The regeneration of newt limbs deformed in nature.

The regeneration of abnormal limbs from a wild newt population was examined. The abnormalities were: mirror symmetrical reduplications of digit parts, deformed wrists, or limbs with supernumerary digits. Normal regeneration resulted after amputation of the abnormal parts, regardless of the original deformity. The results suggest that the abnormalities are probably the result of local trauma to the limbs.

Single-stage talectomy and tibiocalcaneal arthrodesis as a salvage of severe, rigid equinovarus deformity.

Seven adult males with rigid, severe equinovarus deformities underwent single-stage corrective surgery. The procedure included extensive soft tissue release, talectomy and tibiocalcaneal, calcaneocuboid, and tibionavicular fusion. All seven patients fused successfully at an average of 3.5 months with a plantigrade foot. All feet were stiff and had an average of 3.5 cm limb length discrepancy. All of the patients were satisfied with the surgery and would choose to have the procedure again. This small series represents one method of achieving a plantigrade foot in patients with severe, rigid equ

Pedal manifestations of musculoskeletal disease in children.

Musculoskeletal disease presenting in a child's foot is usually an isolated mechanical problem rather than part of a systemic disease; however, the pediatric flatfoot may be a more serious problem, caused by tarsal coalitions, congenital vertical talus, or part of a syndrome. The most common congenital pediatric foot deformities, including flatfoot, talipes equinovarus, digital anomalies, and osteochondritis, have characteristic and easily identifiable features that should be familiar to the practitioner. In this article, these deformities are described as they occur in isolation and as the re…

Assessment of striatal & postural deformities in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Though striatal and postural deformities are known to occur commonly in atypical Parkinsonism patients, these may also be seen in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). These are frequently misdiagnosed as joint or orthopaedic pathology leading to unnecessary investigations. This study was conducted to observe the various striatal and postural deformities among patients with PD in India. METHODS: This study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching institute in north# India. Seventy consecutive patients with PD diagnosed as per the modified UK Brain Bank criteria wer

Mazabraud's Syndrome - A Diagnosis Commonly Missed.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-axial foot polydactyly has been termed as mirror foot, otherwise known as diplopodia. Association of a hypoplastic trapezoid shaped tibia makes the condition extremely uncommon. Whatever limited literature is available, most of it is focused on the preliminary reconstruction of deformity which again may not be feasible in late presentation. CASE REPORT: We present a 17-year-old girl having mirror foot with dysplastic trapezoid shaped tibia. She had mild equinovarus deformity of the right foot with three pre-axial extra digits that represent a mirror foot. There was also a gr

Pathomechanics, gait deviations, and treatment of the rheumatoid foot: a clinical report.

This article describes the five major foot deformities or problems often seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: hallux valgus, pronation of the foot, depression of the metatarsal heads, hammer or claw toes, and tendocalcaneal bursitis or subplantar spur formation. These deformities contribute to the development of common rheumatoid gait deviations such as decreased velocity, cadence, and stride length; poor heel-toe pattern; and abnormal patterns of weight bearing. Nonsurgical treatment for these problems includes joint protection methods, assistive gait devices, orthotic intervention, an…

Club-foot through the centuries.

This is a study of the history of club-foot from ancient times up to the present. It embraces not only the clinical aspects of the deformity but also its social implications, particularly of its early history when the attitude of society towards the lame and crippled in general and to foot deformities in particular is discussed. Relevant references from Greek mythology and also from the Old Testament are quoted. A close study is made of the old Chinese custom of foot-binding which produced club-foot like deformities which became a symbol of social standing. Inevitably, like most other medical …

Bridging the Gap: The Influence of Foot and Ankle Pathomechanics in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Altered spinopelvic mechanics can have dramatic influences on the success of hip arthroplasty as seen with concomitant hip and spine disease. Interestingly, limited focus has been directed toward a similar codependent relationship between concurrent knee and foot deformities. By bridging this interdisciplinary gap, we attempt to explore the current understanding and clinical implications of concomitant knee and foot pathology while reviewing management options for addressing this unique yet ubiquitous patient population. Multiple authors have demonstrated an inverse relationship between progre…

Association between preoperative pain intensity of MTP joint callosities of the lesser toes and fore-mid-hindfoot deformities in rheumatoid arthritis cases.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether preoperative pain intensity in callosities of the lesser toe metatarsopharangeal (MTP) joint was associated with the grade of fore-mid-hindfoot deformities, because rheumatoid arthritis (RA) foot deformity includes the whole part of foot, and curiously differences between cases in the pain intensity of MTP joint callosities are often observed. METHODS: We evaluated 24 feet that had undergone forefoot surgery [August, 2014 - December, 2015] for painful lesser toe MTP joint deformity (callosities) in RA cases. A preoperative self-administered foot evaluation que…

Effect of Foot Rehabilitation Exercises for Painful Flat Foot in a 20-Year-Old Female: A Case Study Analysis.

Pes planus, commonly referred to as flatfoot, is a congenital foot deformity characterized by the descent of the medial longitudinal arch, resulting in reduced spring action and increased stress on the foot during ambulation. This condition, opposite to pes cavus, typically lacks symptomatic presentation despite its structural abnormality. This case report discusses a 20-year-old female presenting to the musculoskeletal department of physiotherapy with impaired gait attributed to developmental flatfeet and an underdeveloped heel on one foot since birth. Apart from these foot deformities, no ot…

Superficial mucoceles in cancer patients: a retrospective series from a Stomatology unit.

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory and multiple-system disorder of connective tissue. It frequently affects joints and periarticular structures of feet that constitute a significant supporting element underlying normal gait and motion of the body centre of gravity. The aim of the study was to evaluate foot deformities on the basis of plantography examination in RA patients according to the severity of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed on 54 RA patients. The control group consisted of 34 volunteers free of any disorders. Plantography exa…

Correction of multiplanar hindfoot deformity with osteotomy, arthrodesis, and internal fixation.

Multiplanar deformity of the hindfoot is among the most daunting deformities of the foot and ankle to correct. Deformity correction must attempt to fix the overall orientation of the foot, and prior surgical procedures, arthritic conditions, neurologic abnormalities, musculotendinous insufficiency, and patient goals must be considered. The procedure must relieve pain, arthritis, or instability of the hindfoot and ankle, as well as pressure overload of the lateral foot, midfoot, and/or forefoot. The foot should achieve a plantigrade position that allows for easier shoe fitting and provide a sta

Deformity correction planning for hindfoot, ankle, and lower limb.

Many patients with foot and ankle deformities have concurrent deformities (osseous and soft tissue), with or without limb length discrepancies. Lower extremity deformities and limb length discrepancies typically result from trauma, congenital abnormality, avascular necrosis, previous surgery, nonunion, and malunion. Limb deformity correction requires extensive surgical experience because many considerations and factors apply to realignment. The considerations and factors regarding realignment are highlighted throughout this article.

Combined Surgical Technique of Hyperselective and Partial Motor Neurectomies for Spastic Equinus, Equinovarus, and Claw Toe Deformities.

BACKGROUND: Patients with spastic equinus, equinovarus, and claw toe deformities can experience marked pain and functional limitations in the ability to weight-bear comfortably, ambulate efficiently, or mobilize independently. Seen in 80% of patients with cerebral palsy and 18% of patients with stroke (1, 2), the spastic foot and ankle deformities, and its secondary sequelae of static joint contractures, osseous changes, and chronic pain, are unfortunately common. METHODS: Adult and pediatric patients undergoing combined hyperselective and selective partial motor neurectomies for varus or cla

[Posttraumatic arthritis in the hind foot].

Posttraumatic arthritis of the joint components of the hind foot is typically linked with hind foot deformity and involvement of the neighbouring joint. The principal goals of any hind foot reconstruction are to achieve a quasi-anatomical reconstruction of the geometry and a stable and plantigrade foot position as a prerequisite for acceptable gait function, and an overall satisfactory result for the patient. Profound knowledge of the functions of the ankle-hind foot complex is the basis for the development of a valid therapeutic strategy. Any surgical reconstruction has to consider previous i
