This report presents a case of necrotizing fasciitis following a seemingly minor injury sustained from handling a spiny plant. Despite initial primary care by a physician, the patient presented with severe septic shock and necrotizing fasciitis of the hand, necessitating emergency surgical intervention. The use of scoring systems aided in the prompt recognition of the condition. Subsequent surgery was required due to infection progression, leading to significant soft tissue defects and functional impairment. The patient underwent multiple reconstructive procedures, including placement of dermi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in the treatment of odontogenic cervical Necrotizing fasciitis (CNF).
METHODS: Sixteen cases of odontogenic cervical necrotizing fasciitis were randomly divided into observation group and control group after routine debridement and disinfection. The patients in the control group were treated with drainage tube and regular dressing changes, while those in the observation group were treated with NPWT. The therapeutic effects of the 2 groups were compared.
RESULTS: The frequency of operation, treatment len

The timely diagnosis of necrotic fasciitis (NF) - an extremely rare fatal complication of acute appendicitis is difficult due to the variability of the clinical picture and depends on the degree of inflammatory changes in the appendix wall, localization, age, reactivity, and the presence or absence of comorbidities. It is characterized by high mortality rate, associated with the rapid progression of the disease with the development of septic shock and multiple organ failure. A clinical case of necrotic fasciitis of the right lower limb without damage of the anterior abdominal wall, secondary t

Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a very rare disease with a mortality rate of 10% to 20%, requiring rapid diagnosis and active treatment. The most common causative organism is Group A β-hemolytic Streptococcus, and trauma, operative incisions, pre-existing ulcers, or injection sites may be predisposing factors for periorbital NF. In this study, the subject, who had a medical history of diabetes mellitus and chronic liver disease, developed periorbital NF suddenly and without any specific triggering factors, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified in a necrotic tissue biopsy. Klebsiel

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, potentially fatal, infective complication that can occur after surgery. Diagnosis is still difficult and mainly based on clinical data. Only a prompt pharmacological and surgical therapy can avoid dramatic consequences. There are few reports regarding NF as a complication after aesthetic surgical procedures, and a systematic review still lacks.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have performed a systematic review of English literature on PubMed, covering a period of 30 years. Keywords used were "necrotising fasciitis" matched with "aesthetic surgery

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an infection that spreads along the fascial planes, causing subcutaneous tissue death characterized by rapid progression, systemic toxicity, and even death. NF often appears as a red, hot, painful, and swollen wound with an ill-defined border. As the infective process continues, local pain is replaced by numbness or analgesia. As the disease process continues, the skin initially becomes pale, then mottled and purple, and finally, gangrenous. The ability of NF to move rapidly along fascial planes and cause tissue necrosis is secondary to its polymicrobial compositi

We discuss the successful saving of a male neonate with necrotizing fasciitis of the chest following a hot fomentation of the umbilicus with exposure of the ribs and the pleural space on the right side. He recovered 5 weeks after admission. We stressed the need to recognize necrotizing fasciitis extending from the upper anterior abdominal wall to the chest following hot fomentation of the umbilicus. The need for multidisciplinary cooperation for excellent outcome is very important, that is, neonatologist, medical microbiologist, and plastic and chest surgeons.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, severe, life-threatening soft tissue infection. Rapid progression and systemic illness are recognized features of the condition in which a high index of suspicion is essential to prompt early diagnosis and ensure a favourable outcome. Management necessitates immediate and aggressive surgical and antimicrobial treatment. This case report describes the rare presentation of facial necrotizing fasciitis with orbital involvement that required initial and subsequent widespread surgical resection within the first 24 h of admission, including unilateral enucleation of

BACKGROUND: Perineal gangrene was first described in healthy, young males more than two and one-half centuries ago. This disease, referred to commonly as Fournier gangrene, was marked by rapid progression, high mortality, and unknown etiology. In the last century the pathologic processes were described and accounts of perineal gangrene were reported in females. This disease still demonstrates a male predominance, but mortality does not demonstrate a gender predilection.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a Bartholin abscess progressing to necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum in a 53-year-old

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcal (GAS) necrotizing fasciitis is a critical emergency. Patients with necrotizing fasciitis principally present to emergency departments (EDs), but most studies are focused on hospitalized patients.
OBJECTIVE: An ED patient-based retrospective study was conducted to investigate the clinical characteristics, associated factors, and outcomes of GAS necrotizing fasciitis in the ED.
METHODS: Patients visiting the ED from January 2005 through December 2011 with the diagnosis of GAS necrotizing fasciitis were enrolled. All patients with the diagnosis of noninvasive s

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening dermatosis with an acute clinical course. It represents a severe soft tissue dermal-hypodermal infection of polymicrobic nature. Often it is complicated by systemic deterioration, multi-organ dysfunction and lethal outcome. Herein, a clinical case of an immunocompetent patient with necrotizing fasciitis of the lower extremity is presented. A short overview of the recent achievements in diagnostic verification and therapeutic approaches of the disease is laid out.

We report a 50-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who presented with a painful, swollen right leg. He had also experienced right flank pain for 1 week prior to admission. Physical examination was notable for tenderness over the right flank. The right leg was diffusely swollen and exquisitely tender to touch, with palpable crepitance. Laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis and pyuria. Computed tomography showed a right ureteral stone with hydronephrosis and characteristic findings of emphysematous pyelonephritis. Furthermore, a right perirenal gas-forming abscess with extensi

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck is a rare, life-threatening, soft tissue infection rapidly involving superficial fat and fascia with necrosis of the overlying skin. If septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein complicates a parapharyngeal abscess, the clinical condition is referred to as Lemierre syndrome, also known as post-anginal sepsis. A lethal case of necrotizing fasciitis of the neck is herewith reported that developed following tooth extraction and was complicated by thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and superior vena cava in an elderly diabetic patient.

We first report a case of patient with refractory dermatomyositis (DM) who successfully treated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha blocker, etanercept and developed necrotizing fasciitis (NF) after the use of it. NF was diagnosed early by MRI and managed with antimicrobial therapy and timely debridement of necrotic tissue with favorable outcome. We suggest that etanercept can be a useful therapeutic agent in patients with DM refractory to steroid and immunosuppressive agents and NF may occur in DM in association with etanercept therapy. We also suggest that management strategies for early diagno

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal infection involving rapidly progressive, widespread necrosis of the superficial fascia.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this collective review is to review modern concepts of the treatment and diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis.
DISCUSSION: Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by widespread necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and the fascia. Although the pathogenesis of necrotizing fasciitis is still open to speculation, the rapid and destructive clinical course of necrotizing fasciitis is thought to be due to multibacterial symbiosis.
