A rare case of situs inversus totalis associated with sigmoid diverticulitis and appendicular agenesis. Embryological, clinical considerations and literature review.

The revelation of situs inversus totalis by a peritoneal syndrome is an extremely rare event. The association of this condition with sigmoid diverticulitis and agenesis of the vermiform appendix has not been described in the literature. This paper aims to present the first case of this type while screening the literature on this topic. The authors present the case of a sigmoid diverticulitis associated with situs inversus totalis and agenesis of the vermiform appendix, in a 44-year-old male patient. Because of abdominal pain located in the right iliac fossa, elevated temperature (38.2°C) and b

Morphometry of organization of middle meningeal artery through the analysis of bony canal in human's skull: A clinico-anatomical and embryological insight.

BACKGROUND: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) is the largest branch of the maxillary artery supplying meninges of the cranial cavity. The complexity of MMA development gives many opportunities for anatomical variation. Besides, the variant MMA can be easily injured when dealing with fractures of the base of the skull, epidural hematomas, and bypass procedures. Although various aberrant origins of the MMA have been documented in the literature, there is a lack of detailed morphometric aspects of this important arterial segment. Thus, in this study, we investigated the anatomical organization of the

Flow-related intracranial aneurysms associated with unfused arterial twigs relevant to different vascular anomalies: embryologic and hemodynamic considerations.

OBJECT: Cerebrovascular anomalies resulting from the persistence of unfused embryonic twig-like vessels are associated with intracranial aneurysms. All records of patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms who were treated at our institution were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of aneurysm-associated, unfused, twig-like vessels in the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Such vessels were recorded as twig-like MCA (T-MCA) or twig-like networks of an anomalous collateral artery (T-NACA). Additionally, we sought to characterize vulnerable intracranial aneurysms associated with those vascul

Embryological consideration of drainage of the left testicular vein into the ipsilateral renal vein: analysis of cases of a double inferior vena cava.

The right gonadal vein (GV=testicular vein in men, ovarian vein in women) usually drains into the inferior vena cava (IVC) while the left gonadal vein drains into the left renal vein (RV). This anatomical difference induces relatively weak haemodynamics in the left testicular vein (TV) and is considered to be a cause of a left varicocele. In textbooks on embryology, it has been documented that bilateral supracardinal veins (=origin of right and left IVC) and the subcardinal sinus (=origin of RVs and GVs) symmetrically develop during early embryogenesis. However, persistence and regression of t…

Infraoptic course of the anterior cerebral artery associated with an anterior communicating artery aneurysm: anatomic case report and embryological considerations.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: An infraoptic course of the proximal anterior cerebral artery is a rare anomaly that has been reported in 32 cases to date, often in association with cerebral aneurysms. This anomaly represents a maldevelopment in the embryogenesis of the anterior circle of Willis, resulting from the persistence of the primitive prechiasmal arterial anastomosis or an error in the development of the definitive ophthalmic artery (OphA). The case of a patient with a ruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysm and an anterior communicating artery aneurysm associated with this anomaly is desc

The role of bone centers in the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis: an embryologic approach using CT measurements in isolated craniosynostosis and Apert and Crouzon syndromes.

This paper describes the role of the displacement of bone centers, i.e., the tubers, in the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis. This displacement was studied in 54 patients with isolated or syndromic craniosynostosis in the form of CT scans as well as in two dry neonate skulls with Apert syndrome. For comparison, 49 fetal and 8 normal infant dry skulls were studied. Our investigation was restricted to the coronal and metopic sutures. The results showed a significantly more occipital localization of the frontal bone center and a more frontal localization of the parietal bone center at the side of

An updated review of the sebaceous gland and its role in health and diseases Part 1: Embryology, evolution, structure, and function of sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. The embryological development of the sebaceous gland follows that of the hair follicle and epidermal tissue, beginning between weeks 13 and 16 of fetal development. New sebaceous glands do not normally develop following birth, but their size increases with age. Sebocytes express a multitude of hormone receptors and are heavily regulated to secrete sebum by androgens. There is a large increase of sebum excretion at birth and again at puberty, until approximately age 17. In adulthood, sebum production remains stable and decl

Congenital coronary artery anomalies: a bridge from embryology to anatomy and pathophysiology--a position statement of the development, anatomy, and pathology ESC Working Group.

Congenital coronary artery anomalies are of major significance in clinical cardiology and cardiac surgery due to their association with myocardial ischaemia and sudden death. Such anomalies are detectable by imaging modalities and, according to various definitions, their prevalence ranges from 0.21 to 5.79%. This consensus document from the Development, Anatomy and Pathology Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology aims to provide: (i) a definition of normality that refers to essential anatomical and embryological features of coronary vessels, based on the integrated analysis of stu

Contribution of late professor T. C. Tung to the experimental embryology of Amphioxus. In memory of the 20th anniversary of Professor T. C. Tung's death.

Professor T. C. Tung (Fig. 1) was a prominent experimental embryologist in China. He was born in Jin County, Zhejiang Province, China in 1902. After he obtained his Bachelor's degree from the Department of Biology, Fudan University, Shanghai in 1927, he was appointed as a teaching assistant in that department until he moved to Belgium in 1930. He studied as a graduate student in Professors A. Brachet and A. M. Dalcq's laboratory at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium and obtained his Doctor of Science degree there in 1934. During that period, he made two short working visits to the Inst

Modified double trigger versus recombinant hCG alone for final oocyte maturation in IVF-ICSI: Impact on oocyte and embryological outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a modified double trigger (recombinant hCG -36 h plus GnRH agonist -34 h) improves oocyte maturation and embryological outcomes compared with r-hCG alone in IVF-ICSI cycles, and whether effects differ by age and ovarian reserve. METHODS: Retrospective single-center cohort study included 80 IVF-ICSI cycles performed between 2023 and 2025, comparing a modified double trigger (n=42) with r-hCG alone (n=38). The primary outcome was oocyte maturation rate (MII/total oocytes). Secondary outcomes included total and MII oocytes, fertilization, cleavage, blastulation, da

Congenital absence of vas deferens: Anatomical and embryological inputs from a series of autopsies reported in Europe throughout the 18th and 19th century.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) is a syndrome with a heterogeneous presentation: bilateral (CBAVD) or unilateral (CUAVD), complete or partial and associated or not with other anomalies of the male urogenital system. A turning point came in 1968 when CBAVD was associated with cystic fibrosis and its CFTR gene mutations. Genetic studies then revealed that a minority of CBAVD but a majority of CUAVD are CFTR-independent. In the literature, reference is classically made to two sources from the 18th and 19th century: Hunter and Reverdin. This scarcity prompted us to look for additiona

Integrative approach to elucidate the embryological effects of caffeine in Cyprinus carpio: Bioconcentration and alteration of oxidative stress-related gene expression patterns.

Caffeine (CAF) is an alkaloid, which acts as a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant drug. In recent years, CAF has been recurrently detected in water bodies, generating deleterious effects in aquatic organisms. The information on the toxic effects of CAF in the environment is still limited. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine whether CAF at environmentally relevant concentrations (CAF concentrations were selected based on studies on the worldwide occurrence of this compound and on the toxicity of CAF in aquatic species) is capable of inducing alterations to embryonic developmen

Examination of the Annular Tendon (Annulus of Zinn) as a Common Origin of the Extraocular Rectus Muscles: 2. Embryological Basis of Extraocular Muscles Anomalies.

PURPOSE: Many reports have described anomalous connections of the superior rectus (SR) with other extraocular rectus muscles, in which additional heads of the other three rectus muscles likely provided the connections. We examined how these connections are established during fetal development. METHODS: We analyzed paraffin-embedded horizontal sections from 25 late-stage fetuses. Horizontal sections are best suited for understanding the mediolateral relationships of muscle origins. RESULTS: We confirmed a common tendinous origin of the lateral rectus (LR), inferior rectus (IR) and medial rect

Can the pathogenesis of auditory ossicular malformations be explained by the branchial-based theory?--Evaluation by the consecutive distribution of embryologic foci in 87 cases.

BACKGROUND: Development of the auditory ossicles is initiated by induction of the cartilage primordium of each ossicle between the fifth and seventh fetal week. It is well known that primordium of the upper part of the ossicular chain is derived from the first branchial arch and that of the lower part develops from the second branchial arch. Previous studies have suggested that auditory ossicular malformations are caused by deficiencies in the early period of induction of the cartilage primordium. However, auditory ossicular malformations can occur at any developing stage, and their clinical f

Promoter transgenics reveal multiple gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I-expressing cell populations of different embryological origin in mouse brain.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH-I) is thought to be expressed by a single, highly spatially restricted group of neurons, which originate in the olfactory placode and migrate through the nose into the medial septum and hypothalamus from where they control fertility. Transgenic mice bearing a 13.5 kb GnRH-I-lacZ reporter construct were derived and found to express high levels of beta-galactosidase mRNA and protein within the septohypothalamic GnRH neurons in a correct temporal and spatial manner. Unexpectedly, low levels of beta-galactosidase were also present in three further populations

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the liver associated with long-term oral contraceptive use. Possible role of estrogens in the genesis of embryologically distinct liver tumors.

We report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma arising in a 34-year-old woman with a 16-year history of oral contraceptive use. This is the first reported case of hepatic rhabdomyosarcoma associated with oral contraception. The tumor did not grossly or microscopically involve biliary structures or gall bladder. It was mostly comprised of undifferentiated spindle cells that were histologically similar to embryonal sarcoma. Foci of cells showing rhabdomyoblastic differentiation blended into poorly formed muscle bundles. No epithelial neoplasm was identified by either morphologic or immunohistochemical ana
