Magneto-Archimedes based 3D cell economic bioassembly.

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) cell assemblies is a critical step in bioengineering, and biomimetic fidelity largely depends on cellular density and spatial distribution. However, directly increasing cell density in bioinks often causes substantial cell loss during bioprinting. Here, we introduce a Magneto-Archimedes effect-based 3D cell-economic bioassembly strategy (3D-MACE) that achieves high cell density (up to 10-8cells ml-1), low cell loss (<5%), high controllability, and excellent accessibility. Using a vertically aligned pair of magnet arrays with identical polarization direction,

Economic and quality of life burden of dentine hypersensitivity in adults.

OBJECTIVE: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common oral condition that adversely affects daily functioning and well-being, yet evidence on its economic and quality-of-life (QoL) burden remains limited. This study quantified this burden among Australian adults. METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey collected data on the presence, duration, and frequency of DH. Annual direct costs (ADC), including self-care products and professional treatment, and productivity losses valued using the human capital approach were estimated from a societal perspective in 2026 Australian dollars. QoL was ass

Development of a techno-economic framework for optimizing wastewater reuse.

Communities are facing extreme pressure to provide safe water to the fast-growing population, especially in urban regions. Wastewater is a valuable resource which must be used to curb water shortage; otherwise, it would become a lost opportunity. However, the implementation of an effective water reuse scheme faces many techno-economic and social challenges, stressing the need for an integrated approach. This study presents a decision support framework for implementing water reuse in India by synthesizing and evaluating treatment trains for various applications. Compared to previous DSS (Decisi

[Clinical and economic efficiency of varicocelectomy in the treatment of male infertility].

Varicocele remains the most common potentially correctable cause of male infertility. Data from clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and original studies on the clinical and economic efficiency of varicocele treatment are summarized in this review. In men with clinical varicocele and impaired spermatogenesis, surgical repair improves semen parameters, including the number of progressively motile spermatozoa, and increases the likelihood of natural pregnancy. Before assisted reproductive technologies (ART), surgery is associated with higher clinical pregnancy and live birth r

Economic arguments in migration and health - a call for interdisciplinary action.

OBJECTIVE: the aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic relevance of I-131 whole body scan (WBS) performed after second empirical therapeutic doses of iodine-131 (I-131) in thyroglobulin (Tg)-positive thyroid cancer patients without evidence of local and distant metastasis. We also evaluated the efficacy of second empirical therapeutic doses of I-131 in these patients. METHODS: we retrospectively compared the results of diagnostic I-131 WBS and post-therapy scans of second therapeutic doses of I-131 in 38 patients with detectable Tg while off T4 therapy (TSH>25 mlU/ml).

Economic burden of dengue in Puerto Rico, 2010-2023.

BACKGROUND: Dengue remains a major public health challenge, particularly in endemic areas like Puerto Rico, where its economic burden is substantial. This study aimed to update the economic burden of dengue in Puerto Rico using recent data from patients, hospitals, and insurance companies, providing a clearer picture of the current situation. We estimated the total number of dengue cases with fever who sought care by adjusting for underreporting through a robust statistical framework linking island-wide passive surveillance data to sentinel acute febrile illness surveillance. METHODS: We obta

Perspectives on the economic costs of disease outbreaks to health systems.

Disease outbreaks are non-random public health phenomena attributed to known or idiopathic human, animal, and animal-based factors; a realm referred to as the One Health concept; a new global public health order for control and prevention of epidemics, endemics, and pandemics. These are diseases of viral, prion, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic origin, transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans and vice versa. Emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, Ebola, COVID-19, monkeypox, avian influenza, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis, and Lyme disease continue to affe

The economic costs of unpaid cancer caregiving: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Unpaid caregivers play a crucial role in providing care for people with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, yet their economic contributions are rarely recognised in economic evaluations, leaving caregivers to shoulder significant direct and indirect costs. AIM: To explore the direct and indirect costs experienced by unpaid caregivers of people with cancer receiving palliative care. DESIGN: A qualitative study underpinned by a social constructivist framework, reported in line with COREQ and RTARG guidelines. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with unpaid caregivers to

Mycotoxins in food and agriculture: from occurrence to economic consequences.

Filamentous fungus (moulds) create secondary metabolites called mycotoxins, which can be dangerous. These minuscule molecules (typically less than 1 000 Da) are almost inescapably found in nature. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Alternaria are among the fungal species that produce mycotoxins. If these secondary metabolites make their way into the food chain and production, they are harmful and have a big effect. In African countries like Nigeria that rely significantly on staple foods like grains, cereals, and nuts, mycotoxin contamination is especially problematic. Mycotoxins have att

Membranes: The only chance for the mRNA tortoise to win, economically.

The RNA revolution, advancing beyond traditional vaccines to new therapeutic modalities and constructs such as self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) and circular RNA (circRNA), continues to place increasing pressure on downstream purification. Diffusion-limited resins, the time-tested workhorse of protein purification, are fundamentally incompatible because mRNA is an enormous (>40 nm) molecule with low diffusivity (10-11-10-12 m2/s). Our perspective, rooted in core chemical engineering principles, applies transport analysis and re-examines published performance data to demonstrate why even optimized pe

The economic costs of alcohol consumption in Lithuania, 2015-20.

Alcohol per capita consumption in Lithuania among the population 15 years of age and older has been among the highest globally in recent decades. Long-term alcohol consumption trends and drinking patterns signal a significant public health problem, as well as social and economic losses. This study aimed to estimate the economic burden associated with alcohol consumption in Lithuania from 2015 to 2020. We used a cost-of-illness methodology with the human capital approach to estimate the economic burden and applied a prevalence-based approach. Using multiyear data, we estimated both, direct and

Racial and Economic Disparities in High-Temperature Exposure in Brazil.

Primary studies analyzing the distribution of exposure to the consequences of climate change among different vulnerable groups are scarce. This study addresses this gap by investigating racial and economic disparities in high-temperature exposure in Brazil, focusing on the impact on vulnerable subpopulations. We utilized georeferenced temperature data from the Global High-Resolution Estimates of Extreme Heat (GEHE) and population data from the 2010 Census. The disparity analyses included (i) estimating the exposure rate to temperatures exceeding 28 °C, expressed as population-weighted heat exp

Economic growth and suicide rates: Differential accumulated effects.

Economic growth has a protective effect against suicide, but the nature of this association remains unclear. This ecological study explored the relationship between economic growth and suicide rates across countries within a specific timeframe. Data on age-standardized suicide rates and gross domestic product per capita (GDPpc) from 198 countries between 1991 and 2021 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study and the World Bank. Using a two-way fixed-effects model and the compound annual growth rate, the association between age- and sex-adjusted suicide rates and GDPpc changes in p

Economic insecurity increases high earners' preference for risk.

This study examines how economic insecurity and income level influence individuals' preferences for risk in decision-making. Economic insecurity was experimentally manipulated in a laboratory setting, and participants' risk preference was subsequently assessed using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART). Participants completed the BART under either a gain frame, where inflating a virtual balloon increased potential monetary gains (Experiment 1), or a loss frame, where ballon inflation was necessary to avoid monetary loss (Experiment 2). Results showed that, in both gain and loss contexts, high
