Effects of acupuncture and exercise on EEG characteristics and cognitive control in college students with high procrastination tendency.

Procrastination is more than just a common human foible; it is a ubiquitous behavioral disorder that can negatively impact learning, productivity, and mental health. The psychological and neurological mechanisms underlying chronic procrastination are surprisingly complex, involving impairments in self-control, emotional regulation, and episode anticipation networks, and may lead to emotional distress, reduced self-confidence, and even physical symptoms that in turn can exacerbate procrastination. The aim of this proposed study is to investigate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for universi

Δ9-THC reduces reward-related brain activity in healthy adults.

RATIONALE: Greater availability of cannabis in the USA has raised concerns about adverse effects of the drug, including possible amotivational states. Lack of motivation may be assessed by examining acute effects of cannabinoids on reward processing. OBJECTIVES: This study examined single doses of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆9-THC; 7.5, 15 mg oral) in healthy adults using a version of the monetary incentive delay (MID) task adapted for electroencephalography (EEG; e-MID) in a within-subjects, double blind design. METHODS: Two phases of reward processing were examined: anticipation, which

Auditory-evoked response analysis in Brazilian patients with sickle cell disease.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the integrity of the peripheral and central auditory systems of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, through electrophysiological evaluation utilizing auditory evoked potentials, and comparing the results obtained in SCD patients with individuals without SCD. A total of 80 individuals were evaluated: 40 SCD patients; and 40 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was used to check neural integrity and electrophysiological thresholds, and cognitive potential (P300) to analyse the auditory selective attent

Profile of auditory information-processing deficits in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia patients exhibit abnormalities in several different auditory event-related potential (ERP) measures. It is unclear how these abnormalities relate to each other, since multiple measures are rarely acquired from the same sample. This study addressed two related questions: 1) Are specific auditory ERP measures differentially impaired in schizophrenia? 2) Do abnormalities co-aggregate within the same patients? Nine auditory ERP measures were acquired in a single testing session from 23 schizophrenia patients and 22 healthy subjects. Hierarchical oblique factor analysis revealed that

Whose loss is it? Human electrophysiological correlates of non-self reward processing.

To recognize whether another person's action results in a good or bad outcome is imperative for social learning, as well as for understanding the behavior of others in a broad context. Recent studies have reported that a scalp-surface event-related potential (ERP) called medial-frontal negativity (MFN), considered to be an index of negative reward processing, is generated when perceiving not only one's own losses, but also those of others. This suggests that the same neural mechanisms operate in monitoring one's own actions and in perceiving the consequences of the actions of others. To furthe

Blocking effects in non-conditioned goal-directed behaviour.

A great deal of our goal-directed behaviour depends on stimulus-response (S-R) associations, which can be established through conditioning or explicit instructions. For conditioned and reward maximizing behaviour, it has been shown that redundant information will no longer be taken into account once those associations have been formed ("blocking effect"). Following from this, new aspects will not be included in a pre-established association unless they improve behaviour. Opposing this, influential action control theories state that all kinds of information may be taken into account during acti

Abnormalities of brain function and their relationship to cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder patients with comorbid obstructive sleep apnea: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging evidence indicates that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is highly prevalent in major depressive disorder (MDD) and exacerbates cognitive dysfunction. However, the potential functional brain alterations in MDD patients with comorbid OSA remain underexplored in neuroimaging research. This investigation focused on functional brain modifications related to comorbid OSA in MDD, as well as to explore potential correlations with cognitive dysfunction. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-MRI), polysomnography, event-related potential (ERP), and cognitive

Cognitive event-related potentials: biomarkers of synaptic dysfunction across the stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive event-related brain potential (ERP) studies of decision-making and attention, language, and memory impairments in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are reviewed. Circumscribed lesions of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), as may be the case in individuals with amnestic MCI, generally produce altered plasticity of the late positive P600 component, with relative sparing of earlier sensory ERP components. However, as the neuropathology of AD extends to neocortical association areas, abnormalities of the P300 and N400 (and perhaps even P50) become more common. Cri

Robo2-Nrxn3 Deficiency: A Molecular Hub Linking Excitation-Inhibition Imbalance to the Pathogenesis of Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by excitation-inhibition (E-I) imbalance as a core pathophysiological feature, but its molecular underpinnings remain elusive. Susceptibility gene Roundabout2 (Robo2), which regulates E-I balance in the central nervous system, may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of SZ by contributing to this dysregulation. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a transcriptomic analysis of Robo2 in postmortem brain tissues from patients with SZ and controls using the GEO/GSE datasets. The plasma levels of Robo2 were quantified in clinical cohorts via

Perceptual hyperreactivity to auditory stimuli in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have abnormal perception of visceral stimuli; however, no study has so far investigated the perception of non-visceral stimuli in IBS. In the present study we used event-related potentials (ERP) to study whether IBS patients differed from healthy controls in processing of auditory stimuli and, if so, how this was influenced by emotions. METHODS: We compared ERPs to auditory stimuli in 40 female diarrhoea-predominant IBS patients without current psychiatric illness with those in 20 healthy controls. Tones were used as standard and target

Less distracted, more restrained: Attentional differences on the rapid serial visual presentation task in restrained eaters to food words and pictures.

Restrained eaters (RE) are individuals that regularly show disinhibited food intake despite attempts of cognitive dietary restraint. This disinhibition is often attributed to an abundance of food cues in the environment that repeatedly draw attention, although the literature remains ambiguous. One source of ambiguity is the influence of different food cue modalities (pictures, words) on attentional processes. The current study therefore investigates the effect different modalities have on attentional bias to food cues in RE (n = 70) compared to unrestrained eaters (URE; n = 74). After a standa

Efficacy of rTMS combined with cognitive training in TBI with cognition disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Post-traumatic brain injury cognitive disorder(PTBICD) is one of the common symptoms of TBI survivors, severely limiting their life and rehabilitation progress. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been shown to modulate cognition in a non-invasive manner while there are inconsistencies in previous studies. A comprehensive systematic review of rTMS treatment in patients with PTBICD is warranted. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of rTMS + cognitive training(CT) in enhancing cognitive function among PTBICD patients. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Co

Brain perfusion and VEP reactivity in occipital and parietal areas are associated to recovery from hypoxic vegetative state.

Patients in a vegetative state (VS) show a spontaneous wake-sleep-cycle but no evidence of awareness, of interaction with the environment, voluntary action, and language comprehension. The neuropathological conditions underlying VS are still not fully understood. In this retrospective study we focused on VS due to hypoxia and used SPECT, VEP and event related potentials (N100, N200, MMN, and P300) to assess differences between a group of patients moving into a permanent VS (n=13) and a group recovering from VS (n=8). The two groups were matched for age, gender, duration of illness, and on the

Acute effects of different physical activity on executive function and regulation role of beta oscillation in sedentary youth frontal region.

Chronic sedentary behavior can have a negative impact on the executive function (EF) of young people. While physical activity (PA) has been shown to improve this phenomenon, the effects of different types of PA on EF vary. In this study, we compared the effects of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) (60-70% HRmax, 30 min), body weight training (BWT) (2 sets tabata, 20 min), and mind-body exercise (MBE) (2 sets Yang style shadowboxing, 20 min) on EF in 59 sedentary youth (n = 59, age = 20.36 ± 1.78, BMI = 24.91 ± 1.82, P>0.05) to identify the optimal dose of PA for improving EF.
