, Canada; London and Nottingham, England; and Indianapolis and Boston, USA. Items included baseline demographics and FMT knowledge and perception. Investigated motivators and dete

What individual and neighbourhood-level factors increase the risk of heat-related mortality? A case-crossover study of over 185,000 deaths in London using high-resolution climate datasets.

OBJECTIVE: Management of the natural and built environments can help reduce the health impacts of climate change. This is particularly relevant in large cities where urban heat island makes cities warmer than the surrounding areas. We investigate how urban vegetation, housing characteristics and socio-economic factors modify the association between heat exposure and mortality in a large urban area. METHODS: We linked 185,397 death records from the Greater London area during May-Sept 2007-2016 to a high resolution daily temperature dataset. We then applied conditional logistic regression withi…

Life course models for upper aero-digestive tract cancer.

Upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) cancers are collectively cancers of various human body sites, such as the oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus and larynx. Worldwide, they are the fourth most frequent cancer type and the fourth most common cause of mortality from cancer. Many studies have shown that several chronic diseases, such as cancer, which occur more commonly in later adulthood, are influenced by social and psychological circumstances during birth, childhood, adolescence and early adult life. It is suggested that the build up of problematic circumstances throughout life is the cause of dis

The gift of freedom? Exploring the realities of rescue from child trafficking in Ghana.

This paper is a critical reflection on the rescue and reintegration regime associated with the child trafficking intervention in Ghana. The paper acknowledges efforts by anti-trafficking NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) to address conditions of poverty, child/youth economic exploitation, and human rights abuses. However, it also observes that these interventions have had very little impact for some of the beneficiaries. Drawing on ethnographic research with young adults considered as trafficked victims by a child rights NGO in Ghana, the paper demonstrates how reintegrated young adults ar

Determinants of ECC in Sardinian preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of determinants on the presence of caries in pre-school children. BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN: A matched case-control study (1:2) was designed: 55 children (32 males, 23 females) with at least one buccal or lingual caries lesion on one primary maxillary incisor were selected (caries affected=1) and compared to randomly selected controls (no caries=0) paired for age and gender. Several variables concerning oral hygiene habits, use of fluoride supplementation, dietary habits, socio-economic status of the family and lifestyle factors were con

Economic hardship and sexually transmitted diseases in Haiti's rural Artibonite Valley.

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate and risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Haiti's rural Artibonite Valley. Women attending antenatal services at Hospital Albert Schweitzer from October to December 1996 were tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas, syphilis, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Of the 476 women tested, 121 (25.4%) had trichomonas, 11/475 (2.3%) had gonorrhea, 51/475 (10.7%) had chlamydia, 32/474 (6.8%) were seropositive for syphilis, 20/469 (4.3%) were seropositive for HIV, and 191 (40.1%) had at least one STD. Nearly 30% of the

International comparative analysis: main findings and conclusions.

This paper compares the experience of health and inequality reviewed in the Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish and Soviet profiles. With health systems very similar in formal organization and stated aims, health status based on death rates has followed very similar tendencies in each country. Sharp post-war falls in infant death slowed down from the 60s onwards, but continued to fall. Life expectancy also increased but again from the late 60s began to fall, particularly for middle-aged men. Inequalities in health-care provision and access have been paralleled by inequalities in health outcome betwee

SEROPREVALENCE OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS IN ONE-HUMPED CAMELS (CAMELUS DROMEDARIUS) IN QATAR.

Toxoplasma gondiii recognized as one of the most successful zoonotic parasites globally, infecting a wide range of hosts including camelids. This infection can lead to serious outcomes such as abortion, neonatal death, or fetal abnormalities. Camels play a crucial role in the economic, ecological, and social landscapes of various regions, particularly in the Middle East, highlighting the importance of close health monitoring and disease screening. Hence in this study, sera from 409 dromedary camels (39 males and 370 females) were examined for T. gondii IgG antibodies using the Modified Aggluti

Defining Disparities in Cochlear Implantation through the Social Determinants of Health.

Hearing loss is a global public health problem with high prevalence and profound impacts on health. Cochlear implantation (CI) is a well-established evidence-based treatment for hearing loss; however, there are significant disparities in utilization, access, and clinical outcomes among different populations. While variations in CI outcomes are influenced by innate biological differences, a wide array of social, environmental, and economic factors significantly impact optimal outcomes. These differences in hearing health are rooted in inequities of health-related socioeconomic resources. To def…

Positive predictors of quality of life for postpartum mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment.

The postpartum period brings a host of biopsychosocial, familial, and economic changes, which may be challenging for new mothers, especially those with trauma histories. Trauma-exposed women are at heightened risk for psychiatric symptomatology and reduced quality of life. The current study sought to evaluate whether a set of hypothesized promotive factors assessed during the first 18 months postpartum (positive parenting, family cohesion, and maternal resilience) are associated with life satisfaction in this population, after controlling for income and postpartum psychiatric symptoms. Analyse

Health economic evaluations of genomic newborn screening: Approaches by studies within the international consortium on newborn sequencing.

Affordability and value-for-money are key factors that will inform decisions about implementation of genomic newborn screening (gNBS) as a population-based program. Given the methodological and data-related challenges to evaluating health and economic outcomes of gNBS, there is a need for discussion and knowledge sharing amongst investigators responsible for conducting such evaluations. The International Consortium on Newborn Sequencing (ICoNS) includes academic and commercial gNBS pilot and implementation programs, and the ICoNS Economics Subcommittee assembles health economists who are invol

Lifecycle effects of a recession on health behaviors: Boom, bust, and recovery in Iceland.

This study uses individual-level longitudinal data from Iceland, a country that experienced a severe economic crisis in 2008 and substantial recovery by 2012, to investigate the extent to which the effects of a recession on health behaviors are lingering or short-lived and to explore trajectories in health behaviors from pre-crisis boom, to crisis, to recovery. Health-compromising behaviors (smoking, heavy drinking, sugared soft drinks, sweets, fast food, and tanning) declined during the crisis, and all but sweets continued to decline during the recovery. Health-promoting behaviors (consumptio

Prevalence and correlates of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and herpes simplex virus type 2 infections among adults: evidence from the NHANES III data.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) prevalence and risk factors exhibit considerable variations across populations in different geographic regions. Determinants and the transmission routes of KSHV infection are uncertain. We seek to identify the possible risk factors and the transmission routes of KSHV infection in non-endemic areas. METHODS: We collected annual cases and seroprevalence of KSHV and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) from the NHANES III sampled individuals from the US general population (1988-1994). We included 13,179 and 10,720 individuals with availa

Factors associated with early childhood caries among 3 to 6 year old children in India: A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a multifactorial disease as it is associated with biological, social and behavioral risk factors. However, not much research studied the influence of perinatal factors like birth weight, mode of delivery and gestational age with ECC. Aim of this study is to assess the association between ECC and risk factors, such as Socio-economic status (SES), Body mass index (BMI), Gestation age, birth weight and mode of delivery among Indian children aged 3 to 6 years. METHODS: In this cross sectional study 690 school children aged 3-6 years were included from f

The epidemic of cardio-vascular disease in renal failure: where does it come from, where do we go?

Cardio-vascular disease and death are among the most important medical and socio-economic challenges of the 21st century. Renal failure, a major medical problem per se, gives rise to an accelerated and strongly magnified model of atherogenesis and vascular damage. Already with a minor decrease in renal function, coronary and vascular risk are increased and play a role next to classical risk factors such as male gender, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia or smoking. The impact of renal failure on cardio-vascular risk remains present even after correction for these traditional risk factors.
