OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a lay provider-delivered, brief intervention to reduce problem drinking and related family consequences among men in Kenya. The 5-session intervention combines behavioral activation (BA) and motivational interviewing (MI). It integrates family-related material explicitly and addresses central cultural factors through gender transformative strategies.
METHOD: A nonconcurrent multiple-baseline design was used. We initiated treatment with 9 men ages 30 to 48 who were fathers and screened positive for problem drinking; the median Alcohol Use Identification Test score was 17

A nonrandom, nonclinical t-test comparison study of 30 homosexual and 30 heterosexual men was conducted to describe their memories of their fathers' behaviors toward them. Previous studies had identified the "classical pattern," that is, the fathers of homosexual men were considered cold, hostile, and distant. Those studies were sparked by Freudian theory which postulated the same. Therefore, a brief revisitation has been conducted. Again, the findings supported the earlier, that is, the homosexual men recalled their fathers as more rejecting and less loving than the heterosexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Male involvement in maternal and child health is a practice wherein fathers and male community members actively participate in caring for women and supporting their family to access better health services. There is positive association between male involvement and better maternal and child health outcomes. However, the practice is not always practiced optimally, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where women may not have access to economic resources and decision-making power.
AIM: This study investigates how key stakeholders within the health system in Uganda engage

Mothers' and fathers' reports of marital conflicts in the home were obtained (n = 1,638 and 1,281 conflicts, respectively), including conflicts in front of the children (n = 580 and 377, respectively). Participants were 116 families with children 8 to 16 years old (M = 10.82 years, SD = 2.17; 58 boys, 58 girls). Children's emotional responses indicated distinctions between distressing conflict tactics (i.e., threat, personal insult, verbal hostility, defensiveness, nonverbal hostility, marital withdrawal, physical distress) and those that increased their emotional security (i.e., calm discussi

Erythromelalgia is an acrosyndrome characterized by paroxysmal manifestations associating erythema, local sensations of warmth and pain which improve with exposure to cold. Childhood forms, exceptional and usually primary, are quite severe and particularly resistant to treatment. The search for a causal agent is most often negative and the pathogenesis remains to be determined. We report a case of erythromelalgia observed in a 4-year-old girl, her father and her younger sister. This case was particular due to an association with mercury poisoning. The symptomatology was improved after differen

The aim was to assess symptoms consistent with posttraumatic stress (PTS; cognitive intrusions, avoidance, arousal) related to the child's illness, and generic distress (anxiety, depression) in parents of childhood cancer patients. Outcomes were compared to normative and relevant reference data, and analysed for their dependence on time passed since diagnosis. Swedish parents (266 mothers, 208 fathers) were recruited at two centres. Data from a clinical sample of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients and parents of healthy children were used for comparison. The Impact of Events Scale (

STUDY QUESTION: Is fecundity, measured as time to pregnancy (TTP), associated with mortality in parents?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Prolonged TTP is associated with increased mortality in both mothers and fathers in a dose-response manner.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Several studies have linked both male and female fecundity to mortality. In women, infertility has been linked to several diseases, but studies suggest that the underlying conditions, rather than infertility, increase mortality.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A prospective cohort study was carried out on 18 796 pregnant couples, in which the pr

BACKGROUND: Parental characteristics and practices predict borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in children. However, it is difficult to disentangle whether these effects are genetically or environmentally mediated. The present study examines the contributions of genetic and environmental influences by comparing the effects of familial risk factors (i.e. parental psychopathology and borderline traits, maladaptive parenting, marital discord) on child BPD traits in genetically related (biological) and non-related (adoptive) families.
METHODS: Data are from 409 adoptive and 208 biologi

Eye contact is crucial for the formation and maintenance of social relationships, and plays a key role in facilitating a strong parent-child bond. However, the precise neural and affective mechanisms through which eye contact impacts on parent-child relationships remain elusive. We introduce a task to assess parents' neural and affective responses to prolonged direct and averted gaze coming from their own child, and an unfamiliar child and adult. While in the scanner, 79 parents (n = 44 mothers and n = 35 fathers) were presented with prolonged (16-38 s) videos of their own child, an unfamiliar

The authors describe the case of a 17-year-old girl who suffered from end-stage liver failure due to chronic autoimmune hepatitis. Liver failure was complicated by severe portal hypertension, hypersplenism and refractory ascites. Liver transplantation was indicated. She was listed for cadaveric whole liver transplantation, but her infrequent blood group (B) increased waiting time. Her condition deteriorated to Child C liver failure and living related liver transplant was considered. Her father was compatible and proposed himself for donation. Right lobe procurement was decided in order to prov

INTRODUCTION: Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in pediatric urology may generally cause distress and pain in children. As a result, it may have a negative effect on adult and child behaviors. The anxiety, depression levels or distress and fear status caused by recurrent diseases or repetitive medical interventions in adult patients or the parents of pediatric patients have been investigated previously.
OBJECTIVE: To the best of our knowledge, we have not found a study evaluating the effects of primary or recurrent pediatric urological operations on parental anxiety. Our main aim

The study examined the effect of maternal and paternal smoking during pregnancy on the child's inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms, and the risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Generalized estimating equations, incorporating data from multiple informants (parents and teachers), was used to evaluate levels of ADHD as a function of parental smoking. The risk for ADHD, ODD, and comorbid ADHD and ODD was evaluated using polytomous logistic regression. We found that maternal, but not paternal, smoking was significantly asso
