Soilless farming system design impacts the diversity and composition of microbiota.

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA), including soilless farming systems, is expanding to improve food security and resource efficiency. However, little is known about how different soilless farming system designs influence microbial populations that may be relevant to plant health and food safety. This study investigated the effects of soilless system type on microbial load and bacterial community composition in nutrient solution and on bok choy leaves over two growing cycles. Soilless systems, including deep water culture (DWC), Kratky (KR), nutrient film technique (NFT), ebb and flow (E

Promises and Perspectives of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Companion and Farm Animals.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are heterogeneous, multipotent cell populations that have become one of the most extensively investigated cell types in veterinary regenerative medicine. They can be isolated from a wide range of adult and perinatal tissues and have attracted considerable interest because of their immunomodulatory properties, broad secretory activity, and potential to promote tissue repair. However, increasing evidence indicates that MSCs should not be regarded as a uniform therapeutic product, as their biological behaviour is influenced by tissue source, donor characteristics,

Estimating on-farm genotypic performance and variability using ranking data.

Our scalable two-step method estimates genotypic performance and genetic parameters from ranking data, producing reliable results comparable to quantitative analyses, enabling the integration of ranking data into breeding pipelines. Plant breeding research has chiefly relied on on-station experiments to evaluate varietal performance. Nevertheless, these trials often fail to represent on-farm growing conditions and farmers' preferences, potentially leading to poorly defined breeding targets. Recent work has demonstrated the potential of using on-farm verification trials combined with ranking da

First detection of African swine fever in a swine farm in Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious, high-consequence transboundary animal disease that poses a critical threat to global swine production and agricultural economics. Since its emergence in China in 2018, ASF has spread to over 20 Asia-Pacific countries, causing significant economic disruption. While Taiwan previously detected ASF virus several times in dead pigs drifting offshore, or in illegal pork-related products brought by international tourists and inspected at airport and seaport border controls, no local domestic swine farm had tested positive before this Oct

Anthelmintic stewardship: An essential step towards sustainable dairy farming.

Helminth infections in grazing dairy cattle can lead to asymptomatic infections, subclinical- or clinical disease. Whether the course of infection leads to disease depends on various factors, leading to a broad variety of prevalence rates and severity of disease between farms, between groups of cattle in a farm and between individual animals. Production losses related to helminth infections, the difficulty in diagnosing helminth disease and the wide availability and high efficacy of anthelmintics have led to overreliance on these products. Combined with management and other factors, this resul…

Detection of flaviviruses in mosquitoes from a livestock farm in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Orthoflaviviruses constitute a diverse genus within the Flaviviridae family, comprising over 70 enveloped, single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses that pose significant global health threats. Yellow fever virus (YFV) remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with suboptimal vaccination coverage and a persistent risk of transmission. Understanding the circulation of local orthoflaviviruses in mosquito vectors is crucial for disease surveillance and prevention strategies. Adult female mosquitoes were collected from the University of Ibadan's dairy and teaching farms between June…

History of Shrimp Farming and the Main Viral and Bacterial Diseases in Mexico.

Shrimp farming is probably the most recent animal production activity generating high-quality animal protein, jobs, and economic revenue for many developing and middle-income countries worldwide. Despite the steady growth over the last two decades, aquaculture production has recently seen a decreased growth rate, with infectious diseases being a culprit. Mexico is a major farmed shrimp producer in the world, with the industry generating about USD 1 billion each year and providing jobs for those in vulnerable social sectors. Nonetheless, various viral and bacterial diseases have affected produc

Microbial Aerosols in Livestock Farming Environment: A Threat That Cannot Be Ignored.

Under modern intensive and large-scale animal farming practices, the high animal density and confined spaces have progressively elevated the risk of disease transmission while complicating epidemic prevention and control. Current estimates indicate that over 70% of animal disease risks stem from viral infections, primarily transmitted via aerosol pathways. Such aerosol-mediated transmission not only triggers concentrated disease outbreaks within farms but also endangers farm workers and adjacent environments, thereby amplifying prevention challenges and substantially impeding the sustainable d…

Rabies Cluster Among Steers on a Dairy Farm - Minnesota, 2024.

Rabies clusters in domestic livestock are rare but can result in human exposure and economic loss for farmers. During a 4-week period in May 2024, five of 35 steers on a Minnesota dairy farm developed neurologic signs consistent with rabies. Three clinically ill steers were euthanized, and brain specimens were submitted for rabies testing. Direct fluorescent antibody testing and whole genome sequencing confirmed rabies virus (North Central Skunk variant) in all three steers. After identification of the first two rabid steers, the remaining animals were quarantined for 120 days and vaccinated a

Associations Between Delousing Practices and Pasteurellosis in Farmed Atlantic Salmon.

Infections with bacteria of the genus Pasteurella have increased in occurrence in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms in Norway since 2018. This increase coincides with increased use of non-medicinal treatments against the parasitic salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in the farms. Here, we analysed the statistical association between the use of non-medicinal delousing methods and pasteurellosis in salmon farming in western Norway, from 2018 to 2023. The analysed data covered 1161 production cycles from 356 farming localities, in which Pasteurella was detected in 166 production cycles from …

Development of on-farm AMF inoculum production for sustainable agriculture in Senegal.

The integration of endomycorrhizal fungi into agricultural practices as inoculum offers the potential to improve plant productivity while reducing reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers, which are not only economically costly but also detrimental to the environment. Mycorrhizal fungi play a crucial role in facilitating plant access to essential mineral elements (such as Phosphorus, Potassium, etc.) and water, particularly in soils characterized by arid and semi-arid conditions. where these resources are often limited. Despite the obvious advantages, the development of arbuscular mycorrhiza
