Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a rare complication of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, typically presenting with a combination of painful vesicular lesions in the ear, facial nerve palsy, and hearing loss. Early diagnosis and antiviral therapy are critical in minimizing long-term sequelae, such as persistent facial weakness and hearing impairment. This case highlights the importance of prompt recognition and treatment in older patients, particularly those with pre-existing hearing difficulties. An 87-year-old female presented with a 2-week history of painful, blister-like lesions on t

Seeing facial speech plays a crucial role in allowing listeners to understand a person's speech. Since the COVID pandemic's outbreak and during the pandemic, the use of facial speech became more difficult because most people routinely wore masks to prevent infection. This study investigates whether and how wearing a mask alters reliance on facial speech for audiovisual speech perception. In this cross-sectional study, we compared the task performance of Japanese young adults in audiovisual speech recognition (i.e., the McGurk effect) and lip-reading between prepandemic and postpandemic groups.

BACKGROUND: Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) results from mutations in the TGFBR1 or TGFBR2 genes and is known to cause aggressive cardiovascular disease, including aortic aneurysms and dissections at an early age. Currently, craniofacial, skeletal, and cardiovascular findings play an important role in early recognition of the disease. While many patients do have recognizable cutaneous features of LDS, little information about associated skin findings has been reported.
OBSERVATIONS: Four unrelated patients with LDS due to a mutation in the TGFBR2 gene were observed to have numerous facial milia. A

Person-related variation has been identified in many socio-cognitive domains, and there is evidence for links between certain personality traits and individual emotion recognition. Some studies, utilizing the menstrual cycle as a hormonal model, attempted to demonstrate that hormonal fluctuations could predict variations in emotion recognition, but with merely inconsistent findings. Remarkably, the interplay between hormone fluctuations and other person-related factors that could potentially influence emotion recognition remains understudied. In the current study, we examined if the interactio

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare hereditable disorder of connective tissue caused by mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene FBN1. Timely diagnosis of MFS is essential to prevent life-threatening cardiovascular complications; nevertheless it can be difficult owing to the phenotypic variability of the syndrome. No clear quantitative definition of facial abnormalities associated with MFS is available. The aim of this study was to improve the definition of the facial phenotype associated with MFS and to verify the usefulness of a 3D noninvasive quantitative approach for its early recognition. 3D facial

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma surgery poses a significant challenge for hearing and facial function preservation. Prophylactic nimodipine has been studied as a pharmacologic strategy to protect cranial nerve function after hearing preservation surgery, but it has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study aimed to assess the role of prophylactic nimodipine in promoting hearing and facial function following vestibular schwannoma surgery and to evaluate the dose-response relationship between nimodipine administration and patient outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis on a c

Recognising and responding appropriately to emotions is critical to adaptive psychological functioning. Psychopathic traits (e.g. callous, manipulative, impulsive, antisocial) are related to differences in recognition and response when emotion is conveyed through facial expressions and language. Use of emotional music stimuli represents a promising approach to improve our understanding of the specific emotion processing difficulties underlying psychopathic traits because it decouples recognition of emotion from cues directly conveyed by other people (e.g. facial signals). In Experiment 1, part

Deviation from a normal facial shape and symmetry can arise from numerous sources, including physical injury and congenital birth defects. Such abnormalities can have important aesthetic and functional consequences. Furthermore, in clinical genetics distinctive facial appearances are often associated with clinical or genetic diagnoses; the recognition of a characteristic facial appearance can substantially narrow the search space of potential diagnoses for the clinician. Unusual patterns of facial movement and expression can indicate disturbances to normal mechanical functioning or emotional a

Facial reconstruction is used in forensic anthropology to recreate the face from unknown human skeletal remains, and to elucidate the antemortem facial appearance. This requires accurate assessment of the skull (age, sex, ancestry, etc.) and thickness data. However, additional information is required to reconstruct the face as the information obtained from the skull is limited. Here, we aimed to examine the information from the skull that is required for accurate facial reconstruction. The human facial profile is classified into 3 shapes: straight, convex, and concave. These facial profiles fa

Acromegaly, caused by excessive growth hormone secretion from a pituitary tumor, is associated with characteristic acral changes and multiple comorbidities. Changes in physical appearance, particularly involving the face and extremities, are the most common triggers for the diagnosis of acromegaly. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread mask wearing in medical settings may interfere with the recognition of acromegaly by obscuring key facial features such as the lips and nose. We report the case of a 74-year-old woman referred for poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (DM). She exhibited disprop

Several molecular and phenotypic algorithms exist that establish genotype-phenotype correlations, including facial recognition tools. However, no unified framework that investigates both facial data and other phenotypic data directly from individuals exists. We developed PhenoScore: an open-source, artificial intelligence-based phenomics framework, combining facial recognition technology with Human Phenotype Ontology data analysis to quantify phenotypic similarity. Here we show PhenoScore's ability to recognize distinct phenotypic entities by establishing recognizable phenotypes for 37 of 40 i…

Background: Different drugs damage the frontal cortices, particularly the prefrontal areas involved in both emotional and cognitive functions, with a consequence of decoding emotion deficits for people with substance abuse. The present study aimed to explore the cognitive impairments in drug abusers through facial, body and disgust emotion recognition, expanding the investigation of emotions processing, measuring accuracy and response velocity. Methods: We enrolled 13 addicted to cocaine and 12 alcohol patients attending treatment services in Italy, comparing them with 33 matched controls. Fac

Self-face recognition, a hallmark of self-awareness, depends on 'off-line' stored information about one's face and 'on-line' multisensory-motor face-related cues. The brain mechanisms of how on-line sensory-motor processes affect off-line neural self-face representations are unknown. This study used 3D virtual reality to create a 'virtual mirror' in which participants saw an avatar's face moving synchronously with their own face movements. Electroencephalographic (EEG) analysis during virtual mirror exposure revealed mu oscillations in sensory-motor cortex signalling on-line congruency between

Preliminary studies suggest there are differences in the facial expressions produced by autistic and non-autistic individuals. However, it is unclear what specifically is different, whether such differences remain after controlling for facial morphology and alexithymia, and whether production differences relate to perception differences. Therefore, we (1) comprehensively compared the spatiotemporal and kinematic properties of autistic and non-autistic expressions after controlling these factors, and (2) examined the contribution of production-related variables to emotion perception. We used fa

Emotional and social cognitive deficits were investigated in a group of 24 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 24 healthy controls. Empathic and visual emotional responses were collected, analyzed and correlated to brain structural imaging data by means of: (i) a pictorial matching-to-sample task with facial and non-facial stimuli; (ii) self-reported questionnaires for cognitive and affective emotional components, and alexithymia; (iii) in-depth assessment of cognitive functions. Results indicated that visual processing of faces in MCI individuals did not benefit from fearful

This cross-sectional observational study examined the relationship between psychological factors and multimodal emotion recognition abilities in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), introducing a humanoid robot as an innovative assessment modality. Sixty adults undergoing dialysis and awaiting renal transplantation (63.3 % male; mean age = 53.95 years, range 20-80) completed three emotion recognition tasks based on Ekman facial expressions, dynamic video clips, and emotional displays performed by the NAO humanoid robot, together with validated measures of alexithymia (TAS-20), anxiety (

BACKGROUND: Some patients with prosopagnosia have covert recognition, meaning that they retain some familiarity or knowledge of facial identity of which they are not aware.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that prosopagnosic patients with right occipitotemporal lesions and impaired face perception lack covert processing, whereas patients with associative prosopagnosia and bilateral anterior temporal lesions possess it.
METHODS: Eight patients with prosopagnosia were tested with a battery of four face recognition tests to determine their ability to discriminate between famous and unknown fac

Introduction Facial nerve stimulation (FNS) is a complication in cochlear implant (CI) when the electrical current escapes from the cochlea to the nearby facial nerve. Different management to reduce its effects are available, although changes might result in a less-than-ideal fitting for the CI user, eventually reducing speech perception. Objective To verify the etiologies that cause FNS, to identify strategies in managing FNS, and to evaluate speech recognition in patients who present FNS. Methods Retrospective study approved by the Ethical Board of the Institution. From the files of a CI

Schizophrenia is characterized by social cognitive impairments that predict functioning. Social cognitive training aims to target these impairments. Although it can improve the targeted social cognitive domain, it is unclear if the training generalizes to non-targeted domains and to functioning, with lasting effects. This randomized controlled trial examined the effect of a targeted facial affect recognition training program, Training of Affect Recognition (TAR), in persons with schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia were randomized to receive treatment as usual and TAR (n = 24) or trea
