Models of gonorrhoea transmission from the mouth and saliva.

This Personal View argues for a new framework of gonorrhoea transmission in men who have sex with men in which the oropharynx plays a major role in transmitting gonorrhoea to, or acquiring gonorrhoea from, their partner's oropharynx, penis, or anorectum through either direct contact or via saliva. To avoid preconceived notions of transmission dynamics, we ask readers to imagine that they are investigating a new sexually transmitted infection. On the basis of the existing clinical and epidemiological data for gonorrhoea at the penis, oropharynx, and anorectum site, we develop two models for tra

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has been recognized for over a decade, and usually refers to MRSA identified in previously healthy individuals with no recognized MRSA risk factors. Infections range from minor skin and soft tissue infections, through to severe pneumonia and necrotizing fasciitis. This review summarizes the current data on the epidemiology and molecular features of CA-MRSA, in addition to diagnosis and therapeutic measures. We also refer to current national guidelines for the management of these infections. Areas of agreement include th

Epidemiological insights on malnutrition: some resurrected, others restructured, a few retired.

In its modern sense, epidemiology has progressed from a classical concern of causality as expressed within biological limits to recognition that a variety of social factors have proportionate significance in the origin and behavior of human nutritional disorders. Basically an analytical process, nutritional epidemiology has grown to include, among objectives for prevention and control, a synthesis of plans for intervention; the monitoring of action programs introduced; and again a parallel analytic mission to evaluate such accomplishments as programs bring forth. Nutritional epidemiology, so e

Infection prevention and control measures for emerging infectious disease: lessons learned from the first case of imported Lassa fever in China.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease prevalent in West Africa. West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCHSCU) received China's first imported case of Lassa fever from overseas. We described the epidemiological investigation and infection prevention and control measures of this case following the confirmed diagnosis. METHODS: An emergency epidemiological team defined close contacts and implemented infection prevention and control (IPC) measures: (1) isolation in a designated isolation room, (2) environmental disinfection for high-, medium-, and low-risk areas, (3)

The epidemiology of motor neuron disease in Northern Ireland using capture-recapture methodology.

Capture-recapture analysis allows an investigator to estimate the number of unobserved cases in an epidemiological survey, although it has not been employed widely in published research to date. This study examines the usefulness of capture-recapture analysis in measuring the incidence and prevalence of motor neuron disease (MND) in Northern Ireland (NI). Cases were ascertained from the NI MND register to measure incidence and prevalence. The authors then employed capture-recapture analysis to estimate the number of missing cases. Less than one case was estimated to be missing from the prevale

Epidemiologic Characteristics of Heart Disease.

Bovine heart diseases are classified by affected structures and etiologic agents, often identified through gross postmortem findings. Common conditions in feedlots include bacterial myocarditis and pericarditis caused by Histophilus somni, and congestive heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension. Less frequent issues include bacterial endocarditis and traumatic reticulopericarditis. Rare causes like ionophore toxicosis can lead to mortality in exposed groups. Understanding the epidemiologic patterns of these diseases helps practitioners identify causes and implement corrective measures. This

Brucellosis in Humans and Animals in Kyrgyzstan.

Brucellosis is a globally reemerging and neglected zoonosis causing serious public health problems as well as considerable economic losses due to infection of livestock. Although the epidemiology of brucellosis has been well studied and its various aspects in humans and animals are well understood, it is still one of the most challenging health problems in many developing countries such as Kyrgyzstan. This review describes epidemiological characteristics of brucellosis in humans and animals, its impact on animal production and the role of implemented infection control measures in Kyrgyzstan. P

[The phenomenon of large-area asynchronism in epizootic manifestations of plague and the optimization of the epidemiological surveillance of this infection in the northwestern Caspian Sea region].

The studies were undertaken in the northwestern Caspian Sea region, the European part of Russia, which is noted for high plague epidemic rates. An analysis of many-year data from the plague institutions has established a unique phenomenon which is characterized by asynchronous epizootic functioning of 2 large-scale sandy and steppe foci undivided by physical borders. Great possibilities of differential prophylactic measures and optimization of plaque epidemiological surveillance, which are the basis for predicting the epizootic and epidemiological situation with higher confidence by applying v

Incidence & prevalence of stroke in India: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: There has been more than 100 per cent increase in incidence of stroke in low- and middle-income countries including India from 1970-1979 to 2000-2008. Lack of reliable reporting mechanisms, heterogeneity in methodology, study population, and small sample size in existing epidemiological studies, make an accurate estimation of stroke burden in India challenging. We conducted a systematic review of epidemiologic studies on stroke conducted in India to document the magnitude of stroke. METHODS: All population-based, cross-sectional studies and cohort studies from India w

Critical review of the epidemiological literature on occupational exposure to perchloroethylene and cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Of an estimated 500,000 workers in the USA potentially exposed to perchloroethylene (PCE), the largest share is employed in the dry-cleaning industry. PCE, a non-flammable solvent, has commercial applications as a chemical intermediate, metal degreaser and, since the 1950s, primary solvent in the dry-cleaning industry. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) currently finds sufficient evidence to designate PCE as carcinogenic in animals, with limited evidence in humans. With regard to occupational exposure through dry-cleaning, PCE is considered to be possibly carcin

Prospective whole genome sequencing to aid the identification and control of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus transmissions in a neonatal ICU.

BACKGROUND: Conventional surveillance methods may miss healthcare-associated pathogen transmission, particularly for common, drug-susceptible organisms. It is unclear if prospective genomic analyses can help identify otherwise silent transmission events and inform prevention efforts. METHODS: We sequenced methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) surveillance and clinical isolates in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of an academic hospital between February 2022 and March 2024. Insights gleaned from genomic-epidemiologic analyses were used to control a large MSSA cluster and

Systematic literature review of the epidemiology of glycogen storage disease type 1a.

Glycogen storage disease (GSD) type 1a is an inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disease caused by a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphatase activity. The objectives of this research were to systematically review the published literature on the epidemiology of GSD 1a and to assess the performance of reported epidemiology measures in a simulation model. In this systematic literature review 2,539 record titles and abstracts were screened. Of these, only 11 studies contained relevant data on GSD 1a disease epidemiology. Reported disease frequency ranged from 0.085/100,000 to 10.3/100,000 newborns

Clinico-epidemiological survey of feline parvovirus circulating in three Egyptian provinces from 2020 to 2021.

Feline parvovirus infection, caused by feline parvovirus and canine parvovirus 2, is a highly contagious, life-threatening disease affecting cats. The available epidemiological data on parvovirus infection in cats in Egypt is limited. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to provide data concerning the epidemiological profile of cats infected with parvovirus, including the prevalence of parvovirus infection in cats in three Egyptian provinces (Sohag, Assiut, and Cairo) and the associated risk factors. Using rapid antigen tests of fecal samples and conventional PCR, the overall prevalence

Wastewater Analysis for Community-Wide Drugs Use Assessment.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) complements existing epidemiology-based estimation techniques and provides objective, evidence-based estimates of illicit drug use. After consumption, biomarkers - drugs and their metabolites - excreted to toilets and flushed into urban sewer networks can be measured in raw wastewater samples. The quantified loads can serve as an estimate for the collective consumption of all people contributing to the wastewater sample. This transdisciplinary approach, further explained in this chapter, has developed, matured and is now established for monitoring substances

Rift Valley fever epidemiology, surveillance, and control: what have models contributed?

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging vector-borne zoonotic disease that represents a threat to human health, animal health, and livestock production, particularly in Africa. The epidemiology of RVF is not well understood, so that forecasting RVF outbreaks and carrying out efficient and timely control measures remains a challenge. Various epidemiological modeling tools have been used to increase knowledge on RVF epidemiology and to inform disease management policies. AIM: This narrative review gives an overview of modeling tools used to date to measure or model RVF risk in animal

Epidemiology and control of scabies in an Egyptian village.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have addressed the epidemiology of scabies among rural populations in developing countries; however, the epidemiology of scabies among the rural population in Egypt is unknown. We sought to determine the magnitude of scabies infestation in an Egyptian village and to evaluate the control measures after 1 year. METHODS: This study was carried out on 3147 residents of Mit-Moaned village in Dakahlia govemorate, Egypt. It was a cross-sectional follow-up study where the same individuals examined in round I were re-examined in round III. The two rounds were separated by a pe

A Probabilistic Synthesis of Malaria Epidemiology: Exposure, Infection, Parasite Densities, and Detection.

The epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria presents a unique set of challenges due to the complicated dynamics of infection, immunity, disease, and detection. Studies of malaria epidemiology commonly measure malaria parasite densities or prevalence, but since malaria is so complex with so many factors to consider, a complete mathematical synthesis of malaria epidemiology has been elusive. Here, we take a new approach. From a simple model of malaria exposure and infection in human cohorts as they age, we develop random variables describing the multiplicity of infection (MoI) and the age

Guidelines for Reporting Oral Epidemiologic Studies to Inform Burden Estimation (GROESBE).

High-quality prevalence and incidence studies of oral conditions are essential for estimation of disease burden and comparison of estimates among countries and over time, as well as for priority setting, resource allocation, and planning public health action. Existing systematic reviews of the epidemiology of untreated dental caries, severe periodontitis, and edentulism, carried out for the Global Burden of Disease study, showed inadequate and incomplete reporting of the measurement of oral conditions as well as a lack of consistency and comparability with other health conditions. These issues
