Ankle arthroscopy has evolved over the past decade to address many acute and chronic injuries in the athlete. Although similar outcomes are reported with established open procedures, arthroscopic intervention confers the advantages of decreased postoperative morbidity and earlier return to sports activity. Arthroscopic procedures for the foot are evolving; however, most are considered investigational at this time.

The records of sixty patients who had a malignant melanoma of the foot or ankle were reviewed retrospectively to determine the clinical features, prognostic factors, and distinguishing characteristics. Seventeen patients with symbrachydactyly of the foot are described. Eccrine cancers are uncommon, but potentially recurrent, metastatic and fatal. Rarely, they are primary foot lesions. The literature records 46 foot cases, with age and sex given for 41. Attritional and traumatic injuries to the tendons around the foot and ankle are not uncommon. Treatment of overuse-type injuries (tendinitis) remains straightforward. However, surgical treatment of peroneal subluxation, Achilles tendon ruptures, and posterior tibial tendon insufficiency remains somewhat controversial. Within 2 weeks the authors saw two patients with deep burns of their feet caused by foot spas. Both devices had been used according to the manufacturers' instructions and had been approved by The Danish Electric Material Control. Examination however showed that the bottom plate of these devices reached unacceptably high temperatures that far exceeded the stipulation for approval. As a consequence of this report, the rules for approval of foot spas in Denmark have been changed, as well as a warning to persons at risk that should be included in the directions for use in the future.

Fibrous dysplasia is a benign, nonfamilial disorder of the skeleton, characterized by expanding fibroosseous lesions occupying single or multiple bones with possible extraskeletal anomalies. Fibrous dysplasia begins in childhood and is not usually recognized until adolescence or adulthood. When fibrous dysplasia affects the foot, it is often the expression of the polystotic form of the disease. This paper will review the pathology of the disease and monostotic involvement of the first metatarsal.

The use of Hoffmann external fixation in the treatment of ankle and foot trauma in 26 patients is reviewed. There were 21 males and five females, ranging in age from 14 to 56 years.
