Winding down for sleep: How behavioral, cognitive, motivational, and emotional factors interact to influence sleep regulation and health.

Animals do not simply fall asleep when they need rest. Without conscious effort, most animals engage in a series of sleep-preparatory behaviors, such as nesting. These are stereotypical actions performed in a temporally structured pre-sleep phase. Researchers have examined these behaviors from an evolutionary perspective, as they must provide some advantage. One hypothesis is that they have an indirect fitness benefit by facilitating de-arousal, making it easier to transition from wakefulness to sleep. In humans, regular positive bedtime routines are considered a main pediatric dimension of sl

Trajectory patterns of personal growth in the transition to motherhood: The role of fertility treatments and emotional regulation.

OBJECTIVES: The transition to motherhood carries the potential for experiencing mental distress alongside positive mental changes such as personal growth. This study sought to expand the scarce knowledge regarding the trajectories of personal growth in the transition to motherhood and to identify multiple patterns of growth and their predictors, such as undergoing fertility treatments, emotion regulation abilities, and background variables. METHOD: Four hundred three pregnant nulliparous women were recruited through social media and completed self-report questionnaires in three phases: during

Cytisinicline vs. Varenicline in Tobacco Addiction: A Literature Review Focused on Emotional Regulation, Psychological Symptoms, and Mental Health.

Tobacco use disorder remains a leading cause of preventable mortality, with nicotine playing a central role in the development and maintenance of dependence, mainly through its action on α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Smoking cessation treatments must address both physiological withdrawal and the affective disturbances (such as anxiety, irritability, and mood lability) which often facilitate relapses. This review compares two pharmacotherapies used in smoking cessation, varenicline and cytisinicline (cytisine), with particular focus on their impact on emotional regulation, ps…

Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with mood disorders and the roles of self-compassion and emotional regulation.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the characteristics and psychological mechanism of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with mood disorders. We examined how self-compassion and emotional regulation affected NSSI and tested the mediating role of self-compassion in the link between emotional regulation and NSSI. METHOD: We recruited outpatient and inpatient adolescent patients with bipolar and related disorders or depressive disorders (DSM-5), with a focus on NSSI. We also recruited healthy controls from the community. We collected demographic and clinical data. The Adolescent Self…

Seeking connection, autonomy, and emotional feedback: A self-determination theory of self-regulation in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent and highly debated diagnosis for mental disorder in practice today. Two decades of research have substantially contributed to evolving conceptualizations and understanding of the condition. However, this evolution has not been extended to theoretical research. Current cognitive behavioral-based theories aim to identify the etiology of ADHD and experience challenges in accommodating the full spectrum of both neurobiological and behavioral research evidence. Characterizations historically associated with mental illness

The Severity of Gambling and Gambling Related Cognitions as Predictors of Emotional Regulation and Coping Strategies in Adolescents.

People with gambling disorder (GD) exhibit distorted cognitions and superstitious beliefs more often than the general population. Similarly, difficulties in coping and emotion dysregulation are more prevalent among those with GD, and could determine the onset of GD in particularly vulnerable groups such as adolescents. This study examines the relationship between gambling severity and gambling-related cognitions with coping strategies and emotion regulation. Also, it explores how accurately gambling severity and gambling-related cognitions were able to predict emotion regulation and coping str

Toward operationalizing deficient emotional self-regulation in newly referred adults with ADHD: A receiver operator characteristic curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research suggests that deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR) is common and morbid among attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients. The main aim of the present study was to assess whether high and low levels of DESR in adult ADHD patients can be operationalized and whether they are clinically useful. METHODS: A total of 441 newly referred 18- to 55-year-old adults of both sexes with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: Fifth Edition (DSM-5) ADHD completed self-reported rating scales. We operationalized DESR using items from th

Video game therapy for emotional regulation and impulsivity control in a series of treated cases with bulimia nervosa.

Although standard psychological treatments have been successful in treating several core features in eating disorders (ED), other characteristics such as emotional regulation or impulsivity appear to be more resistant to change. There is a growing body of evidence to support the efficacy of cognitive remediation for cognitive and emotional difficulties in ED. Playmancer/ Islands is a video game (VG) designed to specifically treat mental disorders, characterized by problems in impulse control. The objective of the game is to increase self-control over emotions, decision making and behaviours. T…

Maternal versus paternal physical and emotional abuse, affect regulation and risk for depression from adolescence to early adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Current research has established that depression is a common outcome of child abuse. The current study extends previous research by examining the relationship between parental emotional and physical abuse and adolescents' depressive symptoms using a prospective longitudinal design. We anticipated that this relationship would be mediated through problems in affect regulation, consistent with the view that the presence of abuse in the parent-child relationship would derail the development of adaptive affect regulation. Finally, we further examined gender-linked transmission of risk by

microRNA-17-5p modulates ventral hippocampal transcriptome and synaptic proteome: Implications for emotional regulation in adult male rats.

The hippocampus plays a crucial role in memory and emotional regulation, with its dorsal pole supporting cognitive functions and the ventral hippocampus modulating anxiety and affective processing via limbic interactions. Chronic restraint stress induces anxious- and depressive-like behaviors in rodents, alongside transcriptomic changes in the ventral hippocampus. Emerging evidence highlights microRNAs as modulators of synaptic architecture and gene expression. Notably, miR-17-5p-part of the miR-17-92 cluster- shows increased cortical expression in individuals with mood disorders, and its leve…

Degeneration of core neural tracts for emotional regulation in a patient with traumatic brain injury: A case report.

RATIONALE: Several brain structures, including the orbital prefrontal cortex, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex, are considered key structures in the neural circuitry underlying emotion regulation. We report on a patient showing behavior changes and degeneration of core neural tracts for emotional regulation following traumatic brain injury (TBI). PATIENT CONCERNS: A 51-year-old male patient suffered an in-car accident. The patient lost consciousness for approximately 30 days, and his Glasgow Coma Scale score was 3. He und…

Risk factors of psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic: The roles of coping style and emotional regulation.

BACKGROUND: When COVID-19 emerged in China in late 2019, most citizens were home-quarantined to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Extended periods of isolation have detrimental effects on an individual's mental health. Therefore, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic should include assessment of psychological distress and its known risk factors, including coping style and emotional regulation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed 6,027 Chinese university students recruited from May 25, 2020 to June 10, 2020. In addition to sociodemographic information, participant data were co…

Associations of depressive rumination and positive affect regulation with emotional distress after the death of a loved one.

The death of a loved one may precipitate symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Brooding about the causes and consequences of one's negative affect (NA), also termed depressive rumination, has been linked to distress after loss. The role of dysregulation of positive affect (PA) has received less attention. We examined (1) the factor structure of depressive rumination and PA dysregulation and (2) to what extent these factors were related to PGD, PTSD and depression symptom levels. Self-report data were included from 235 Dutch bereaved p

Titanium-treated surroundings attenuate psychological stress associated with autonomic nerve regulation in office workers with daily emotional stress.

Housing mice in the presence of small particles of titanium has been shown to reduce stress-responsive behavior via the autonomic nervous system. Here, we examined the effects of nighttime titanium exposure on stress parameters and autonomic nerve activity in office workers with emotional stress. A randomized double-blind, placebo controlled trial was performed in 24 male subjects with desk jobs, who were randomly allocated to spend 5 nights in rooms with or without titanium. The serum concentrations of stress-responsive hormones (cortisol, adrenocorticotropin, and catecholamine) were measured

Affect regulation and food intake in bulimia nervosa: emotional responding to food cues after deprivation and subsequent eating.

Emotional responding to salient food cues and effects of food deprivation and consumption were investigated in 32 women with bulimia and 32 control women. One half of each group was food deprived before viewing unpleasant, neutral, pleasant, and food-related pictures. Then participants could eat from a buffet before viewing a parallel picture set. Women with bulimia showed a substantial potentiation of startle responses during viewing of food cues relative to control women. This startle potentiation was attenuated by food deprivation and augmented by increased food consumption. These data supp
