Acute epiglottitis is an infectious disease causing a severe respiratory distress. Any attempt to move the child in the horizontal position or to examine his throat can result in cardiac arrest. Examination by thoracoscopy, using flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope, was performed in 43 patients with pleural effusion according to our reported method. In these patients, 14 cases were diagnosed as tuberculous pleuritis. These 14 cases were investigated with respect to clinical and thoracoscopic findings. Their mean age was 38.1 years, and 11 cases were younger than 50 years old (78.5%). The male:female ratio was 2/1. We developed a fiberscopic device for estimating vocal fold stiffness in vivo. A small plastic tube with a hole in the side was connected to the forceps channel of the fiberscope and used as an aspiration tube under constant negative pressure. A basic experiment revealed that the maximum distance at which the vocal fold was sucked to the hole depended on the stiffness of the tissue. Thirty-six patients with menorrhagia were treated with a technique for laser destruction of the endometrium in which the end of the fiberoptic guide of the Nd:Yag laser is not allowed to come in contact with the endometrium. The results were excellent in 93.9% of the 33 patients followed over three months. We found that fibreoptic bronchoscopy was a useful, simple, safe and accurate method in the diagnosis of inhalation injury, determining the type, the site and the extent of damage sustained. The most common mucosal damage was erythema and oedema of the supraglottic and glottic tissues, though in a few cases more severe and extensive injury was seen. Death seemed to be determined largely by the extent of skin burn but since there did not appear to be a close relationship between the severity of skin burn and the presence of inhalation burn, we suggest that the two types of injuries be evaluated

Difficult intubations are more common in otolaryngological practice than any other branch of medicine or surgery. The majority of these are predictable. Telescopic oral endoscopy is an effective aid in the construction and modification of a speech aid prosthesis. The method is noninvasive and easy to perform, permits the prosthodontist to achieve the goal of functional effectiveness in prosthesis construction while keeping the weight and size of the pharyngeal extension at a minimum, decreases the number and length of patient visits required for modification, and when coupled to a fiberoptic teaching arm or a video camera and recording system, it becomes an excellent aid in teaching, patient education and orientation, and record keeping.
