Traditional reviews, meta-analyses and pooled analyses in epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: The use of review articles and meta-analysis has become an important part of epidemiological research, mainly for reconciling previously conducted studies that have inconsistent results. Numerous methodologic issues particularly with respect to biases and the use of meta-analysis are still controversial. METHODS: Four methods summarizing data from epidemiological studies are described. The rationale for meta-analysis and the statistical methods used are outlined. The strengths and limitations of these methods are compared particularly with respect to their ability to investigate h

Estimation of the transmission dynamics of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses.

For the evaluation of the epidemiology of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in a herd of 510 horses in SW Mongolia, several mathematical models of the transmission dynamics were constructed. Because the field data contain information on the presence of the parasite (determined by PCR) and the presence of antibodies (determined by IFAT), the models cater for maternal protection with antibodies, susceptible animals, infected animals and animals which have eliminated the parasite and also allow for age-dependent infection in susceptible animals. Maximum likelihood estimation procedures were used

A Multi-Region SEIR Model Incorporating Inter-County Mobility and Time-Dependent Transmission Dynamics: Application to COVID-19 Disease Outbreak Data in North Carolina.

Classical infectious disease compartmental models typically do not incorporate spatial heterogeneity or mobility. We develop a multi-region susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model in which disease dynamics are coupled via inter-region mobility and the transmission rate is both region and time dependent. We calibrate the model using rolling averages of daily COVID-19 data in all 100 North Carolina counties. Mobility parameters are prescribed using daily inter-county commuter data. The number of transmission rate parameters is substantially reduced by hypothesizing that the dynamics

Global dynamics of an age-structured cholera model with saturation incidence and multiple transmission pathways.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. With the consideration of the transmission mechanism and heterogeneity of population, an age-structured cholera epidemic model is proposed, involving saturation incidence rates that describe direct and indirect transmission pathways and all class-ages with the susceptible age of susceptible individuals, infection age of infected individuals and biological age of Vibrio cholerae. The focus is to investigate the global dynamics of the model by using the basic reproduction number R 0 . After establishing the well-pose

Time-series evaluation of an ED-based syndromic alarm system before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance and limitations of an emergency department (ED)-based syndromic surveillance (SyS) model for detecting respiratory infection outbreaks in Korea, across distinct age groups and epidemiological contexts before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective time-series analysis using nationwide data from Level 1 and 2 EDs between January 2017 and December 2022. Syndromic visits were defined as those with fever (≥38.0 °C) or respiratory symptoms. Age-stratified autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models were trained on d

Predicting and comparing long-term measles antibody profiles of different immunization policies.

OBJECTIVE: Measles outbreaks are infrequent and localized in areas with high coverage of measles vaccine. The need is to assess long-term effectiveness of coverage. Since 1991, no measles epidemic affecting the whole island has occurred in Taiwan, China. Epidemiological models are developed to predict the long-term measles antibody profiles and compare the merits of different immunization policies on the island. METHODS: The current measles immunization policy in Taiwan, China, is 1 dose of measles vaccine at 9 months of age and 1 dose of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine at 15 months …

Stochastic effects on endemic infection levels of disseminating versus local contacts.

The effects of two levels of mixing on endemic infection levels are shown to differ for identically conformed deterministic compartmental (DC) and stochastic compartmental (SC) models. Both DC and SC models give similar endemic levels when populations are large, immunity is short lived, and mixing is universal. But local transmissions and/or transient immunity decrease overall population infection levels in SC but not in DC models. DC models also fail to detect the greater effects of eliminating disseminating transmissions in comparison to eliminating local transmissions shown by SC models. Th

Structural determinants of communicable disease risk in asylum reception centres.

INTRODUCTION: With over 120 million people forcibly displaced globally, asylum reception systems represent critical epidemiological interfaces. This synthesis is not confined to a single geographic region: evidence was drawn from reception systems across high-income host countries in Europe and, where available, comparable settings elsewhere, reflecting the substantial heterogeneity of reception models worldwide. Within a One Health framework, these socio-spatial environments shape communicable disease dynamics through accommodation density, sanitation capacity, and governance continuity. ARE

Relationships and Mechanisms Between Occupational Risk Factors and Distal Upper Extremity Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The relationships between workplace risk factors and upper extremity injuries from epidemiological and laboratory studies were examined. BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies are associated with several limitations, affecting the strength of association between risk factors and the development of injuries. METHOD: In this narrative review, we identified epidemiological and laboratory studies (published primarily since 1997) investigating exposure to workplace risk factors (force, repetition, posture, vibration) and risk of hand/wrist tendon-related disorders, epicondylitis, and carp

Effects of radiation exposure from cardiac imaging: how good are the data?

Concerns about medical exposure to ionizing radiation have become heightened in recent years as a result of rapid growth in procedure volumes and the high radiation doses incurred from some procedures. This paper summarizes the evidence base undergirding concerns about radiation exposure in cardiac imaging. After classifying radiation effects, explaining terminology used to quantify the radiation received by patients, and describing typical doses from cardiac imaging procedures, this paper will address the major epidemiological studies having bearing on radiation effects at doses comparable to

Epidemiological and clinicopathological factors associated with infection by multiple pathogens transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato in naturally infected dogs in the Semiarid area of Northeastern Brazil.

Domestic dogs are frequently exposed to tick-borne pathogens such as Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis, which can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations, although little is known about the epidemiological and clinicopathological profiles of mono- and co-infections. This study aimed to characterize infection patterns and identify clinical and epidemiological factors associated with mono-infections, and co-infections with two or more pathogens in naturally infected dogs. We analyzed 181 dogs from a hospital population with suspected hemoparasitic infec

Advancing infection profiling under data uncertainty through contagion potential.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of asymptomatic cases challenged the reliability of epidemiological statistics in policymaking. To address this, we introduced contagion potential (CP) as a continuous metric derived from sociodemographic and epidemiological data to quantify the infection risk posed by the asymptomatic within a region. However, CP estimation is hindered by incomplete or biased incidence data, where underreporting and testing constraints make direct estimation infeasible. To overcome this limitation, we employ a hypothesis-testing approach to infer CP from sampled da

Statistical issues in health impact assessment at the state and local levels.

In this work we discuss the uncertainty in estimating the human health risk due to exposure to air pollution, including personal and population average exposure error, epidemiological designs and methods of analysis. Different epidemiological models may lead to very different conclusions for the same set of data. Thus, evaluation of the assumptions made and sensitivity analysis are necessary.Short-term health impact indicators may be calculated using concentration-response (C-R) functions. We discuss different methods to combine C-R function estimates from a given locale and time period with t…

The development of an age structured model for schistosomiasis transmission dynamics and control and its validation for Schistosoma mansoni.

Mathematical models are potentially useful tools to aid in the design of control programmes for parasitic diseases. In this paper, a fully age structured epidemiological model of human schistosomiasis is developed and parameterized, and used to predict trends in infection prevalence, intensity and prevalence of heavy infections over age and time during several rounds of mass and age targeted treatment. The model is validated against data from a Schistosoma mansoni control programme in Kenya.

A Kermack-McKendrick type epidemic model with double threshold phenomenon (and a possible application to Covid-19).

The suggestion by K.L. Cooke (1967) that infected individuals become infective if they are exposed often enough for a natural disease resistance to be overcome is built into a Kermack-McKendrick type epidemic model with post-latency age. Both the case that the resistance may be the same for all hosts and the case that it is distributed among the host population are considered. In addition to the familiar threshold behavior of the final size of the epidemic with respect to a basic reproductive number, an Allee effect is generated for the final cumulative force of infection by the final cumulati

Spatiotemporal SEIQR Epidemic Modeling with Optimal Control for Vaccination, Treatment, and Social Measures.

This paper introduces a spatiotemporal SEIQR epidemic model governed by a system of reaction-diffusion partial differential equations that incorporates optimal control strategies. The model captures the transmission dynamics of an infectious disease across space and time. The model incorporates the quarantined compartment Q as part of the epidemic structure. It also includes three time-dependent control variables representing vaccination, treatment of quarantined individuals, and non-pharmaceutical interventions that reduce transmission. The study has four main objectives: (i) to prove the exi

Efficient sequential Bayesian inference for state-space epidemic models using ensemble data assimilation.

Estimating latent epidemic states and model parameters from partially observed, noisy data remains a major challenge in infectious disease modeling. State-space formulations provide a coherent probabilistic framework for such inference, yet fully Bayesian estimation is often computationally prohibitive because evaluating the observed-data likelihood requires integration over a latent trajectory. The Sequential Monte Carlo squared (SMC2) algorithm offers a principled approach for joint state and parameter inference, combining an outer SMC sampler over parameters with an inner particle filter th
