Double-way drainage device for cystic decompression: a technical note.

Decompression is a conservative treatment approach, either definitive or adjuvant, to jaw cysts (of odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin). It relieves intracystic pressure, which allows size decrease of the pathology concomitant to bone neoformation. Several devices have been described with the purpose of decompressing a lesion, which attempted to fulfil ideal characteristics, but many have displayed disadvantages, such as the impossibility of use in edentulous patients, being prone to contamination, clinical discomfort, etc. Thus, the objective of this technical note is to present a new app

Toward developing a compact total artificial heart using a soft robotic fluidic transmission system.

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of mortality, with limited possibilities for transplantation due to a critical shortage of donor hearts. Replacing the heart with total artificial hearts (TAHs) remains challenging, due to size constraints and energy requirements, among others. To address this, we introduce the LIMO heart, a compact TAH concept based on an efficient soft fluidic transmission system. By reducing actuator volume and enhancing energy transfer, LIMO enables a more compact and efficient design. We developed a soft ventricle prototype using thin-walled pouch actuators that

The Retilight, a portable LED endo-illuminator.

In modern small-gauge vitreoretinal surgery, the surgeon navigates the occutome and a rigid optical fiber endo-illuminator into the posterior segment. Effective endo-illumination is crucial for minimizing surgical risks and ensuring optimal outcomes by enhancing the visibility of ocular structures. Traditionally, endo-illuminators in vitreoretinal surgery have relied on xenon light sources provided by the vitrectomy system. However, light-emitting diode (LED) light sources have now emerged as a superior alternative, offering both high light intensity and increased reliability. We present our i

Bio-inspired microneedles with hierarchical microchannels for rapid interstitial fluid collection and analysis.

The rapid and efficient detection of biomarkers in interstitial fluid (ISF) represents a compelling alternative to traditional invasive blood sampling for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. Here, bio-inspired microneedles (MNs) with hierarchical microchannels (HMC-MNs), emulating the liquid transport properties of Sarracenia trichomes, are presented. These MNs are fabricated using a secondary mold replication technique, ensuring cost-effectiveness and scalability. The HMC-MNs leverage capillary action to enhance ISF extraction, as validated through ex vivo and in vivo experiments demonstratin

RehaBricks: An Electronic Modular Pegboard for Improving Upper Limb Exercise Adaptability.

Pegboards are commonly used in occupational therapy for upper limb rehabilitation. However, conventional pegboards do not allow for automatic tracking of training sessions. Additionally, although several electronic pegboards are currently available, they are all limited in the set of rehabilitation exercises that can be executed, due to their fixed planar shape. To address this issue, we introduce a novel electronic modular pegboard system, Rehabricks, which is composed of basic module units and can be assembled into curved shapes. By offering more complex patterns and shapes, Rehabricks can p

An efficient high-gain bidirectional interleaved boost converter for PV integration to DC microgrid.

The design of a power electronic interface for high voltage difference DC buses is a key aspect in DC microgrid applications. A multi-port non isolated interleaved high-voltage gain bidirectional converter, which facilitates bidirectional power transfer and islanded operation in a DC microgrid, is presented in this paper. The forward high-voltage transfer ratio is achieved using a voltage multiplier circuit, and the high-gain step-down power conversion is performed using a resonant power module. A novel power transfer selection algorithm is proposed to control power flow among the interfaces o
