The development of midazolam has been a nice addition to the list of drugs used for preprocedure or preoperative conscious sedation. Like other CNS depressants, it has potentially serious adverse effects, but with careful use, provides the practitioner with another drug useful for easing a patient through a difficult procedure or surgery.

A Swiss family with hereditary articular chondrocalcinosis is described. Chondrocalcinosis was found on x-rays of five cases in two generations. In four there were recurrent attacks of pseudogout; in all observations the first rheumatic symptoms started early in the fourth decade. There was no history of consanguinity and the mode of inheritance was autosomal dominant, in agreement with most of the other familial pedigrees reported in the literature.

Family physicians can encourage disaster planning and mock disaster exercises in their community. If involved in an actual disaster, the family physician can be helpful as a triage officer in emergency, in initial resuscitation, in minor treatment, in discharging stable patients, and in counselling victims of post-traumatic shock syndrome. The key to effective performance is being prepared beforehand to cope with the stress and confusion of the incident. Use of laboratory and diagnostic imaging must be curtailed until all severely injured patients are treated.

A family study of hidradenitis suppurativa was undertaken based on 26 subjects with the disease. The probands were obtained from Hospital Activity Analysis (HAA) records for a three year period (1980 to 1983) and by direct referral from hospital specialists over a six month period (1983 to 1984). A four generation family with postaxial polydactyly of hands and feet and dental anomalies is reported. Lower and upper incisors were abnormal in shape and number. Additional findings were prominent ear anthelices, hypoplastic and dysplastic nails and mild shortness of stature. Inheritance was dominant with variable expression. It is proposed that the family presents the syndrome of acrofacial dysostosis described by Weyers in 1952. To differentiate it from other acrofacial dysostoses, we suggest naming the condition acrodental dysostosis.

Clinical, radiological and scintigraphic studies and HLA type assessment were performed in 38 subjects, constituting all the first-degree members of three generations of the families of six patients affected with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
