Houston hurricane Harvey health (Houston-3H) study: assessment of allergic symptoms and stress after hurricane Harvey flooding.

BACKGROUND: In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey caused unprecedented flooding across the greater Houston area. Given the potential for widespread flood-related exposures, including mold and sewage, and the emotional and mental toll caused by the flooding, we sought to evaluate the short- and long-term impact of flood-related exposures on the health of Houstonians. Our objectives were to assess the association of flood-related exposures with allergic symptoms and stress among Houston-area residents at two time points: within approximately 30 days (T1) and 12 months (T2) after Hurricane Harvey's la

Assessment and mitigation of tangible flood damages driven by climate change in a tropical city: Hat Yai Municipality, southern Thailand.

Climate change-induced floods in tropical urban areas have presented a serious global challenge because of failed conventional stormwater management practices. This research aims to develop a comprehensive methodological framework for flood damage estimation and mitigation, particularly in a tropical urban city. In this study, interdisciplinary fields were integrated through statistical downscaling, hydrologic-hydraulic modeling, and the development of flood damage curves. Relationships between tangible flood damage and flood-borne outbreak with flood depths were elucidated to predict future d…

Flood analysis in mixed-urban areas reflecting interactions with the complete water cycle through coupled hydrologic-hydraulic modelling.

The potential devastating effects of urban flooding have given high importance to thorough understanding and management of water movement within catchments, and computer modelling tools have found widespread use for this purpose. The state-of-the-art in urban flood modelling is the use of a coupled 1D pipe and 2D overland flow model to simultaneously represent pipe and surface flows. This method has been found to be accurate for highly paved areas, but inappropriate when land hydrology is important. The objectives of this study are to introduce a new urban flood modelling procedure that is abl

Is mosquito larval source management appropriate for reducing malaria in areas of extensive flooding in The Gambia? A cross-over intervention trial.

Larviciding to control malaria was assessed in rural areas with extensive seasonal flooding. Larval and adult mosquitoes and malaria incidence were surveyed routinely in four 100-km(2) areas either side of the Gambia River. Baseline data were collected in 2005. Microbial larvicide was applied to all water bodies by hand application with water-dispersible granular formulations and corn granules weekly from May to November in two areas in 2006 and in the other two areas in 2007 in a cross-over design. The intervention was associated with a reduction in habitats with late stage anopheline larvae

Flooding treatment of phobia to having her feet touched by physiotherapists, in a young woman with Down's syndrome and a traumatic brain injury.

This case study describes the treatment of a 32-year-old woman with Down's syndrome and a recent head injury, for phobia to treatment of her feet by physiotherapists. The phobia had the potential to severely limit rehabilitation progress in terms of the client regaining the ability to stand, assist with transfers (including to and from a car), and walk. A single session, in vivo, flooding intervention was used. The treatment resulted in a substantial change in tolerance of physiotherapists' touching of feet to the extent rehabilitation was able to proceed within the bounds of expectation had a

Identification of compounds bound to suspended solids causing sub-lethal toxic effects in Daphnia magna. A field study on re-suspended particles during river floods in Ebro River.

Identifying chemicals causing adverse effects in organisms present in water remains a challenge in environmental risk assessment. This study aimed to assess and identify toxic compounds bound to suspended solids re-suspended during a prolonged period of flushing flows in the lower part of Ebro River (NE, Spain). This area is contaminated with high amounts of organochlorine and mercury sediment wastes. Chemical characterization of suspended material was performed by solid phase extraction using a battery of non-polar and polar solvents and analyzed by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Mercury content was

Increased prescriptions for irritable bowel syndrome after the 2018 Japan Floods: a longitudinal analysis based on the Japanese National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups.

BACKGROUND: The frequency and intensity of natural disasters are increasing worldwide, which makes our understanding of disaster-related diseases more important than ever. Natural disasters cause mental stress and infectious diarrhea, but the causal relationship between disasters and a potential consequence of these conditions, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), is unreported. The 2018 Japan Floods, which took place in July 2018 was one of the largest water disasters in Japan's recorded history. We investigate the change of drug prescriptions for IBS between disaster-suffers and non-sufferers thr…

Enhanced per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in a large estuary-coastal sea continuum shortly after a spring flood event.

The environmental behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the estuarine and coastal zone remains poorly understood, especially under extreme hydrological conditions. Here, we investigate the seasonal distribution, source apportionment, ecological risk, and transport flux of PFAS along the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) - northern South China Sea (NSCS) continuum during the exceptionally wet year of 2024, which included 13 officially documented flood events. Two field campaigns were conducted following a major spring flood and during the subsequent post-flood period, with 32 target

Cypress (Taxodium) Knee Seasonal Growth Is Stimulated by Flood Water Levels and Constrained by the Tree Dormant Season: A 14-Year Study.

Cypress knees are woody root structures of cypress trees (Taxodium spp.) that curiously protrude upwards out of the ground. To better understand knee growth characteristics, 30 knees in a southwestern Florida depressional cypress swamp were measured monthly for 14 years (2012-2025) for tip growth. Substantial knee growth, when it occurred, was during the months of June through September, but only when the month coincided with water levels above ground. Regardless of water levels or the canopy's leafiness, knee growth rates consistently declined in October, and knee growth was rarely detectable

Exposure to prenatal maternal stress is associated with epigenetic age acceleration and altered cell composition in the placenta: The QF2011 Queensland Flood Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) in utero has been associated with several adverse perinatal outcomes, such as pre-term birth and perturbed cognitive development. As the interface between the fetal and maternal compartments during pregnancy, the placenta has been postulated to play a role in this process. We hypothesized that placental DNA methylation (DNAme) may be altered in association with natural disaster-mediated PNMS. METHODS: Pooled placental samples from the Queensland Flood Study, or QF2011, cohort (n = 105) were processed for assessment of DNAme using the Ill

Schwertmannite maintains effective stabilization of arsenic in flooded paddy soil: Insights from a two-season rice experiment and underlying mechanisms.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) tends to accumulate elevated levels of arsenic (As) in grain, threatening food safety and human health. Schwertmannite (Sch), with its high As adsorption capacity, has been suggested as a potential soil amendment to mitigate As accumulation in paddy soils. However, due to the metastable state of schwertmannite and the high iron reduction potential of paddy soil, it remains unclear whether schwertmannite can maintain a persistent stabilizing effect on As, as well as the underlying mechanisms of such stabilization. In this study, two-season pot experiments with rice were c

Cumulative effects of severe childhood maltreatment and flood-related residential displacement on PTSD risk among pregnant women in southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are at high risk of developing adverse mental health outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), following climate-related disasters. Childhood maltreatment (CM) may be a pre-existing risk factor that increases vulnerability to PTSD in women exposed to flood-related consequences. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between CM and PTSD symptoms, residential displacement due to flooding and PTSD symptoms, and to test whether these exposures interact to increase the risk for PTSD symptoms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This cross-sectional included 259 wome

Exploring hydrological controls on dissolved organic carbon export dynamics in a typical flash flood catchment using a process-based model.

The dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export from headwater catchments are of critical importance for the global carbon balance and are driven by complex runoff processes. Most previous studies have used statistical relationships between runoff and DOC concentration to estimate DOC export dynamics. Thus, the coupling mechanisms between runoff generation and DOC export dynamics at the process level were obscured in the fitting parameters and have rarely been addressed. In this study, high-frequency (hourly) discharge and DOC export from a typical flash flood experimental headwater catc
